WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

Ill start off...

My avatar is a photo of me back in 7th grade across the street from my parents house where my friends and little brother made lots of jumps in the State Park.

I remember when I was real young, 2 and a half or so when my dad took the training wheels off my first mini. I would jump off curbs, fly down hills, make ramps with bricks and plywood, then it progressed. Bigger ramps, skate ramps, dirt jumps.

Sycamore BMX in Simi Valley California has been the track I have grown up on and still race at to this very day. Besides the racing, my friends and I would always go out, ride the trails, tracks, parking garages, parks, cities etc.......

LETS HEAR YOUR INTRODUCTION TO BMX STORIES. big_smile

STAY TUNED AND SUBSCRIBE TO THIS THREAD. I HAVE A FEELING WE ARE GOING TO GET SOME GREAT STORIES AND PICTURES OUT OF THIS. big_smile

I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy. smile

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

Cool thread.

In '83, my parents got me a Mongoose, even though they really couldn't afford it. Since my parents couldn't afford much, my brother & I knew we couldn't do any racing at a track. So we built our own. My bro, buddies, & I made our own track in some empty field near the high school. We had regular races w/ qualifiers, semi-finals, & finals. We were pretty organized considering we were only in jr high.

I never got to do any "real" racing at an official track. I raced at our homemade track, jumped everything & anything while riding around town, and built ramps all of the time w/ my brother.

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

Saw Evel Knievel in Philly in the early seventies-parents would let me have a motorcycle at my age then (I was 6) so bikes it was. My first time ever to a real track was in '78 at Vineland, a couple of years later, Howell opened and our riding crew were up there a lot, but we were more into jumping than racing. Then freestyle started and racing wasn't even a thought. At the time, I never would have thought that over thirty years later, I'd still be riding. Through the years while life ran it's course (working, racing cars, rock & roll, etc.) I always had a bike. Some periods it didn't get touched, but it was always there (still have the bike-'86 Haro Sport) When the X-Games started up, I started to pay attention to BMX again, got a new bike and got back into flatland. Now, when most people my age are worrying about the quality of their lawn of their golf game, I'm looking for an indoor spot to ride this winter. BMX is awesome!

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

Mine was around 1980 or so. A friend's brother down the street was into racing and I thought it was the coolest. He then got a Jox/Jag spnsorship and that sealed the deal for me. I wanted to race damnit!

I saved some cash and the next summer in 1981, I bought a nice, lightly used Kuwahara KZ-1 with blue anno parts. I loved it but didn't have the cash to race yet.

My parents didn't support off the wall sports (just hockey hmm) so I had to use allowance ect to buy a race licence and pay my own weekly race fees which didn't happen till 82'. I raced and wanted something a bit better so I saved even more allowance, collected bottles ect and sold the KZ-1 and bought a Hutch Pro Racer. I only raced locally and didn't go to Provincials or Nationals since my paerents didn't want to take me to any races out of town, let alone local ones.

Since I pretty much raced on my own, no parents to support me, there are no pictures of my bikes or me racing or anything. sad Just awesome memories.

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

It started for me when I spent the night over at a friend's house in 4th grade. We went to the garage to grab some bikes to go for a bike ride and he was showing off his week old Dyno Sonic. I HAD to get a BMX bike of some sort. We checked out a few of the local shops and eventually I found my bike; my parents ended up buying me (with the stipulation I pay them back) a chrome GT Performer. I worked a paper route just long enough to pay them back for the bike and buy some pegs for it.

I rode the heck out of it for a while and met a guy down the street that was several years older than me. He had a Mongoose of some kind and raced occasionally. I ended up convincing my family that I wanted to start racing as well and my parents and grandparents all chipped in to buy me a Haro Group 1 Si and an NBL membership for my birthday the following year. I've been hooked ever since.

I no longer race, but I do hit Ray's MTB twice a week in the fall/winter and try to get as much riding in as I can during the warm weather months.

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

It all started when my uncle took my training wheels off my bike in 1967, I was 4 years old. Then growing up the kids in the neighborhood and myself  built bikes and jumped everything we could.
I didn't start racing until 1984 in Tucson, I did ok and got on the Mission Park BMX team, we would race friday night in Chandler, sat night in Tucson, sunday in Seirra Vista and sunday night in Chandler. It was a blast!!!!

Then in 1986 I got stationed in Peterborough England and the racing was awesome, very nice tracks and talented riders. They have the whole come to the races, bring the family and camp, BBQ, and make a weekend of it attitude. One day I was out for a ride around Peterborough and I saw some riders and skaters and went over to hang out. We started rideing street and flatland every day and they became some lifelong friends.  I remember we built a Halfpipe in my garden at my rented house. The old lady next door in the row houses came shaking a broom at us and told us to stay off the top cause she thought we were peeping at her. LOL!

Freestyle was my love from then on and I havent raced since. After returning from England I have met and rode with alot of great riders from michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio, I now reside in Indiana and have always had a bike or two and get them out on occasion just to see if I can still ride.  I have built a few flatland bikes over the last couple months,  and am ready to ride again. smile

Late 70s and they weren't bmx bikes but we jumped them.
Around 1979 was when I saw a REDLINE and I was in love. Then next it was Diamond Backs...
Eventually my first real BMX bike was a 1980 Raleigh Supercross... then a few years later I got a 1983 GT Pro.... That was my main ride for a long time and then i got heavy into skateboarding and girls and beer and playing music... and then more girls and beer.
I was too busy on my yacht for pics of me on bikes.... but i did ride them.
playing stuntman in the 70s comes to mind... deliberately crashing etc.

