square taper spindle question

new to me, thanks in advance.

here are the sugino ct-a5 amrs with a sugino maxy spindle.
the drive arm side ( chain ring side ) fits right onto the spinle looks like if tighten then would sit right on the spindle
however the non-drive arm sits "high" on the spindle, is that just a matter of tightening the hardware down.
inside the crank arm i can see where the spindle marks are,

thanks again for helping. pictures.

Re: square taper spindle question

yes, you have to tighten it to force it onto the spindle. The spindle is tapered for that exact reason. Keeps it snug for the most part smile

Re: square taper spindle question

That is a good question and is easy to answer, just look how many cranks have hammer marks on them and are sold now. I'd get the removal tool to have in your toolbox anyway. They always come in handy and do its job very well.

Re: square taper spindle question

if you are using a 14mm socket to put the nut on and you're torking it down, yes you need a removal tool

Re: square taper spindle question

Astroid, remember to put a small smear of grease on each flat portion of the spindle taper before installing the crank arms. It helps pull the arm on even and aids in removal.

I'm probably stating the obvious here but also grease the crank spindle bolt threads too.
