1973 Shields Monoshock

Here we have a picture of my childhood 1973 Shields Mono Shock that was bought at Beaver Lumber. These bikes are scarce!

Here we have a picture of my childhood 1973 Shields Mono Shock that was bought at Beaver Lumber for a near $300.00 back then! Me and my best friend Wally Hagar had many great summer days jumping and pulling cat walks down the streets of Vanier Ontario, Canada!
Back in the day we would call this a tank because of it's weight ! Pure STEEL baby! A car would stand a better chance of getting damaged in a collision with this bike. There is a brother bike like this and it came in black and was put out by CCM called a BOBCAT that came with a front rod suspension rather that fat boy shocks ( with shields exclusive wheel lock at bottom)like on mine. This was a labour of love to restore 85% all original decals shocks wheels, and bars. Only thing  replaced was crank , tires, seat, paint.
This one is for you buddy! Wally Hagar R.I.P 1985
Enjoy,
Wayne Lacasse

DUDE! You did a great job, Wally would be proud. Now, can you live up to your old nickname: Catwalk King? I guess we will find out this summer old man, LOL!

Re: 1973 Shields Monoshock

Great bike, amazing build and even better story!!!

Yes, growing up in the 70's in Canada I also remember doing "Catwalks" with my pals. That was the big thing BITD. For those who don't know, Catwalking is doing a wheelie as far as you can! Often we would count the houses you could Catwalk past, saying things like, "Wow! Johnny just did 12 houses!!!" We used our customized CCM Mustangs (sort of equivalent to the Schwinn Stingrays in the US) and Catwalked all over the neighborhoods for years, in between ramp jumping on the street and in parking lots, skidding, bunny hopping and trail riding in the local woods... Great days... The early stages of BMX.

Eventually I was able to score a 1976 Mongoose directly from Skip Hess (1st one in Canada) and that was the end of the Mustangs for me... That Mongoose changed my life and killed the Mustangs reputation in our town!!! LOL!

Anyhow, great post and very, very cool bike and history. Thanks for sharing.

A "Squonk" is like a Mongoose only much harder to find...

Re: 1973 Shields Monoshock

Tres swank.!!!
I had one of those ccm monoshock's but it was yellow. Black decals but yellow frame.
Man.... so much fun breaking it piece by piece. building bigger and bigger ramps. On the fly driveway repairs like a twisted coat hanger on the coaster brake, washers and stem shims fashioned from coke cans. Using screwdrivers to pry the chain off and vice grips to put them back together. SHEESH!!! Learned so much on that bike, becauseof that bike. Most important lesson was to love the ride.
Thanks for posting this awesome rebuild. So many great things came from the 70's (cept disco). Thanks for bringing em back.....

Re: 1973 Shields Monoshock

Sweet bike, Mr. Lacasse! I didn't know monoshocks were made in 1973. Nice to know all the history behind it.

Ride on. Wally would have been very proud.
