Schwinn Sting- Oldest Known- Looking for Serial Numbers and Answers!
Some of you may or may not have seen that I have a Schwinn Sting upon the forum that was previously for sale. It is a crack in what appears to be where the seatpost tube and top to meet, but have been unable to ascertain whether the crack is only in the chrome.
Regardless, the serial number is very early, D9T88. I read this is April 1979 and the 88th of that month.
I'm curious to know who might have an earlier bike, whom I have a photo so I know what stickers belong to the bike, have my bike is early enough, I may just have it restored.
Who wants to contribute their serial number and photo to see who is the oldest? Worst case, we start to build a registry!

That is really cool. I thought I had a really early one with a May serial number. Schwinn didn't even announce to there dealers in late May that Stings will be available. That's the earliest I've seen so far. Unfortunately, Stings are well know to start cracking in that area and I haven't come across one where its just the chrome. Cool early Sting though cause I didn't even know they had April stamped frames!

You need two "The Sting" downtubes, two chainstays, 1 Schwinn quality for the seat tube mast, one TriOval for the lower part of the seat tube mast. The bars had a SBC in the middle of the cross bar and the GEN1 forks should have 2 vertical Schwinn decals and 2 "Chrome Molybdenum" decals by the drop outs. NOS sets are expensive but I have a complete set with red chainstays. The rare blue chainstays go for $150 and up alone.

Earliest one I have is FT9035. Plenty of sting bikes on forum to reference for sticker placement. also check out stingbmx.com. Many of the chainstay decals are placed differently. some farther back, some more 'on top' closer to the cranks. Not sure either is wrong. Nick has hooked me up with decals and the repops were excellent. NOS obviously better than excellent...

I have a 1979 Sting, but it's not the earliest. May be one of the latest ones though. It's a November 1979 and the 223rd frame for the month.

Here you go Nick! Not quite where I want to be on it, but some parts have been corrected and some added. I even cleaned it a bit. I know, I know, get on this Sting and make it shine! ![]()

Another Sting collector has a 1980 chrome Sting frame that is the 2nd frame made that year. I'll let him post his pix of it if he wants to as I'm sure he'll read this post. It's a vert cool frame set!!

Re: Schwinn Sting- Oldest Known- Looking for Serial Numbers and Answers!
I wonder if some of the dropouts were made in advance of the frames, and stamped with the simple year and 'T' so they wouldn't get mixed up with ones they would use on a Competition. and maybe some, after being built, didn't get their SN's stamped.
