Its really sad, Earl would be rolling in his grave if he knew that they were parting the completes like that. The guy saved all those complete bikes for all these years just to have his greedy son and daughter in law part them out. sad

they have already done this same thing with a couple GTs, Dyno's and few other brands.

Re: another nos master

Greedy kids? WTF are they going to do with them? They understand...as do all of us that completes NEVER get as much as parting out. Earl didn't operate a museum or use them for show. He happened to have a crapload of bmx inventory that he was smart enough to hold onto for all those years when BMX tapered off. When he was alive, he priced it all pretty much +5 years (prices at the time we scoffed at....but would have easily paid 5 years later for!!)  So he is gone...the kids are getting every bit from what is left. Nothing wrong with that.

Agreed.I would want my Family to get as much as possible for anything I leave behind.I have a couple non BMX Collections that sold in pieces would be worth 10 times the lot price. We should be thanking them for splitting this stuff up as now you may buy that one grail piece you have been needing for years to complete your own project.I am just glad to see it not end up in a landfill like a lot of collections I have heard of in the past.

i can understand a non enthusiast parting out inventory for more cash (i don't like to see it buy i can understand why they do it)

what turns my stomach is guys on this site that consider themselves "collectors" doing it just to make a hundred extra dollars or so.

come on guys! there is not an endless supply of gear to molest! sad

Re: another nos master

Here we go with this old debate again. So someone scores  a Trick Star at a rummage sale for 50.00. They have no use for it and decide to sell. So anything over 50 is ripping people off, blah blah. put it on ebay and sell it...... whatever it brings it brings. Show me a member here that would sell it for 50. Or even 100 thats double your money should be "enough" right??

If I read right he started selling his own stuff on ebay before he passed. Wouldn't you think thats what his kids would do. They mention no interest in bmx. What else would they do with it? join here and give every member bro deals on everything lol

As far as parting completes. It happens here every day, nothing new. Super rare high end bikes parted. Every piece is someones elses last piece and they buy it and so on. I see super nice completes sit here for months. Then when the partout begins they are gone in a few days.Usually for more money that when it was complete.

I never buy anything with the intention to lose money lol

I concur.

I have owned many completes, some survivor, some pieced together and some refinished and MINT and put together with all top-end parts.  Generally, I break them up and sell them off piece by piece because no one wants to pay for a complete.  My restored 87 PFT sat for weeks at a wicked price and then when I finally broke it up I got a rash of poop from guys crying.  I told them all to stuff it and I cleared at least $250 MORE than the complete was priced at.

These are just things, some are worth more than others of course, but when I sell I'm in it to make as much as possible to buy more stuff.  If I know you, like you or feel like being magnanimous I'll certainly offer up a deal but ultimately I don't lose money in this hobby.

Re: another nos master

I had a complete 24K edition trickstar2....absolutely couldn't bring myself to part it. People kept beating me up on the price ($375) and I finally let it go to a guy that was badgering me for $275....(did I mention it was mint?) Anyway, this hack immediately parted it out and made triple what I sold to him for. For every 'purist' that insists on selling complete, there are a dozen 'buyers' who cant wait to buy/part/flip to gain the most $$ from thier 'investment'. Sickening...but it happens every damn day.

I can see parting bikes to a degree due to the hassle of boxing, then shipping a heavy parcel so UPS or USPS can beat the hell out of it before it arrives to the buyer. But I can't stand seeing an obvious matched frame and fork being hawked in seperate auctions, especially T/As, JMCs, and other hard to find matching sets. mad

Points are valid, though we're not talking about "bro deals" or limiting anyone's profit.

They could easily bring in a good chunk of change selling it complete.  Earl got that Master for probably $200-$300 max back in the day...   It could be sold complete, together for $3000 no problem.

I don't think there are too many complete NOS Haro Masters you guys have been parting out lately.

In the end, nothing we can do about it, but it doesn't make it any less of a shame.

Uuuumm - I don't know if you ever bought anything from Earl BITD, but if his daughter is making $50 more parting out a bike than selling it complete, he's looking down on her from his heavenly perch and whispering "Why didn't you make $100 more, darling?"

I loved Earl 'cause he had the goods, but holy s*** could this guy turn a profit.  Anything - and I mean anything - I ever bought from Earl I paid out the nose for.  And trust me, this guy could wheel and deal, because he'd never give me a price.  He'd ask me how much I thought it was worth, then tack on another 30 - 40%.  And there was no low-balling the man.  He knew what his stuff was worth to anybody who was interested in it...

Every conversation I ever had with him began exactly like this:

"Hi Earl, it's Kevin from New York.  How are you?"
"Yeah.  What d'ya need?"
"Well, I need an ____.  Do you have one...?"
"I might.  How much is it worth to you?"
"Well, let's say $X?"
"Really?  No, no.  Now that i think about it, I'm not sure if I have one..."
"Wait - maybe $XX?"
"I could $XXX.  If I have it.  Call me next Thursday..."

By the time he actually got around to confirming that he had _____, which was weeks after the initial call, I would have paid $XXXX+Y my knickers were in such a twist.

No, Earl liked his profit margin, and I think his daughter is carrying on right well with the family tradition.

Miss him.  I really do.

Sounds like Earl knew how to run a buisness!!!! Seems like he taught his daughter well!
We can complain all we want but if the tables were turned I think alot of us would do the same thing his daughter is doing. I have no problem saying that I have re sold bmx stuff for ALOT more than I paid for it in the last 12 years. I wish i had the money, that haro f/f is a beauty!!!

Re: another nos master

Add the prices together when all the parts sell. They wouldve never gotten that as a complete. PERIOD. Thats all they care about and frankly, I dont blame them.

Re: another nos master

I scored an all original '83 Torker about a year ago for $300, seller set the price based on what he bought it for new and I was happy to pay it. I didn't have the sole intention of flipping it but I found something else I wanted. It had complete padset and a super rare Torker stem, even had Torker cable clamps. I put it for sale here for $1000 shipped, even reposted it for Torker enthusiasts that may have missed it. I couldn't sell it complete. I ended up parting it out and made $2000. Even on all original completes, the sum of all parts are worth more than the complete and allows others to get that final piece they want/need. It was a shame but I have no regrets.
All that to say, when Earl's family can sell parts and get premium price, like Lamborghinikid, who can blame them? It's not personal, it's business to them. I doubt they have other jobs when they seem to have an endless supply of NOS BMX swag.

At the end of the day people when I go I will want my kids or their kids to get the most out of what I leave behind and I really wouldn't care less how many anonymous people it p1ssed off, the more they can make the better.
If it bothers you that much buy the frame and forks and all the parts and put it back together.
That said it is cool, but way over priced you gotta be mental to pay what its already at and it still got 8 days to go.

Re: another nos master

I always try to sell bikes as completes because I don't like to box things up. Also at times its hard for me to make it to the post office so if I part something it could take longer for me to ship everything.
I don't have a problem parting things and it's good for the people that do it for the extra $$$.

I just find it kind of sad that they parted the bike out, I don't care what any of it sells for.
Hopefully all those nos parts go to build someones nos Master big_smile

Look at it this way.
Instead of it making 1 person with DEEP pockets happy it made several people with maybe not so deep pockets happy.

There's no doubt that parting bikes brings in more.  I'm definitely not against them making money.  If I were in their shoes, not a collector of this stuff, and a huge stock of my Dad's old bike junk was paying the bills...  I'd do it no different (except I'd have a team of shill bidders on staff..  lol)

I think we can all agree, it would be awesome to have a crap load of money to keep these NOS bikes together.
