1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

Despite having a Burner in the 80s my interest in BMX really took off after 2000, and back then I wanted a Haro like Dave Mirra rode. That year the magazine adverts showed the pro model, looking awesome in red with the whitewall tyres. Unfortunately by the time I bought my first Haro it was 2002, and the 540 model that year was slightly disappointing for a number of reasons (I couldn't afford a Flair or Pro!). In 2005 I picked up a 2000 540 Air, but still wanted a more pro spec one. Also, after seeing Nyquist riding an all-chrome one (which may have been a Backtrail) that's what I wanted.

So, inspired by this forum, I picked two chrome 1999 Mirra bikes up a few months back on the same day. This one was looking a bit shabby, and after picking it up I wondered if things weren't getting a bit out of a hand given how much stuff I'd been buying at that point. Upon arrival home I snapped a picture (below) and took it apart for storage. Unexpectedly over the last couple of weeks I've come by most of the bits I need for the build, so it's time to begin.

Here's where we start...

http://tk41.powweb.com/photos/540-air.jpg

Roughly the plan is to have better rims, cranks and brakes, new decals, tyres, etc. Everything from the late 90s era with an original-as-possible look to it. A later project will hopefully turn the 2002 bike into something more unique like the amazing bikes wired and Genix have produced.

Re: 1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

And just to get the ball rolling, here's my little bit of work on it today...

The Multisurface 3 tyres are very worn and not really any good, so they're going. The wheels are in reasonable shape, but the spokes are corroded and the 707X rims have some tasty curb marks in. The hubs meanwhile feel all right for bearing play but are caked in grease. Hmm, not really worthy of what I have in mind...

http://tk41.powweb.com/photos/wheels.jpg

Not a bad looking wheelset, but nonetheless, only the hubs will be making it through...

http://tk41.powweb.com/photos/hubs.jpg

Next step to clean the hubs and then calculate the spoke lengths, and then double check against a selection of the old spokes. I think they'll be about 176mm, but need to be sure.

Oh I tried, believe me I did, with a big long spanner! It wouldn't shift though. However, I pulled the spokes out without cutting them, so I reasoned that the new ones would go in alright. But yes, I see where you're coming from because I've made that mistake before!!

Re: 1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

It'll be slow going for a little while, but hopefully next week I can get started on the rest of it. For now it's just the wheels...

Hubs cleaned up and tatty stickers removed. I'd service the internals but I don't have a 19mm cone spanner at the moment. NOS Araya Super 7X rims, just like on my '98 Blammo. It would be nice to have a pair of Heffer rims but they're not so easy to find over here.

Just need to double-check the spoke lengths and then I'll soon have them built up.

Love the rims, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a NOS pair of super 7X hoops!!

Re: 1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

Well, they're 'ok', but not brilliant. On one of them the chrome has lifted in a couple of places, only very slightly. The thing is, looking at the ones on my Blammo, when it starts going, it starts going. I might be able to wax them or do something to protect them. I think this is the problem with older rims. I found some NOS Sun Black Box rims but two of them I had to send back because they'd been sat in a warehouse so long they'd started to go off...

Re: 1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

It's likely that the rims will be replaced with Alex Supra B rims instead. One of the Super 7X rims isn't good enough, and I'd rather save them for my Blammo because that's 95% original. No spokes yet, so the wheels are on hold. Today I got the frame out and gave the rust some attention. Mainly bits here and there like in the welds and where there have been stone chips. The forks and bars are in pretty good condition and on the whole the frame is good.

http://tk41.powweb.com/photos/haro-540-frame-3.jpg

http://tk41.powweb.com/photos/haro-540-frame-4.jpg

After getting most of that lot off I knocked out the BB cups as I'm fitting 3-piece cranks. Unfortunately the BB cups I had in mind to replace these had the wrong size bearings, so I've had to order a brand new sealed BB, which will work with a 19mm spindle. Here are the cranks though, and a brand new big block stem that I'll be polishing in due course...

http://tk41.powweb.com/photos/haro-540-cranks.jpg

Probably next will be new BB cups in the frame and new headset, at which point I'll sticker up the frame and give it a waxing. Then it's back to those wheels...

