1988 Ozone Method:Air

1988 Ozone Method:Air
1988 Ozone Method:Air
Ozone Method Air 1988 with original Ozone forks (by Akisu), Ozone handlebars (however they are not currently in use), original paint and decals. Built by Timo "2Fresh" in Helsinki, Finland.
The Ozone was my "holy grail" for over 14 years!! I wanted something special for this build so there's a set of actual gold plated Peregrine Q-Bars and a matching seatpost to enhance the yellow elements in the graphics. The frame & fork set was bought in used but very well preserved condition in 2004 and it came with original (and rare) Ozone FS handlebars with ODI Mushrooms and Odyssey Pitbull rear brake. The project was first time completed in june 2004 but has since been updated little by little to achieve the kind of looks i had in my mind.
Of the Ozone Method Airs listed in the museum, mine used to be the one that was submitted earlier by unknown "guest" titled as "1988 Ozone Freestyler" see the link: http://www.bmxmuseum.com/bikes/ozone/14 Apparently, the bike was then aquired by AJK, parted out and sold as frame and fork set with bars included to my possession.
That very same bike is the one that is now in my possession and from the above link you can see how it used to look before i did a full re-build and slight clean up and restoration. I was fortunate to get the frame, fork & bars with 100% all-original factory stock decals. Despite the few nicks here and there they are very well preserved and worth keeping. You can always reproduce decals but you can only have one set of original decals.
Ozone as a standalone brand was introduced in 1988 and it produced total three models which all shared the same frame geometry. The only difference between the three was in tubing material, small details and colour.
Method One: Full 100% Chro-Moly construction, "the flagship" pro model. Had U-brake posts under the chainstays. It was available in chrome/black & chrome/white. In some listings they have mentioned chrome/orange and chrome/aqua which only refers to the earlier models by Air-Uni (introduced year before, in 1987) which also had three models under same geometry. Those were called "Air-UNI U2", "Air-UNI Ozone" and "Air-UNI U-Bi". As for the 1988 Ozones the Method One is only known to exist in black/chrome and white/chrome.
Method One had dual (parallel) cable stops at the bottom bracket and dual cable guides in front of them so that you could run dual lower cables directly from the Gyro into the u-brake arms. It also had a cable stop plate on the underside of the downtube, just like O3, and this was meant for the two cable adjusters (unlike the O3 that only uses single cable thru the same type of plate). The idea is that you can run two separate lower cables and have their middle part exposed for less cable friction so that only the top and bottom parts have housing. Simply ingenius!
Method Air: The "expert" model. Tri-Moly construction, (or more likely "Quad-Moly" if you will, when adding the dual toptubes to the overall tubes count) which consist of Chro-Moly headtube, downtube and toptubes. Chainstay tubes were Hi-Tensile Steel. Method Air was designed to work with centerpull type rear brakes that mount with single bolt into the frame's seatstays or chainstays (i.e. Dia Compe, Weinmann, Altenburger, Odyssey Pitbull etc etc). Note: "centerpull" is NOT same as "u-brake". Centerpulls are mounted with a bolt on to either chainstays os seatstays while u-brakes require special welded-on u-brake studs for mounting them. There is two cable guides on the underside of the down tube, both located near the bottom bracket. The Method Air came with atleast two different downtube decal designs with fading on the front end of the decal and the other is completely chrome foil without the fade.
Method O3: High Tensile steel frame, the "entry level" model (supposedly spelled as "Oh Three", not "zero-three"). Designed to work with centerpull type rear brakes just like Method Air. Appears to be the only Ozone that came fully painted (as black) but used the same chrome foil/black fade decals as Method Air & Method One except ofcourse the tiny stickers on the top tubes saying "Method:O3". Has the same two cable guides on the underside of down tube, near the bottom bracket and a welded-on plate at the middle part of down tube for cable adjuster or, more likely to anchor the lower cable firmly to its place.
According to Alan Brown (the creator of AIR-UNI and Ozone) the Ozone frames were produced in hundreds rather than thousands which partly explains their rarity these days. Obviously some broke, some just disappeared or more likely, ended up in the dumpster back in the day. What a shame...

Many thanks to everybody who gave their vote and left all those nice comments! I greatly appreciate it. Thank You.

