70's 26" "Diamond in the Ruff Score" :)
Just got her home and had to take a few pics of tonight score to share. Looks to be a 78/79 26" Champion Squareback. Serial #74 on the BB. I'm not sure how many of these were made or if the serial # can correctly date the frame as a 78 or 79. If you have any info or educated guesses on the mfg date, please chime in ![]()
The bike is outfitted w/ a sweet Atom rear drum hub on some fat chrome hoop, Tange TX 1200 forks, 1st gen Tuf Neck and unknown cruiser bars. The rest of the stuff is 80's-90's MTB stuff. Looks like it was originally black under the white rattle can paint.
So, I need help w/ the ID on the bars. The bars are 30" wide w/ a 6" rise. 4" center to center, on the cross bar. The knurling spacing is super wide. Not sure what type of stem/clamp these were designed for. Any help on the identification of the bars will be much appreciated.
My 1st 70's cruiser. Can't wait to restore and build this beauty. She's a keeper for sure ![]()

Looking for any Panda stuff, Champion Squareback frame set decals, undrilled Redline Squareback fork in nickel, any nickel plated bars from the 70's, OS uncut Star Bars, red or blue 1st gen Mushroom grips, Auburn pads, Schwinn Pro Modified 1 frame decals, 20" 7b's or Ambrosio hoops & 26" 2.125" Ukai hoops
** WANTED: Early 90's Floval Flyer decals & 80's Profile down tube decals **

You do very well with your scores! Those bars look like motorcycle/mx bars.
With your luck, you'll strip the paint and find a nickle frame you can polish up! ![]()

Nice find !!!
+1 on the motocross bars, the wide knurling is for the motorcycle clamping on the tripple clamp fork.

Yes on the bars. Almost like a kos shape to them too. Rad score.
that thing looks like it has a 26 inch rear and a 24 inch front wheel. ![]()
I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy.

Bike came from a buddy that works at the largest scrap yard in Nor Cal.
I kind of figured they were MX bars w/ the spacing and deep knurling. No matter, their staying w/ the build. Cool enough for me.
Dont think they plated this in nickel Vin but I'll take some chrome under the paint ![]()
Thanks for the kind words guys. Im super stoked!

Yep, that's some 24" wheel from the 90's up front. LOL. Gonna have to find a new front wheel for sure. Rear wheel and hub are staying put. Just have to convert it to a single speed cog. Hope I can find a cog for that hub.

The Atom Hub takes a standard threaded freewheel. I have a 22t Suntour on mine. All you have to do is resize the spacing and you are good to go. Here is a pic of mine on my Gurney Monoshock.

He didn't say and i dont ask but I'm pretty sure it was headed for the scrap pile. Their pretty anal about taking anything out of the scrap piles so he keeps things under the cuff ![]()
Unbeliveable the stuff that goes through that yard. So many classic cars. They even have one of the full size Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaurs from the first Jarassic Park movie. Still has all the robotics and all inside. The owner held on to that piece ![]()

That Gary LittleJohn was Suicyco's bike. It was awesome.
I would date your Champion as a 78, your does not have a drilled brake bridge making it any earlier year model. The two digit serial number is interesting. Both of the squareback frames I have had have 6 number serial numbers Like 0109XX
Congrats on an absolutely awesome score. IMHO the squareback 26" is one of the most stylish cruisers ever made.

Thanks for the info. The serial # is actually five numbers on mine 1007x. I just knew they didn't make 10,000 of these frames in the late 70's so I assume it's #7x. All the other ones I saw online had the six digit serial # all starting w/ zero.
