Re: 1990 Clayborn

yeah that 990 does look to be post production add-on with the discoloration and lack of brake routing.
nice find reguardless though.

It's nice to be important but its more important to be nice.

I ride a '00 Crx. I love it. Rebuilt it with new parts. Good to see others enjoying such a rare name in BMX.

Re: 1990 Clayborn

Yeah, those posts are added on, but the good news is that up till that time, Dia Compe, knowing that not many bikes were yet manufactured to accept this setup (Redline and Haro were about it...), shipped a set of posts in the box with every set of 990s so you could have them welded on yourself.  I knew of several bike shops that offered this service.

Anyways, there was a guy named Scott and soemone else who began making frames and forks (Clayborn).  I and some friends of mine bought some of the framesets from the first batch so yes this is the 12th frame. Matt

So, mine is stamped "CLAYBORN 10", I guess that makes it the 10th frame made?

Re: 1990 Clayborn

I owned a  93 Backbone (21" TT)  in 94. I was a dirt jumper and that frame and fork was a beast It could not be broke. A very solid ride. The Express was a 20"TT version of the Backbone

Not too suprising since the company is/was based out of Ft. Walton. I remember going over to the Madden brothers house to look at a set of Xtra-Skinz (that is where they sold a lot of their stuff from) and having them tell me they were going to start building bikes. The other brother owns East Winds Board shop, Across from the Suburu/VW Store. My mom used to cut there moms hair.

My Clayborn frame is stamped 001387.

Re: 1990 Clayborn

I have a 92 Clayborne Backbone that I bought brand new from Dan's Comp.  I will post some pics but this frame is identical to the one I still own.  These bikes rock and you don't see much of them.  Nice Find!!!

Re: 1990 Clayborn

Ok I can't believe my eyes here. This frame was sold to one of best friends Matt in Pensacola Fl. in late 1991 or early 1992.  I took a pair of 990 mounts off a broken Haro Master and had them welded onto this frame for I think around 30 bucks. I purchased frame  # 8 from Scott and rode with Bill and boys at Pensacola clay pits hence the name Clayborn. The Backbone model was named after the largest set of doubles at the clay pits at that time.  I sold my frame to another local rider Lenny back in 1995 which I believe was the first Clayborn to have 990 mounts. The frames where very stout and some of best forks built at that time.

Re: 1990 Clayborn

I created Clayborn back in 1991 and sold it in 1996.  That is one of the original frames from the first batch made (and best).  50 were made initially.  The number doesn't reflect that it's the 12th one, just one of the first 50, as the dropouts were stamped before being welded to the frame.  I have one out of that batch that I have kept.  I think it is number 21.  I picked that one after culling through all of them looking for the best of the batch.  Otherwise I would have kept number 1.  Looks like you need some new frame stickers.  I still have the originals.  It sure would look better with a new  set.  Let me know, I'd be happy to send you one.

It's Great to hear it from the creators mouth..  Thank you very much.
