Thanksgiving score...Race Inc.
So I flew up to Sacramento (Elk Grove) for the weekend to spend Thanksgiving with family, go visit a cousin on Wednesday morning and get ready for a BBQ. My cousins husband asked me for help getting the ice chest and patio chairs out of the shed in the backyard. He opens it up and this thing is hanging from the back of the shed. I said WTF is that? He tells me it was his bike, bought it back in 80 or around then and never let it go. None of his kids ever wanted it so it just hangs there. I tell him it is probably worth some good coin and that I could help him sell it and he tells me to take it and fix it up for my son. I took pictures of it right after I took it down and here it is. He told me he basically went to the bike shop with his folks and picked out the parts himself so nothing has been changed. The wheels are Araya, shimano hubs with cassette freewheel, shimano rear brake caliper, mongoose saddle and frame pad, mongoose forks (I think) and unknown stem and bars (don't think they are ashtabula stem and mongoose box bars but could be wrong). The tires look to have been replaced at some time and are shot. In looking at the serial, looks like an 80 to me. Any info on this is greatly appreciated. I did break it down and got it ship ready so it will be in San Diego soon. I told him I would not sell it so please do not ask.
I just wanted to share that these scores are still out there. I guess my son is gonna ride this thing. ![]()

Re: Thanksgiving score...Race Inc.
Thanks guys, any idea on the forks and bars/stem? My wife wouldn't let me spend too much time with it on vacation so I guess the closer inspection will have to happen when it arrives. ![]()

Very cool! The fork is definatly Tange, Mongoose still makes a copy of it for kids bikes and Sunday makes one as well ![]()

Re: Thanksgiving score...Race Inc.
Looks like a 1980 or so Mongoose was harvested for parts for an RI frame. Mongoose and Shimano were pretty tight back then, and that would explain the Shimano parts, and the single stem and Mongoose bars and snowflake sprocket also look pretty standard Mongoose issue.
Whenever someone says, "I'm not book smart, but I'm street smart," all I hear is, "I'm not real smart, but I'm imaginary smart."

Re: Thanksgiving score...Race Inc.
I want that seat!!!! Yeah to me it looks more like someone swapped out all their goose parts to the race inc frame. It is hard to picture someone picking that stem and bars out. The seat I could see.
Either way sweet pickup!!!!! That is a cool story especially since it was a holiday and you were out of town!
I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.

I can't wait to get it here so I can look closely at everything once I tear it down and clean it up. I'm gonna get it rider ready for my son (who just turned 7). I have some time...

Re: Thanksgiving score...Race Inc.
Awesome score! But dont let your son have all the fun riding it. He wont remember Perry Kramer tearing up the tracks on one or Marty Garness or Mickey Lundy or Rick Scott. So you make sure to take it for a few laps also. You gonna restore it to like new or leave it as a survivor?

Re: Thanksgiving score...Race Inc.
That things Worth some good money. Truthfully you should just keep that one for yourself as your "pit" bike to ride with him on his bike. The geometry of that bike and a modern one are so different that it would almost be a negative on his riding style. If he learns on our old school stuff he'll learn "tricks" to ride that bike that he'll have to unlearn on a modern one. And Believe it or not, kids are so Finnicky like we were, they'd give him crap for riding it cause it was old. He'd probly react like we did with banana seat bikes and not care about thrashing it as much. It's worth wayyy to much for that, the paints Anodize. Heck I'd trade you an unreal mondern bike for it, a sweeet one for sure!! ![]()
I got lots of stuff, what you need? lol