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

My aunt began dating this guy that was racing 17 expert out of Lebanon,Oregon. He also happened to work at the LBS in my town. I had loved bikes, but never really had a good BMX bike at that point. The year was 1985 and it was the end of summer. He came over to my parents house since my aunt was visiting and he brought his bike........a 1984 Diamond Back Harry Leary turbo in smoke black. I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life! I made either the biggest mistake or the best move of my life when I asked to ride it. It was the fastest, smoothest bike I had ever ridden. I was hooked for life after that. My parents bought me an 84 Viper for my birthday and I started racing indoor that winter. I can recall that afternoon like it happened yesterday.......Now if I could only find one of those Harry Leary's.....

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

My first two-wheeler was a pieced together machine my dad built.
Schwinn Speedster frame
Forged steel fork
Red glitter banana seat
20x1 3/8 rear slick

I learned to ride by pushing off the side of my day's dead '57 Ford, putting grip scuffs down the side. One day, I lost balance, reached out, and there was a chain link fence, without the wire turned down. Poked a hole in my hand, and cut a vein.

Later on, my dad customized the bike
Painted it silver
Sachs Torpedo 2-speed auto coaster brake
Custom chain guard "COBRA BMX" that he lettered for me.

All that's left is the chain guard, and possibly the rear wheel in his garage.

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

Oops. Never mentioned where I started racing!
At that point, I had a Redline MX2 in chrome with a blue fork.
My buddies Robb Tellone and Hans Yu were already established racers & we hung out.
It was inevitable.
My mom took us to Itasca BMX track. She always went to the races in case I got hurt...
That was 1983. I raced in & off until about 2000.
Now, I have a new(old) bike & took a ride at The Hill last weekend & didn't break my neck!

Sounds so familiar...

My first bike that I really learned to jump was a Huffy Thunder Road. The big "breadloaf" of a seat was swapped out for a smaller seat to give it that BMX look and to shave off about 20 lbs. lol I rode that thing from '78 until '83 when I got my Mongoose. In '85 I got into skateboarding more, so I did both.

Once I got into high school, it was all about girls & playing music. My bike & board just sat, collecting dust. Once I got my driver's license, it was about girls, music, & driving up & down the Sunset Strip in Hollywood during the whole hair/glam metal days in the late 80s. At that time, having long hair & playing in a band was what it took to get the attention of many girls. It was awesome!

I got back into riding my first year in college, but I was into MTBing. I loved it! Still do.

Now I ride when I get the chance, which isn't very often. But I do play music almost everyday. That won't change.

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

It all started in the very late 70s with me. My dad used to play softball, and there was a track next to the ballfield. ( painter park west haven ct). One time it was race day when he had a game. Needless to say I was watching the races instead of the ball game. I started to bring my bananna seat columbia with me and ride the track( was about 7 years old) . Christmas 80 was my first " bmx " bike, white and blue huffy thunder bmx. All of a sudden there were columbia pro ams, huffy pro thunders popping up around the neighborhood!! Got a pro thunder after that , and christmas 81( or2) got a chrome pro lightning. I remember racing around the streets with my friends. Good times!!
In September 1982 we moved 3 towns away to Guilford Ct. This was home of footeland ( guilford) bmx. There were 3 cool bike shops in town that were 90% bmx, I was a 10-11 year old in heaven!! A kid next door raced, had a redline 102b, another kid had a black sting. I ended up with a redline 500a with z rims.I started racing my pro lightning. I raced until they closed the track in 86. We moved a town away and I met a good sizekd group of kids who were into bmx/ freestyle. We rode for years. I started to race again in 87, did it until 97 when I broke my ankle. I never really stopped riding, still do to this day!! Its a part of my life , part of my history, kinda makes me who I am. I never thought it would turn into a collector hobby. I am happy that I was there from the late 70s to the present to live the history of the sport!
Sorry about the long winded speech, I could go on forever.

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

I have some random ones around here. Mom has boxes of pictures, gonna take a while to look through them. My basement flooded in the late 80s and I know some were lost in that . My sister raced from 88-98 and I know she has pics. Will be a nice project. My good friend who moved away has been sending pics to me of all our cool 80s toys, bmx and honda atcs( my other passion)
On a side note, and this is no lie or bs... When my sister started racing in 88, I let her use my " old" skyway ta with red tuffs ( dead mint too ) and people laughed at it, called it a relic. Dad bought her a new bike quickly. Imagine if you brought that to a track now???? There would be a bunch of 40-45 year old men fighting over it!!!!! And i do not have the ta anymore , sold it in 2000

Re: WHERE DID YOU START BMX-RACING-FS-FLATLAND:PICS-PEOPLE-INSPIRATIONS...

Started when I was about 6. Got a Sears Free Spirit Spyder. I remember trying to get on it and I ripped my pants clear up through the back! lol
Had that until parents got separated and then got a Huffy bandit. Then I wanted a Schwinn Sting. I remember going to the Schwinn shop almost every day looking in the window. Parents didn't have a lot of $, and couldn't afford it so I rode my bandit a while longer. Then I got enough to buy a bike and wanted a "Race" bike. Got a GT Pro.
Started racing in Egg Harbor Township, NJ and got hooked. One day a local bike shop was at the race and came up to me and asked me if I wanted to be on their team! It was Beacon Bikes. I raced for them for 3 years then one day at a National I was practicing around the track (left my race gear on the bleachers) and went to jump and back tire hit a rut and I went over handlebars and crashed about 10 feet down. I was messed up, but didn't break anything. Missed the National the next day though sad
Did get 3rd place out of 28 riders the National a year later though big_smile
Then let a friend borrow my bike and he left his garage door half open and someone stole my bike hmm

cool

Rad story and pics. Keep them coming.

I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy. smile
