THE OFFICIAL - Bike Rack/Stand/Storage Thread!!!!

Ok, so I've built a few bike racks over the years...  There's been a lot seen on this site.  Individual stands, PVC, wood, metal, hooks, etc.  I'm always interested in finding a great way to store my bikes.  Close enough together to save space, but far enough apart so I can pull them out if needed.  Also, something somewhat mobile, sturdy, etc.

I figured I'd just document a design that worked for me.  Maybe it will help others, and maybe others will post up their designs.

I'm not a terribly handy guy, so this isn't rocket science, though I did have a few mess ups..  luckily Dyno-Mike was there to advice my carpentry skills as I went along.

Ok, so this is what I've got.  I made 2 of these bike racks, designed to hold 6 bikes each.  I'll give you the info to build one.

First I bought some 2x4's (Which are not actually 2x4, FYI for measuring purposes, they are 1.5x4...  smile

Specifically 96" long (The math just worked)

Cut 2 pieces to 58.5"
Cut 12 pieces at 17.5"
Cut 10 pieces at 6"

You'll have this!!  (Again, remember, I'm building two)

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/3DEE3E01-21AD-4809-838A-10C3A756134B-2038-000002080D01EBB9.jpg

In my case, most of my tires are 1.75", so therefore I have everything measured out to fit that size.

I put it all together as below...

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/CB3C89BF-0715-4650-AC55-E95C0ED941D0-2038-00000208148FE72D.jpg

It's light, mobile...  not terribly long, keeps bikes tight, and organized, while still able to pull one out if needed.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/2E76867A-2730-4436-8D60-BB4E15F5A9DE-2038-00000208212EF8D5.jpg

Anyway, thought it would be helpful to have the dimensions, and semi-directions for building one.

I used 3" deck screws to put this together.  Everything was screwed from the bottom (That's what she said)

BTW, the 6" braces come in play just to support the slats.  I made one without, and they all bent outward, and the bikes didn't sit up straight.

Please feel free to post yours, as I think we all have different situations where one design might be better than another.

Peace out!

Cail

Nice rack tongue
If you add two wheels on one end and a small handle on the other side, you will have a simple mobile unit for displaying your bikes. Great idea cool

I like it! Easy, simple and cheap!

I have a similar setup made from 1/2" emt conduit welded together. Mine holds 5 across in the rack, stands up against the wall or can be put in a pickup bed laying down for multiple bike transportation. Not a clear pic of the rack but u get the idea.

Re: THE OFFICIAL - Bike Rack/Stand/Storage Thread!!!!

DID ALL THE 2X4 HOME MADE RACKS AND DID THE HOOKS ON THE WALLS THEN BOUGHT A DOZEN DISPLAY STANDS AND THEY WORK THE BEST BECAUSE YOU CAN FLIP FLOP THE DIRECTION AND SQUEEZE TONS OF BIKES CLOSE UP WITHOUT TOUCHING- THE STANDS WERE AROUND 30 EACH
.... I MADE A 15 BIKE STAND OUT OF 4X4S AND ONE TIME I DROPPED THAT SUCKER ON MY FEET AND TORE THEM UP BAD-DONT DO THAT

JOKE;A GUY WALKS INTO THE BAR AND ORDERS 3 DOUBLE SHOTS OF TEQUILIA. AS SOON AS THE BARTENDER POURS THE SHOTS THE GUY INSTANTLY SLAMS THEM DOWN. THE BARTENDER SAYS"YOU SURE DRANK THOSE QUICK BUDDY" AND THE GUY SAYS"YOU WOULD TO IF YOU HAD WHAT I HAVE" THE BARTENDER TAKES A FEW STEPS BACKWARDS AND SAYS  "WHAT DO YOU HAVE?" AND THE GUY SAYS"A BUCK FIFTY"  PICK UP LINE: I MAY NOT BE THE BEST LOOKING GUY IN THIS BAR BUT I AM THE ONLY ONE TALKING TO YOU.

Great idea! I have been waiting to break in my new saw, and this looks like the perfect plan. Thanx for posting the dimensions!

Just 1, I was building 2, so in the picture of all the cut wood, you'll see double of what I wrote above.

The above info is just for 1.  smile
