1987 General RL Osborn Hustler Pro
1987 General RL Osborn Hustler Pro
Don't know much about this bike, that's why I'm here!!
So I got this from my cousin, who hasnt touched it since the late 80's. It looks almost new aside from the surface rust on the chrome parts, but the decals are still mint! Gonna put some air in the tires tmw, see if I can remove the rust without damaging the chrome, and see how it rides!
Not sure about this bike, so I was looking to find out some details about it. Any info would be great, like is this one of the more common bikes, was it a good bike for what it was... are the parts on it stock or were they replaced at some point? What could I do to upgrade it? I was also kinda curious how much it was worth when it was new, and how much they sell for these days. I wanna paint the chainguard cuz its a weird color... would that add or devalue it? Where can I find some specs??
Take a look and let me know what you think!!

Oxcide acid(wood bleach) will remove rust and won't damage the parts,I just saw one sell on fb for 200,it had brake bosses in rear, and pergrine 48's though,Ibike is worth what another is willing to pay ![]()
Can you ride your bike?!

Re: 1987 General RL Osborn Hustler Pro
Cool ride.
Just my opinion, but I would lose the chaingaurd and reflectors.
Also, it's frowned upon to ask about price or worth here, but with a little time you can search around and find out pretty much anything you need to know.
Here is a link to the other General RL Osborn Hustler Pros on the site.
http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/general/?model=1181
And here are some that have been sold here.
http://bmxmuseum.com/forsale/search?q=o … amp;sold=1
There are some really good threads on this site about cleaning up chrome, and pretty much anything you can think of about restoration dos and don'ts.
Take your time fixing it up.

Re: 1987 General RL Osborn Hustler Pro
Wow thanks for the quick info guys! Nd Sry bout asking price stuff, I was just curious. Wood bleach huh, I got tons of that (woodworker by trade) I'm surprised I didn't know it did that. So remove the chainguard huh... I was thinkin about painting it black and airbrushing it.. I hate to remove a blank canvas like that, i'd prefer to make it something worth looking at.
I was thinking that I could continue the paint splattered effect and airbrush some words, but I don't really know if I should just plaster more of the name on their or try to come up with something relatively catchy...
Thanks again for the info, ill keep pics posted as I start working on it!!

Re: 1987 General RL Osborn Hustler Pro
You can also find the original General catalogue on this site.
Your bike is the R.L. Signature Hustler Pro:
http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=180367
This will give you the specs and show you what the bike came stock with.
It's a sweet ride and very worthy of restoration.
I also vote for the removal of the chain guard, but am curious to see what your plans for it are.
Either way cool bike!!

Here are the specs to your 87 General RL sugnature Hustler pro: http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=180367
The black version came with a Peregrine 48's wheelset, but other than that, it looks stock--not sure about the chainguard.
Beautiful survivor. I'm nearing the start of a custom build of this model as well but it was previously stripped. Yours is way too nice for that! Enjoy it man!

Re: 1987 General RL Osborn Hustler Pro
Ok, so I removed the rust and polished the chrome, sanders and painted the chainguard gloss black with valspar plastic enamel black gloss, and I'm debating redoing the rear pegs too cuz they are the only thing left on the bike that doesn't look like it just came from the factory.
Thanks for the info guys, after looking at that post with the original specs it does seem like everything aside from the wheels is stock, but I'm curious if the VT wheels were a factory installed option cuz in talks with my cousin he said he bought the bike just as it sits brand new in 87... So either the GT wheels were replaced in the bike shop or they came as an option, but I have noticed that they appear to be stock replacements if anything cuz they are six spoke like they should.
Pics coming of the finished "restoration" in a cpl hours guys. I can't believe how lucky I am seeing some other survivors, this thing really looks like it was just bought last week.

Re: 1987 General RL Osborn Hustler Pro
This model's wheel option for some of the paint scheme's were white Skyway OE 6 spoke mags, but they may have been swapped at the shop for the black mags upon request.

Re: 1987 General RL Osborn Hustler Pro
Well this sucks, I finished painting the chainguard and polishing off the chrome, Tightened up the brakes and ordered new tubes and wheels, got all the rust off, adjusted the seat and handlebars, and my cousin decided he wants to sell it. I never should have told him it had any value. But if you guys wanna see the finished product its up on ebay
For some reason when I try to upload the photo's on here they are too large and wont upload, so imma try resizing them and reuploading them in a lil bit.
