Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

I learned around age 13 that Armorall+tires+plywood= Not getting the girl you're trying to impress because you have plummeted her with your bike. My pride hurt a lot more than her gouged leg did... lol what else has been done???

Total lol I remember a time when I was 13ish rode across a 4 lane rd to talk to some girls. Anyways there was a divider curb I didn't see. lol Flipped over the bars, smacked my head. All I could say was who put a curb there. lol Very impressive to say the least. roll

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

I remember learning how to support a 1/4" plywood ramp.  big_smile  Built a wall with some cinder block, layed out a piece of 1/4" ply (or something thin like that) went to hit the ramp and the wood bent shooting my ass skyward.

Traffic light just turned red on a large 5 point intersection.  I hit the gas, decided to pop a wheelie for everyone at the intersection and my front wheel came off.  I went down smack in the middle of the street and my Bro buckled over on the side from laughing his ass off.

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

I think I was around 12 st the time, my younger brothers probably 11 and 9 or something like that. Dad was doing some landscaping in the back yard and had a big dirt pile at the bottom of the downhill driveway in front of the garage. We'd torque down the hill, jump and land in the garage. (Had to pretty much put the brakes on as you landed if you didn't want to hit the rear wall.)
All went well until my youngest brother wanted to try and we let him. He bailed hard, head first into a shelf on the wall. Lucky he was wearing a helmet. Mom wasn't impressed but My brothers and I still laugh to this day when we look back at it. It was funny to watch.

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

Used to try and impress a girl by hitting the foot brake on my MotoMag and skidding to a stop. Wore through probably 3 Comp II Blue Skin walls like that.. Never impressed the girl.. sigh. 1st grade

Rode down the hill in my friends back yard to their driveway, forgot where the hand brakes were. Rode straight into the front of their car, flipped over the bars onto the hood. hurt like a mofo. 2nd grade.

Neighbor girl and i decided to have a bike race. She was 2 years young than i so obviously i had to show her who was faster. I decided he needed a finish line rope to hit to show who won. So i tied a jump rope between two poles... tied way to tight. Hit the rope at full speed on my throat. Bike kept going forward i went backwards.. She went under it... 4th grade. I won the race FYI.

Tried to do a wheelie and turn the bars/front tire sideways in the air. Lost my balance quickly and went down, bars left a scrape from my belly button to my arm pit.... 5th grade.

Riding with my left hand on the right side grip holding a drink with my right hand. Riding down a busy street I decided, oh i can turn right like this and pulled back too much, instantly flipped sideways, spilled the drink but luckily didn't get hit by a car. 10th grade.....

Bunch of hard lessons in physics. And gravity.... Cruel $#$@@

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

One night I over tightened my clipless pedal on my new pimped out mtb.  The next day I totally forgot that I had done this and road up to a bunch of hardcore mountain bikers at a stop light thinking I was the shiz and i couldn't get out of my pedals and fell over sideways stuck on my bike.  I sat there squirming on the ground with my bike trying to get my pedals to release and they're all looking at me like "What the hell are you doing!???"  lol

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

Tried to impress a girl at the ATM on base in Augsburg Germany. I was on my Paramount mtn bike and went to bunny hop the curb. I was flying!!! I got the front way up in the air, but was going too fast to get the rear wheel up in time. Totally smashed the wheel into the curb causing it to look more like a heart than a hoop. Funny thing is I did not pop the tube. Front wheel slammed into the ground, I made an audible "Umpffff" but kept going.

I don't think she was impressed, and it was months until I could afford another rear wheel.

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

Age 13 I was heading to the local convenient store with a friend. Well one of the younger tag a long kids overheard our plans. He decided he was going to come along despite me telling him he was not invited and that I didn't have his mother's permission. He was probably 9 or 10.

So we take off and he caught up with us when we stopped at a busy intersection. My friend saw an opening in traffic and headed out into the 4 lane road. The kid did the same even though I screamed for him to stop. my so called friend was more of an @ss than a friend. Since the kid told his mother he was going with me I felt totally responsible for him and I hated that he came a long.

So the kid took off into traffic thinking it was clear because "Joe" took off to cross the street. Well Joe made it across and the kid well he got across 2 lanes only to have a truck pulling a boat strike his handle bars. The kid freaked out and bailed off his bike before the bike was struck. The truck stopped and the kid was in the middle of the road screaming. I bolted to the center where the kid was jumping up and down screaming. Traffic slowed down. The kid was unhurt but was totally freaked out and was crying. The guy got out of his truck and he was dressed in a suit. He started screaming at me but I told him that this kid was not mine etc and he was a tag along and that I had told him to wait for me. His boat had a scratch down the side and he lost a tail light off the boat trailer. He gave us a good scolding and ruled it out as an accident and he took off after he made sure the kid was ok.

Now I realize that we probably should have called the police to make sure the kid wasn't hurt and that the guy was checked out. We abandoned our trip and I left the kid back at the apartment complex where we lived. Not sure if his mother ever found out but he never followed us again or asked to go.

A few years earlier...

