Race Inc serial # frame ID
Came across a R.I. 20" frame RA28XXX and curious as to year and was there a RA2 or a RA28? Don't see any of this prefix on the museum. What is it? Thanks for any help! Dante

RA is RaceInc Alloy. That early, an RA-7.
28XXX is probably 80/81 vintage.

Re: Race Inc serial # frame ID
Thanks for the replies I'll post pics after I finish taking all the spraybomb jobs off it. Raw metal is soft textured like it was shot peened or tumbled?
Kept searching and found Scraplord's post on PK's, Floval and RI serials where @ 2XXXX was poss mid '79. It does look like a RA7 and now I get the basic # sequence.
Amazing database here so happy to have discovered the Museum. Next time I'll keep searching harder because it IS on here somewhere!

Re: Race Inc serial # frame ID
From what I understand, there is no order to Race Inc's serials - Bill Bastian really just wasn't that organized. Certain parts of the RA-7 changed as Bastian started working with Scot Breithaupt of SE Racing, mainly the diamond drops and the lug behind the BB shell. This happened in '79/'80, and is when the RA serials started on the SE style drops. If the lug behind the BB has a bisecting weld, with RA #'s, your frame is a '79. Otherwise, it may be difficult to determine which year in the '80's it came out.

Re: Race Inc serial # frame ID
"Ball-burnished", if it wasn't a painted frame originally. I read that the frames were tumbled in a big drum (I'm guessing like a cement mixer full of ballbearings, the frame fixed in the centre) to harden the aluminium surface. You should be able to see the tiny depressions in the metal. I think this was instead of anodising, rather than as well as anodising, but if anyone can confirm or deny it would be of interest.
