You win some you lose some

Last year i bought a nice looking set of wheels which i thought i got a good deal on only to realise later why, the front axle was bent yet i hadn't gotten a chance to install them in order to find this out so i just chalked it up to a loss and moved on. A couple months later i traded a set of cranks (like for like, chrome vs. color ones), they arrived and i checked the splines and threads and all was good so i threw them on a shelf.

Fast forward to today and i went to install them and discovered the spindle is perfect and Ti. big_smile
Like i said, you win some and you lose some.

Got a similar experience?

I bought a Pro Neck Bulldog stem off of ebay and the seller didn't have any good pics of the bottom. I took a chance and of course it was hammered.  The thing that brought it all together was the FREE D.C. MX clamp that he included in the sale with NO pics at all.  It was mint.

Don, those cranks happen to come out of one of my old S&Ms?  GT or unstamped Profiles?

Re: You win some you lose some

Got some wheels once and the front wheel shit itself within a day, ceasing up and chewing up the bearings. Bought replacement wheels and they turned out to have cracks in the bearing seat inside the hub.

Bought some used single pinch Redline crank arms off ebay few months ago. They rocked up with included: Techmatic BB, double dimple spindle and a full decal sheet.

I've had the occassion to buy off craigslist, and I'm usually pretty sure I'm getting a good deal, so I don't spend too much time looking things over.  Basically, it's just like the Forrest Gump thing...Craigslist "is like a box of chocolates".  Too many +/- surprises to list, but most of the time I find losses.  Still ahead, just not as far as I thought.

I bought a mid 90s diamondback for $15.00 the seller asked if I wanted "that bike frame" too.  It was a ball burnished looptail PK Ripper frame in great condition with Webco forks.

Re: You win some you lose some

I got you all beat, some guy calls me and asks if I wanted to buy his old Haro something or other, I said sure ill buy all kinds of BMX's as long as its old I told him. He said it might have a crack and should come to look at it before I spend the asking price of  $75.00. I get there it's a 85 master with a cracked seat mass tube. I buy it anyways and before I leave he tells me to hold on he has something in the shed that I can have, I brought him a coffee on the way to his house and he really appreciated it.... The guy throws in a 82 Haro frame and fork in the back of my pickup.....

Re: You win some you lose some

I traded a d-bag a set of Son Lite Turbo II hubs in black for $500 cash and a set of used SE Rad Pads.

I sent the hubs and now I have a - feedback and he has none....buyers remorse cuz he missed out on a set on ebay for $415 and he says the rear hub bearings are damaged.   The Turbo Lite bike must have been ridden by a 400lbs gorilla and not a 100lbs or less child like the top tube decal states....roll

Not my problem i guess.....I bought the whole bike for $350, sold the F&F for for $445.....big_smile

Re: You win some you lose some

working for a shop; some random stuff comes in here and there......
One day a kid walk in with a box of dusty old grips. says his recently passed grandpa had a bunch of stuff for bikes. wanted us to buy the box of grips. the boss wasnt interested... i dug in to see what was hiding and pulled out these 2 gems-
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x163/dedmann3/e075cb1e.jpg
told the kid id give him a few sheckles for the oakleys. he agreed and moved on.
a couple days later i was feeling like i missed the boat on a potential score. i had to convence myself it would have been junk. out of the blue i get a text telling me to go get a trueing stand that was on our c/l in a yardsale picture. yikes I NEED THAT!- i thought. made tacks with no hesitation....
well with in minutes i found the yardsale and seen a mass tanglement of bike stuff. i asked about the stand and the seller said it was just sold. hmm so being an optimist i asked if i may look through the tanglement. he say sure any thing in there i'll sell cheap. the dig begins....
i pull out a old nickel goose & numerous sets of tires (including a set of first gen snakebellies)- i ask how much? 10 bux
SOLD!
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x163/dedmann3/189dba4b.jpg
he says look in those boxes; there bike stuff in there....
turns out to be stash of first gen oakley grips.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x163/dedmann3/03690694.jpg
i cobble them ALL up and set to side. he then tells me his "step kids grandpa owned a shop in az in the 70's and closed doors in 77/78. he passed recently and we found all this stuff in the garage." neutral oh my. says he had race team blah blah blah. even found a box of shirts from shop.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x163/dedmann3/photo-167.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x163/dedmann3/96f03565.jpg
i said how much for all of it. he says X. i am bummed i open wallet and say how about 1/X. he says you can have all of what you have for 1/X. Agreed.
i say how about i bring you 1/X tomorrow for rest. well short story long- his step son was pissed. the next day wouldnt sell me anything and made me trade back goose for a r&r/puch something big_smile from good to gooder to meh -im good! smile i love score shakes cool

A friend of mine gave me his brothers old bike. It was a Torker 280 Air, pretty dented up but would make a good thrasher. I cleaned up the chrome forks and checked on here to see what kind they were. Bottema!!! big_smile