My aunt used to sit us during the summer when my mom was at work. One day we were out back of the town home jumping a small ramp on our bikes. Some new kid we didn't know rode by. He was bragging that our ramp wasn't tall enough and he could jump anything. He was probabaly 12. I think I was around 10. He had sandy blond hair and it was wavy or curly. He rode a black bike that had shocks on the back. I remember he had black box bars and black cobra grips.

He said to make it higher and he would jump it. The ramp was placed at the edge of the driveway and we added a few cinder blocks. The landing was on the grassy hill below it. Well the kid took off through the parking lot and hit the ramp. He definitely caught the air but his landing sucked. He and his bike flipped head over heals in a jumbled mess. We could hear his screams as he tumbled into the field. He lay breathless and wheezing as we approached. He started crying and couldn't move his arms very well.

Someone fetched my aunt and she gathered him up with his bike and took him home. We later learned that he had broken a wrist and his opposite arm was broken too. We saw him one more time that summer after his casts were off but he no longer wanted to jump the ramp. At least that is how I recall it.

I get this question often so here it is to save everyone time. I do not have any Mongoose DMC decals left. I was lucky enough to find a small bunch of NOS decal sets in an old bike shop that no longer exists and I have since sold them all. Sorry. I wish you all the best of luck with your DMC builds.

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

Not dumb per se, but clearly the weirdest thing that's ever happened to me.

I was goofing off behind a grocery store on night - on the loading dock, curbs and what not. I kept launching the small bank and wall riding the smooth side of a dumpster. After a while, I sat down and had a snack and apparently an envelope with my name on it fell out on the ground.

I found out about the envelope when the police showed up at my door to question me about why/when I was there, how long, who was with me, what did I know about the black arcs on the side of the dumpster, etc.

Seems at some time, unknown if before or after my session, someone dumped a body in that dumpster. Was found the next morning.

Freaked me out good for a long time.

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

a friend and i were weaving through traffic one time getting to where we were going.  we decided to ride eachothers bike on the way because we were 13-14 at the time and each thought our bike was superior.  i got on his bike and went to fly across the street and t boned a caravan.  i was freaked that id have to pay for the van so i jumped on the bike and took off.  prob another family in my city telling the story of the kid they hit that rode away.

we got a nice 2 year bann from the local mall for going into the hall areas and food court in the middle of the night with our bikes and shadow sliding and grinding all over the marble.

Yeah whatever you do don't try to ride with hands on opposite sides of the bars and try to brake. Right hand on left grip, left hand on right grip. That ended stupidly int he middle of the road.

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

We used to get food trays from burger king, and take them out to our flatland parking lot next door and ride up to them really fast, and slam on your brake as your tire hit the tray.

Seriously, you could slide SOO far doing that. We kept at it, and one day I tried to do it with my front wheel.

Bad Idea. It dumped me right on the ground, as the wheel slid out from under me.

My buddies laughed at me, and I HAD to do it again to prove to them that it could be done. Pretty soon, I could do it front wheel and even let the bike spin around without falling!

We spent hours learning how to do all kinds of skid tricks with trays. As the years went by we even used 4 trays and did it with our cars... That was fun too!

Some funny and dumb stuff.
Trying to reenact the log scene from rad, we filled the holes in a woodpile with smaller sticks to make it smoother. On our 40th trip or so, the last log slipped! I ended up having to restack 2 cords of wood( big logs), as my dad yelled repeatedly "you could have broke your nads on the gooseneck"... lol

I'd say front wheel rolling away when popping a wheelie lol lot of us done that. Oh once got a new seat didn't tighten it up all the way jumped on to ride and fell off(seat tilted back) got my junk pulled thru rear brake and brace. Yep using gas station air pumps an blowing tubes a lot lol riding w/bars sticking out of my grip, never got hurt but it's still a dumb thing to do cuz I seen it tear ppls up.

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

Don't know how I forgot this. We had just finished building a 6 foot quarter/launch ( lol ). My friend towed me on his bike, I was on my Santa Cruz everslick, the ramp was still soaked from bending it. Well a rock-n-roll turned into me breaking my shoulder after sliding off the end of the ramp 6 feet up. I didn't realize it was broke until after 5 minutes of skating my arm weighed about 50 pounds... <-- last time I tried crazy shit like that...

Re: Dumb stuff you've done on your bike...

My VERY first time trying to impress the ladies , doing an endo  , going WAY too fast ... Got my foot stuck really good in the fork , went face first over the bars , broke a tooth and almost broke my ankle lol
Checking out chicks one time came fast around the corner and hit a dog , I went one way , the Dog went the other way and got hit by a car , the car wasn't going fast enough to hurt him though but how ever , the front rim on my bike got bent
Another time , hitting cracks in the side walk , of course , in front of a hot girls house, came back dn , the handle bars loosened and dropped , whacking my chin off the neck cutting it open , sat there bleeding for hours while she sat inside laughing with her friends, couldn't figure out why, but found out the next day I split my pants right down to the crack of my a$$$ lol
