Re: 1980 Schwinn Sting Competition

If you're gonna store it long term, I'd seriously recommend that you diss-mount the tires during storage.
Because if they're not cracked up already, they could get that way from the weight of the bike resting on them over the next 20 years.
Just a thought. wink

Re: 1980 Schwinn Sting Competition

Holy cow nick, this is awesome. When did this happen?

I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy. smile

About 8 months ago I found this. I got to get a pic of the box up too and all the misc. parts still sealed in bags.

Re: 1980 Schwinn Sting Competition

Dibs on the tires when you part it out! lol

Great looking bike! I'm sure it's more like put in under the bed in the bedroom (as opposed to the attic) and hope the wife doesn't notice. You want that NOS bike to live in a nice temperature controlled environment.

Instant Fav here!!

Re: 1980 Schwinn Sting Competition

Nick, it was great to meet with you in person the other day. I will keep you posted about our move.

This was a totally cool bike to see up close. I can't believe these guys sugesting you part this one. That would be insane! How many of these are out there like this? This might be the only one. I would air the tires enough to keep shape and never take anything apart. This bike has never been messed with since it came from the factory. I wouldn't start now.

Talk to later Nick,

Steve.

Re: 1980 Schwinn Sting Competition

Crazy thing I just noticed after all this time. I was looking at the forks and it has been common knowledge that Sting Comps had Gen 2 forks and SX2000s got the gen1 forks. On top of that it is really rare to see gen1 forks with the "SBC" decals, they usually have the round "Chromemolybdenum" coin decals. The old Schwinn chat board stated that Sting Comps never had gen1 forks... but this one does. Interesting!