Re: 1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

In the end my friend couldn't get me 176mm spokes, so I had a go at building 3X with 180mm, but as suspected, too short. 184mm 4X did the trick, and the Alex Supra B rims, when de-stickered, don't look a million miles away from the Super 7X rims I was going to use originally...

http://tk41.powweb.com/photos/haro-540-wheels-1.jpg

After fitting a new 19mm sealed BB for those shiny cranks I dragged the frame indoors, cleaned it off with some thinners and applied the decals. I think I made a reasonably good job, using a 2000 version of the same bike as a guide...

So, here is the frame, forks and wheels. The tyres are unfortunately not Haro MS3s but are Primo V-Monsters. Below is a photo of some of the main parts, so actually there won't be a lot on this bike that was original...

Ah yeah the white one! I had to look at that earlier to see where the Fusion stickers go, as my 2000 doesn't have them. BTW, nice '88 FST ; )

Re: 1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

First of all, apologies to the mods for that post I made in another thread about decals - I have since read the thread about replica decal sales. I assure you I am in no way connected to the seller I recommended, but I appreciate your reasons for removing the post.

On with the build... I wanted to use a big block stem. Here it is after a long bath in caustic soda solution...

http://tk41.powweb.com/photos/haro-540-stem.jpg

Not looking up to much. I took it out to the polishing wheel and went at it for some time. It's getting there but it's taking ages to smooth of the rough casting finish. In the end I started to resent the stem as it was the one thing stopping me from getting the bike together. Instead I chose to give the original top loading Haro stem a quick clean up and fit that instead. Maybe I'll go back to the big block in due course.

The saddle, pictured below, is off my 2002 540 Air, the rest of which is in a sorry heap in the garden. I ought to do something with it, but for now the saddle is all that has been salvaged. Apart from minor rust to the rails and a small tear which I'll glue up, it's in good nick...

http://tk41.powweb.com/photos/haro-540-saddle.jpg

I decided to get on and make the bike look more like a bike. The wheels still need final truing and tightening, and there are some other parts to sort out like pedals, but most of it is there now. Getting the cranks on was easy, although the chainring has revealed itself to be bent quite severely. I'm telling you, the guy who sold that on eBay, I bet he couldn't believe his luck. There was a furious bidding war and I ended up paying the equivalent of about USD $35 for it, even though I could clearly see the teeth were warn. I'd like a meganuke, but this will do for now.

Fitting the saddle to the seatpost was a royal pain in the neck, just like with my other Mirra which has a similar saddle and the same post. The clamp is single bolt, and it just doesn't want to open up far enough.

Brakes will need fine tuning in due course. The barrel-adjuster in the frame for the rear brake had snapped off but I used a bolt-extractor to remove the bit from the frame, so that's ready for a new one. A brand new polished 990 brake will be fitted. Then it'll be pedals on, chain and a general tune up.

Here's a sneak preview of it in the spare room, which is where it'll stay for a while as I've got a busy few weeks ahead. There are eight bikes in the house now and it's getting out of hand...

Re: 1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

Do it!!!

The red one is a 2000 (as far as I know there wasn't a red one for 1999, and only the 2000 ones around then had 2pc bars) but spec-wise it's very similar. Behind that is another chrome 1999 in a kind of dirt/race configuration. All of those bikes need jobs doing to them and then I'll photograph them properly and add them to the museum.

This weekend I bought another Mirra, an S351, but I don't think it'll arrive until the end of the week...

Thanks for the comments!

Yeah I reckon it's a rider. Usually I ride my Sunday but I'm looking forward to taking the older bikes out once in a while for a play. This one will definitely be seeing some wooden ramps at any rate!

Re: 1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

Got the bike out today to do some more on it but didn't actually end up doing any work!! But it was an excuse to take a better photo of progress so far, which makes for encouraging comparison with the photo in the first post.

Still to go... true/tighten the wheels, true up the bent chainring, fit the brake and adjust it, fit the chain and then sort out some pedals. Oh and some bar end plugs! Also I've decided that I prefer the top-loading stem to the big block, so that'll be staying on it.

I'm not into newer bikes but wanted to pass the info for somebody who might be.
(I'm in no way related/profiting from the ad - just wanted to pass what seems to be good deal.)

Re: 1999 Haro Mirra 540 Air project - the bike I never had!

Funnily enough my next Mirra project is based on one of those exact bikes. My advice to anyone who buys a 2002 is ditch the cranks - they're great solid lumps of iron and they weigh a ton. I'm thinking a re-spray, older decal set like on my bike here, better 3pc cranks and kneesavers in black. Oh and maybe some chrome rims.
