Steve Skibel's Powerlite

Steve Skibel's Powerlite. This bike was from a friend of mine. He got it form Steve Skibel Sr. It was in his bike shop since the 70's and then back into his garage when he sold the bike shop and ventured into other things. He told me that it's one of the first pit bikes Steve Rink made and that it was built for Steve Skibel Jr. I was amazed and shocked when he finally showed it to me. I have only heard about this bike in conversation at the bike shop but it never went further than that. I have heard alot of stories and lies in BMX but this is a true story the guy I got this bike from had 5 race teams and 3 bike shops he has accomplished alot. And the reason why I believe him is because he gave me this bike as a gift. It had nasty 90's handlebars and cranks on it. I had to put era correct bars and cranks and that is all I had to do to it.

Re: Steve Skibel's Powerlite

Hate to burst you bubble but this is DEF NOT one of the first frames made by STEVE RINK.. The first frames made by peddlepower  were the two bar frames that eventually became the TORKER frame...they were called the RINK RAIDER...Dennis Dain still has one...the stickers on there are prob around 1980 as is the frame design...that same style was made under the peddlepower name and then the powerlite name change...I have pics of that frame with PEDDLEPOWER stickers on it .. brand new still...Steve Skibel sr and jr were great friends of ours. Stevie jr was one of my best friends growing up around bmx from age 6 or so... Stevie was racing for DG at 7 yrs old and NEVER raced for powerlite. We raced together as a sidehack combo at Corona and WSA...When Powerlite got to big to run peddlepower and POWERLITE... he sold the bike shop to SKIBEL and a partner.. probably around 79 or 80? So there is NO way this was one of the first frames...if you want to shoot me your email i can send you some pics etc. He only had the shop for a couple years then it solda few times more before closing with ROB LYNCH as owner of peddlepower. My very first car was a 1970 camaro.. had it a year then sold it to Skibel.. So that camaro was stevies first car... after it was my first car lol.. i traded that car to SKIBEL SR for a 67 el camino..i was 15 so that was 1980? Stevie was 6 months younger than I...Sorry to wreck the story on that frame a little bit .... feel free to email me anytime if you have any ?s  markrink2001@yahoo.com  or on FB too...My dad was steve if you didnt know already lol... have a great day!

Cool,  tell that to Darryll Hand the guy I got it from.  He said it was one of the first pit bikes made not first frames ever made. This has an early frame design with a square brake bridge. I dig the history and any and all info about this. I see no reason for Darryll to lie. Ask Steve Jr. If he remembers this pit bike bike. It was given to the Hand family in the 70's is what I was told.

Re: Steve Skibel's Powerlite

GOTCHA... yea its rare for sure... only made a small amount of those for sure... Will ask my dad about the details in the next few days..When you say he built a pit bike..HE MADE THAT FRAME and FORK only.... im sure he made LESS than 50 of those....I think what happened was stevie was done with BMX pretty early .. he got into motorcycle racing in early teens and used pit bike for putting around the pits...whats dimensions on that? Not sure who Mr hand is? but i do know alot about what went on with powerlite ... I worked with my dad at powerlite from 13yrs old till about 20...welded, cut chromoly, stickered the stuff. had my own NUMBER PLATE LINE... Mark4... I hear stories about all kinds of stuff in early BMX that isnt true and the truths seem to get muddled up over the years...COOL BIKE...are those 16inch wheels?  Mark

Re: Steve Skibel's Powerlite

I really dig that you built these frames. It must have been cool growing up as kid in the heyday of BMX. I love history and try to learn as much as possible. I would never in a million years doubt you at all when it comes to Peddlepower/Powerlite history. If possible maybe we can figure out where and who this bike used to belong to. Thank you for your history lesson. I talked to Dennis and he is going to try and get a hold of Steve Jr. and see if he remembers.

Re: Steve Skibel's Powerlite

Dennis Dain hit me up to try and find STEVIE lol...i had his number about 5 yrs back and WILL try to contact him or his dad, as well as ask my dad if he remembers... one troubling part is that paint job was 100% NOT done by my dad... it was either repainted or done that way by stevies dad.. which is possible because we all knew the same painters etc back then...could have taken it himself to get it a certain color? but WE never made a frame that color...IF your friend MR HAND said it was giving to him by steve sr then im sure its true...but Dont listen to 3rd hand stories etc.. "this was the first " or my friend knew a guy stories..smile . so much made up stuff out there its not funny...Probably the Oldest known  peddlepower around today is Dennis dains RINK RAIDER.... the first peddlepower were the two bar top...they were the original TORKER.. my dad designed what became TORKER..STEVE JOHNSON went in the HOF this yr and in his speech he thanked my dad for designing it ....My parents also ran the races at CORONA and WESTERN SPORTS ARAMA.. in fact the SKIBEL family helped us run the races at corona...Have a great day everyone...Mark Rink
