My Next Build - 1984 GT Pro
Hi All,
Thought I'd just start a thread for my next build.....an 84 GT Pro.
I bought this of Thrusterdreamer months ago and it is finally time to start building.
This pic below is what it was like when I bought it.....
It is in a pretty bad way. The chrome is ok under the decals but it looks like someone may have rubbed it down with sandpaper to try and get the rust of in other places.......and stuffed it. The forks are pitted and the chrome is shot too. But there are no cracks or dents so it's a good solid base.
I think it is also a little unusual too as it is stamped 84 but it still has the non sloped and unstamped top tube end..... I might be wrong tho and it could very "usual".
This rig is currently at the paint shop get a fresh coat of 2 pack paint.
All the components are either at home waiting when I get home in a week or at the chromers getting a bit of love.
Hopefully everything will be ready when I get home and I can't start dressing it up, but this ugly duckling is gonna have a bigger makeover than the Beauty and the Geek Crew.....
So anyway, Hopefully I'll be able to update you all with some progress pics and a complete build in a week or so.
Cheers
KD

Re: My Next Build - 1984 GT Pro
What color did ya' go with?
Regarding the S/N thing, they made the non-bologna cut until around April of '84. They started up with the bologna cut around February of '84. So there was an overlap obviously. My bologna cut is a 384 S/N.
Red alert! .....I am down to one pair of red cages. Speak now or forever hold your peace.

Thanks for the info.....I think mine is a 184
This is going to be a fresh white......but that's about as standard as it will be. I have the decals and pads all ready to roll when I get my frame back ![]()

As far as decals go...you're lucky it's not a bologna cut. I bought the last large '4130 chromoly' decals on the planet.

They are, but just to explain....see on your bike that the down tube decal is very large (longer than the fork decals), but in that for sale ad, they all look the same length (as the fork decals). This is because they offered two downtube sizes (don't ask me why). When I bought my set it had both the small one and the large one. It's the large one that is impossible to find. I'm surprised that set hasn't sold though...also hard to find any of these decals. I don't even think anyone ever reproed' em because I think they were one year (for only part of the year) or so.

Re: My Next Build - 1984 GT Pro
Howdy guys,
Back from work and have picked up some parts. Thanks for the comments and info.
Well, the chrome has all been done and looks pretty nice.......unfortunately the painter has been flat out and hasn't quite finished (started
) my frame and forks.
Here's a few pics to keep you interested until the frame is done....
Hubs, they were a bit pitted and looked a bit dull so they copped a coat.
And to stick with the theme I have in mind I had some decals made up....
And here's how they look all dressed up... don't worry about the nuts, I have some new track nuts ready to go
I also had a go at restoring a brute stem. I bought it from a member here and it looked pretty good. There was some red behind the REDLINE text and it just needed a final polish to get it looking nice.
I ended up stripping it right back and I reckon it took 7 or 8 goes to get the REDLINE looking good. I think I should have been more patient first up and let the paint cure.....anyway eventually I got it how I wanted it....
The chromer also had his work cut out for him with a stamped GT disc......he pretty well got it right. One wing stamp is a little faint but it has come up pretty good.
And this is what I have so far...... I'm not sure what pedals to go for yet, but once it all starts to get pieced together I'll have a better idea......
I also have Black B1B's, and a NOS black suntour clamp on the way.
My decals are also here ready and waiting but I'm gonna keep a lid on them for now......
Hopefully I'll have some more parts and pics in the next few days.
Cheers

Re: My Next Build - 1984 GT Pro
Ok, so I have some good news and some not so good news......
The good news is the frame is back and the paint is killer, the other good news is that the decals were a walk in the park to put on (compared to the zeronine decals
) and it all looks pretty good so far.
The not so good news is that I leave for two weeks work tomorrow and can't get it built tonight.....and the other not so good news is my camera just died in the ass and I can't get any pics..... ![]()
I'll get the camera charged and see what I can come up with....