RealFox, to my knowledge Ozone went out of business in during '89-90. There's a saying; "it's better to burn out with a blaze, than slowly fade away". That's just what they did.
AJK, my sincere Thank You for hooking me up with the holy grail bike of my dreams!! I can now say it was well worth waiting the 14 years to get this into my possession. I will take good care of it.
Thanks,
-Timo

Unfortunately Timo, I have no pics of me and my OZone. I have absolutely no idea what happened to them. I have pics of me with other bikes I owned but I can find none of me and the OZone. Not even one of the bike by itself and I took tons of pics of and with that bike.

Re: 1988 Ozone Method:Air
Update.
I recently upgraded some of the parts and took some new photos (you can view them at the museum)
What's new for this summer:
DK nonconcentric, single bolt seatpost clamp in black, approx from late 80's. I haven't seen many of these lately/ever at ebay. What you usually see are those silver ones with two bolts from early to mid 90s.
Gold/black KMC chain for better color balance. The all black one was too black.
KKT beartrap type cast alloy body pedals. Since the gold VP DXs are now on the Carraro. First thought of Grafight-Xs but those seem to be on just about every other bike so i wanted something different.
Scheduled final upgrade (hopefully soon): to add them silver print Peregrine Super Pro decals on to the black Super Pro HP rims. Will have to remove a few spokes for that update so that's why ive been lazy about it..
Thanks for your time.

Re: 1988 Ozone Method:Air
Hey Louis & Scott, thanks so much for the cheer up words guys.
Yeah i do take some pedals on the Ozone, but that's just easy sunday cruising etc. no actual riding as in practising tricks or nothing like that, no no. The bike is too valuable for that.
The Skyway FS Tuff Pads seem to treat the black HP rims nicely, no paint chips or major wear. Ok, slight surface wear so that ou can see they've been used but it takes a lot more than occasional cruise to wear the paint out on those rims. I'm still in the process of adding the original silver Peregrine/HP48s decals that came with the rims. Only THEN the bike will be completely finished.
Thanks again.

Re: 1988 Ozone Method:Air
Ok, speaking of rim decals, got around to assemble them, finally. So now it's safe to say this bike's fully completed down to the smallest yet important detail:

Re: 1988 Ozone Method:Air
Thanks man.
Yes, de-laced but i only partially. I removed just the four spokes for each decal so ultimately it was very easy yet somewhat time consuming to get it done nicely. The wheels remained true, all i had to do was some fine-tuning in the end.
For anyone interested here some pictures of the process:
Cutting up the decals to correct length, you only have so much room between the spoke holes.
Partially de-laced wheel. That's only four spokes per wheel so it's really nothing major complex in case you're adding them onto a pre-built wheelset like i did and it really won't mess up the wheel at all. Remember to clean the surface of the rim for maximum adhesion before applying the decals!
Pre-setting the decal using a light on the background to see the holes for correct position.
Getting ready to the mark the punch holes by taping each decal on to the rim.
Marking the spots.
Punch-hole markings - done!
This is the "tool" you'll need a hole puncher used for archiving papers into maps. You need to remove the bottom lid to see where you're punching.
Here we go. Steady hands and some patience is the key. Relax.
The decals should then look like this.
Final check before applying.
Done! I could've used the water & soap method but i decided to apply them dry.
Re-laced and ready to roll!
...and here's couple new photos of the once again "completed" bike. ..Bear with me on this please, for me this is huge as this process has been going on for the past two, three years.

Thanks for your time.

Re: 1988 Ozone Method:Air
Hey, thanks so much. Like i said, only now i feel the bike's completed - Funny how small detail like that can make such difference in the overall appearane ..or maybe it's just me and my perfectionist goals, lol! ..bothered by the fact that the rims almost SCREAMED for decals, haha ![]()
The decals are genuine 100% old stock, not duplicates. You could see that from the yellowness of the protective paper on the back and the quality of the print (these are not laser/digital repros) I was fotunate to get these as a freebie with another set of black Peregrine HP48 rims i purchased from flatlandfuel.com earlier this year. Fortunate also because it was their last set.
The first set of HP rims (on the bike right now) were purchased long while ago in barely used condition form AJK and they were in excellent shape. Anyway, too bad He (or the previous owner/s) had peeled off the original decals. Someone might even remember those rims on his site as they were for sale for quite some time, maybe nobody wanted them due to lack of the missing decals? I did ask however whether He (AJK) was going to make repros of the rim decals sometime soon, cause i wanted them bad but i never got any reply from him regarding that matter.
Anyway, if anyone ever happens to need some hi-res scans and measires of these decals, just let me know.
Thanks again
