1980s Team Murray restoration advice and questions?
Hey all,
New to the forum and looking for some help on a restoration of my childhood "BMX" - literally a Team Murray. I've done some research and I understand that these bikes are not valuable, but that's not a big deal to me. I'm simply trying to get my old ride looking pretty again as a display piece for my home. I have a series of photos in a Picasa album of the bike. I know that I need blue skinwall tires in 20 x 1.75 to replace the replacements that were put on by my father in the 90s.
What I don't know are the following -
- How can you remove rust/clean the chrome while preserving the original decals?
- Is it possible to repair seat vinyl or is replacement the only option?
- I do my own repair work on my classic car, but is there a BMX restoration service or company anyone here might recommend?
- What is the name for the type of grips on this bike? (photos attached)
- What style stem cover do I need to be looking for to replace the one that is missing?
- Given the amount of rust pitting on the chrome, would an OA or vinegar bath be an effective treatment for this bike?
Thanks for your help with this. Some pictures below and a link to the main gallery. https://picasaweb.google.com/1090479065 … /MurrayBMX

That murray will clean up fine! You can soak the frame in an Oxilid Acid (OA) bath and it wont hurt the decals. The grips can be soaked in water and detergent and scrubbed clean with a soft brush. You just need a single clamp stem pad. There are many on ebay in blue. I would keep that seat as is, clean it up and be on the look out for another in the meantime
Here an R&R is cleaned up

Here's a great link for OA bath too.

Thanks for the help! One more question - the brass snaps on my safety pads have rusted and look pretty bad. Is it accepted to replace these on the covers with new ones of the same size and color or is that frowned upon?
