1974 Redline Squareback
1974 Redline Squareback
Another one found. I'm STOKED!
Well, here's another one to add to my projects pile. This is as I found it and I'll of course be straightening it out (cranks, forks, bars etc.) later. Came with the age appropriate, first gen unmarked Skyway tuff wheels like they made in the beginning. Also came with the first gen Redline double clamp neck.

Haha, thanks man. I grew up on the streets of Hollywood in the early '80's and hung out with all/any of those guys in the punk scene. People used to refer to me as "the other Robo".

Re: 1974 Redline Squareback
Wow....VERY cool!
The crank looks like a Schwinn diamond crank which would be totally correct for that bike. It was the first upgrade crank, usually robbed from Varsity 10-speeds. It will have a date code.
Also the stem is early but it looks like the third generation, the first gen having the quill in the center of the base and the 2nd gen having the squared off blocks. Still very cool and rare.
Congratulations...that is a very cool and rare find.

Re: 1974 Redline Squareback
All I care about is the frame. Cranks and neck could be from WalMart but I'm going to straighten this beeatch out... ..XTR? Chis King? Don't be surprised.

Re: 1974 Redline Squareback
So basically what you are saying is that you know absolutely nothing about what you are doing and you're going to ruin a very nice piece of history?
Tragic....

Re: 1974 Redline Squareback
699 posts... ..wow.
I'm humbled by the sheer volume of opinions you have about other people and their stuff.
Send me your address and I'll mail you the 1990's Chinese tin, Kmart cage pedals and maybe the late 80's Chinese made forks. You can use them on your '74 squareback to restore it's former upgraded state but not everyone considers a hodge podge of random 70's 80's and 90's parts "correct" for this bike.
If I wanted to build an early upgrade I might keep the neck.

Re: 1974 Redline Squareback
I've built a lot of road bikes and mtb's for pro racers and I've always wanted to build a crazy union of old and new and go over the top with all state of the art parts on a supreme classic BMX frameset (I already have a correct fork). Just trying to think of something different than boring old stock '74 or early upgrade. Everybody does that. I decided against XTR because of the cantilever style rear brake, so now I'm thinking full Campy drive train and brake with Chris King hubs and headset. I'm a huge fan of Chris King stuff. ....Nothing that can't be undone. I can bring it back to stock '74 anytime. I decided to keep the Cooks stem just in case I need it down the road for another build. I got a line on some NOS clamps for it for $175.
