What is the best way to slot axles?
Hey guys and gals. I just finished lacing up my new wheels for my powerlite!!! Go to put the front wheel on just to find out it wont fit, because GT made there effen forks to only fit slotted axles! So I am looking for the best way to slot the front axle. I would just like to buy one but Crupi does not offer a slotted axle and it seems like if there is a simple way to do the work myself might as well right. Anyways any suggestions would be nice.
Thanks, Dan ![]()

Re: What is the best way to slot axles?
What's more valuable? The dropouts or the axle. I've done it on axles carefully with a dremel tool and it worked out well.

Sealed or loose bearing hub?

Re: What is the best way to slot axles?
Dont even want to think about doing the drop outs, axles around only like $20 to replace. I thought of trying to file them.

Re: What is the best way to slot axles?
I would opt for filing....nice and straight on each side....and the nuts should go on no prob, too. I've used a file to "slot" 14mm axles to fit in 3/8" dropouts.
Good luck!

May sound stupid, but I've never seen a front axle that was solid 3/8" where there was not removeable axle bolts (ie, Bullseye, etc). What are you running?

Re: What is the best way to slot axles?
I had same problem on a set of shimano dx hubs matching with a gt muscle fork... I just got a slotted axle from my LBS. But I have also filed an axle down. Plus I have had dropouts machined out like on my powerlite toxic. File the axle down is cheapest way obviously.... machine shops are kinda pricey

I am running the midschool crupi hubs that were made in Canada. The axles are solid.

I dont want to get another fork, you never get to see a build like mine with the OG fork. I understand why GT thought they should make there forks all slotted, its just a pain in the ass for me though lol I think I will shoot some before pics of the axle and give the file a try. Good news is I can order new axles from Crupi if I mess these ones up ![]()

Thought about doing that but wanted to do something myself. Last resort I will do this.

you could just file the bit that goes in the dropouts. no need to file the whole axle.

Re: What is the best way to slot axles?
I've used a grinder to do mine and it has worked. I also took some to my friend who is a machinist and he did some professionally for me. I must say I like them more than the grinded ones I did. ![]()

Re: What is the best way to slot axles?
Woah, that's nice! I personally couldn't bring myself to grind the axle (nothing wrong with it...I couldn't shoot a deer, but I sure love eating 'em).
Thanks for showing me...I have to now remember that I have seen a solid 3/8" front axle.

Re: What is the best way to slot axles?
A grinder is too fast and aggressive IMO. Here's a pic of the axle I dremeled. Just use low rpm and shave just a little off at a time and take your time.

oh this is a 3/8" axle you were asking about??? all of mine I've done were for 14mm axles! I was going to say hand filing a 14mm axle will take you awhile! ![]()
