Post up your S&M MAD DOG info!

ok so i've been trying to get info on s&m mad dogs for a little while now, but i havnt gotten very far. i would need for you guys to post up pics of your serial numbers and top tube length. (you can black out the last couple numbers of the serial if you want)

the main problem is we dont know is A.how long the top tube lengths are for which serial numbers and B.you always here about the standard mad dog and the mad dog pro. i know in 88 both did exist, but didnt the "dirtbike" take the place of the mad dog pro in 89? does the mad dog pro still exist in 89-90? and if so, what is the difference in top tube length and serial number? if you can contribute it would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Post up your S&M MAD DOG info!

Head tubes seem to differ between DB's and MD's. The Dirtbikes I've seen have the wide rings and the Mad Dogs have narrow ones.

I don't know my Mad Dog S/N offhand nor do I currently have quick access to it. But I do know that it has a 19.5"TT
here's a shot of the bike so you can see some details like HT. I'll try to get other info later & add it to the topic

Re: Post up your S&M MAD DOG info!

I haven't measured my top tube yet (remind me where to measure from), but my Mad Dog's serial is S&MP12890360.  I'm assuming the "P" means that it is a Pro based off the latest discussion in the Hoarders thread:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-vnAZjNgNGRw/Tve82XfsTXI/AAAAAAAAEOs/HOBhN_v9woc/s800/IMG_7483.JPG

My brother's Mad Dog (which we've had since 1991) is S&MP11900081.  It needs a little TLC and is on our project list for next year.  Hate to scrape off those rare Dirtbike decals!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-FEkzepKNaPI/TjRhAI0lllI/AAAAAAAAEBk/WM8HfIBzFkM/s800/IMG00367-20110708-2156.jpg

Just curious- why would people hesitate to post their serial numbers?  I'm a car enthusiast and there is the constant debate about blacking out your license plate number in pics you post in that arena, which seems odd since the plate is visible every time you leave the garage.

Awesome thread Papalone!

Measure from the centre of the seattube to the centre of the headtube smile

Also (dunno if it helps), the '88 GT made MD's have this brake bridge:

awesome! brendan, your mad dog serial number is exactly what im trying to figure out. as the "P" indicates, its a Pro, if you could measure your TT, it would answer atleast one of the questions. measure from center of seatpost to center of top tube. i found it most benneficial to meaure like this:

Re: Post up your S&M MAD DOG info!

i tried measureing that way and it was coming up 20.25, i was wondering if it was the headtube angle that was throwing it off. hmm

Yeah - know what you mean, although I think all the early S&M frames have slight variants on the TT lengths - like my MD posted above which comes out at 18.5" (when the old ads say 17.25" and 18.25" - although I don;t know if Ryans ad scan is from late 88/89).

I have never seen that before! I thought the gt made had the round tube brake bridge. That looks like a VDC of white bear style brake bridge..

Re: Post up your S&M MAD DOG info!

im pretty sure thats a myth, because ive seen head tube rings on dirtbikes having big and small. i think it all depends on manufacturer and/ or if they just had a pile o' parts when they were assembling them.

Cool, great info here mate!
That third pic down of the dirt bikes serials has me guessing though, it looks too similar to a mad dog but with the P stamped lower and not after the s&m stamping?

Re: Post up your S&M MAD DOG info!

One of the big problems is repop decals. I think a lot of Dirtbikes have been restickered as Mad Dogs due to the difference in value. There aren't many OG decaled frames left out there to judge by. I wouldn't trust any frame that has been restored or had the decals replaced for this research.

For the record - mine (12890409) came to me with no decals and a bad spraybomb.

yeah definitely man, thats why getting top tube lengths is crucial. without them, this thread is worthless hmm

Cool- I'll measure it tonight and post a pic of my results.  I also own a 90 B&E made Dirtbike, but the number on that one is different.

I would definitely have been sketched out buying my Mad Dog last year if the serial number wasn't similar to my brother's bike, which I know is a Mad Dog (I also purchased it from se666, who seems to be one of the more legit collectors on this site).  In 1992 Brennan Brown (who rode for Standard for a bit and has a part in Style Cats) moved back to Nashville and was riding a Mad Dog.  It was too short for him, so he sold it to my brother who has had it ever since.  When we got it there were OG Mad Dog decals on it, but they were thrashed do my brother peeled them and put on the "10 beats stronger" Dirtbike decals shown in the pics.  At the same time Brennan also sold a 90 Dirtbike to my friend who held onto the bike for nearly 20 years until he gave it to me late last year.

This thread is great- I'm ready to build mine up!

s&m ST= standard mad dog
s&m P (with shorter tt) is Mad dog Pro
s&m P (with 20" TT) is a Dirtbike

you can see that in 1990 the mad dog pro's kept the P and the dirtbikes got the XL.

Be interesting to find all this out, as I always thought "SM P" = DB, not Mad Dog?

In fact - got an email from Chris M. that says:

'the DB’s had SMP on the drop'

Which always made me think that:

Pre DB coming out MD's just had the SM serial.
DB comes out, MD's get the 'ST' and 'XL' serial, and DB's get the 'P' serial?

Re: Post up your S&M MAD DOG info!

I may be way off here as my Mad Dog was traded away long ago when I was still young and dumb.

But I always thought one of the biggest tells between a MD and DB was the rear dropouts. My MD had 2 1/8 inch thick dropouts welded together to make the drops thicker/stronger. I thought by the time DB's started being produced they were being cut from a single piece of 1/4 thick chro-mo.

Am I wrong?
