1st Gen SST hubs, finally got a set.
I just received these hubs this morning and I still can't believe I have managed to land a set. These are by far the coolest hubs ever made and rare doesn't even begin to describe it. SST made only circa 80 sets of these hubs with a few being damaged during production decreasing the number, then take into account Woody Itson rode an SST rear Coaster hub and an SST front hub thereby spitting yet more pairs and then how ever many pairs that were lost or binned over the last 28 years and the remaining number of 1st Gen SST hub pairs stands at somewhere around 10 - 15.
I bought these off a true gent who was on Radbmx in the UK a number of years ago but who doesn't post there hardly at all these day. BOBBY GHP YOU ARE A LEGEND.
I found these through someone posting an EBay link on Radbmx regarding what they considered to be a high price on a NOS headset. I read the entire listing and noticed he said he would be listing these hubs in the near future. I contacted him straight away and after a little negotiation we struck a deal.
This actual hubset was laced to a set of Araya 7b rims and owned by Greg Hill who was sponsored by SST and then given to Tim March who rode them to win the Euros, they then found their way to Bobbyghp then finally to me where they will grace my VDC Gorilla.
I need to source new bearings which is no problem and the rear flanges and front centre will be anodised black to match the colour scheme I'm going with.
The amount of nuts, bolts, washers and the axles I got with these it's like Mecano.
my friend Steve who laces my wheels is really looking forward to lacing these babies up.
Sorry to go on but this is the coolest thing I've ever had delivered.
Enjoy the pics:

From what I can gather this is not the original colour of the hubs, when the previous owner got them from Tim March they were green but like a spayed green??? They have since been polished thus not original.

Re: 1st Gen SST hubs, finally got a set.
They are your hubs and you can do what you want to them, but I would not anno the centers. I could see if they were gold and you had a red / black bike and didn't want gold. (you get the idea) But these are silver / chrome and that goes with anything. consider not doing that. Just my opinion.

Re: 1st Gen SST hubs, finally got a set.
I would leave them alone and lace them as is-because since they were already polished I am not sure the anno job would look that good since the sharp edges have been polished. I have re-annoed some race boat hardware and wasn't pleased with the results. Do these come apart easily as I see you want to just anno the flanges? I wouldn't take the chance of breaking them.
Good luck and Congrats. ![]()

Thanks for the comments guys. I see what you're saying about leaving them them polished, you're right, that does go with anything and also about the sharp edges having been polished. Food for thought indeed.

Nice find- not an easy one for sure. I would agree that it might be best to keep it as is...they look sick when laced up. ![]()

Re: 1st Gen SST hubs, finally got a set.
AND they will look even sicker when anodized.
When you want to anodize something in part, and the whole item does not disassemble into pieces, there is a special paint that the anodizer will paint/apply to the portion that is not to be anodized. After the item has been anodized, the paint removes from the the aluminum part easily.
In my opinion, parts that are polished first, look the best after being anodized.

I don't even understand how that rear hub laces? Pretty wild.
So if you do ano them, and don't like it, you cold de - ano them, and repolish them. A long ways to get back to square one, but I don't think you are risking all.
I would tell you what I would do if they were mine, but being totally honest, if they were mine, I would sell them.....![]()

Like the SST coaster they get laced up by putting the spoke from the inside out(that's why the race version has mushroom like openings because of it's cone shape...where as the coaster has flat sides and not being hollow).

I bought my black Vector in a similar way. eBay seller said he was going to list it in another auction. It came with a super rare and super nice red PPP stem that I sold to numb nuts ^^^^ ![]()
I got it for pretty cheap and to this day one of my favorite riders. Btw those hubs are FTW!

Funny thing is there is only one way to lace them and it taught me how to lace a wheel....the rear that is.
