**** "UNSTAMPED" 1984 GT PERFORMER REGISTRY THREAD ****

There has been a recent rash of "UNSTAMPED" 1984 GT Performers coming out of the woodwork lately. For those not in the know, this was GT's 1st stab at their own Freestyle specific frameset.  The very early ones did not have the typical GT stamped into the baloney cut on the top tube. I heard rumors that there were only a couple dozen of these produced before they started stamping them, but I cannot confirm or deny that rumor. Anyone with more intimate knowledge of this, please chime in......maybe Eddie Fiola will have some answers! tongue

Early 1984 ad from the UK:
http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/q523/Hawk5170/GTPERFORMER.png

I am starting this thread with the hopes of accounting for the ones that are out there. If you own one, please post a picture of it up here, along with the serial # so we can keep track of the ones that have been identified......

Mine was manufactured in February 1984 with the serial # being 2841661. Frame, forks, headset, bars, crankset, pedals, and seatpost are my actual survivors from BITD.

http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/q523/Hawk5170/OldSchoolCool014.jpg

Let's see what else is out there. Maybe we can get an actual website to document these rare examples of the early days of Freestyle BMX for GT, much like the one that is out there for the early Haro Freestylers!

Show me whatcha got!!!

NOTE: Credit has to go to RL Paulie for suggesting that this thread be created to document these pieces of history.

I am starting this thread with the hopes of accounting for the ones that are out there. If you own one, please post a picture of it up here, along with the first 3 or 4 numbers of the serial # so the date of manufacture can be determined......no need to post it in it's entirety, if you don't want to. Pretty much all of the ones I have seen are from February.

Mine was manufactured in February 1984 with the serial # being 284XXXX.

Here's my pre stamp, serial # 2840808 .I have already asked Eddie Fiola if he knew how many pre stamp Performers were manufactured and unfortunately he doesnt.
Great idea of setting up registry and maybe even web site.

Re: **** "UNSTAMPED" 1984 GT PERFORMER REGISTRY THREAD ****

No offense guys but a "registry" should include full disclosure of the serial number.

Now let's see how early these go. Looks like Performer Jon has the earliest example so far. I'm already disappointed that it looks to have been refinished. Was it always yellow? I would think all the early ones were chrome.

I bought it like this but I think it has been refinished, not sure if it was originally yellow though.

My serial # is 2841661. Mine might not be the earliest example here in the BMXmuseum, but how many can claim to have owned theirs since 1984?

On another note, as far as I know, the UNSTAMPED versions were only available in chrome.

Haha! Sorry man that was a little harsh (and removed), but it is a Registry thread after all. wink
It just drives me insane everyone posting the first couple digits and then the XXXX bs on this site.
What is the fear of posting the full SN? I never understood it.

Re: **** "UNSTAMPED" 1984 GT PERFORMER REGISTRY THREAD ****

No worries.....I was just trying to respect the wishes of those who may not want to disclose it. However, you are absolutely right....if this is going to turn out to be a true registry for the Unstamped GT Performers out there, then the serial number is a must. With the frequency that framesets change hands around here, it will be the only way to track what has already been accounted for to date.

I posted my serial number and cleaned things up a little bit so this thread doesn't go off on some crazy tangent.......

Carry on, folks......who else has one?

I am curious about whether  the unstamped versions were only available in chrome as I recently saw a survivor for sale on UK ebay in white and secondly a guy in the UK bought a yellow unstamped version form Juan 'BMX Addicts' which supposedly has the lowest serial # known.smile

Is it possible that the really early yellow ones were made for Eddie, or were special orders?
Would Eddie have ridden a regular production (serial numbered) bike?

I get this question often so here it is to save everyone time. I do not have any Mongoose DMC decals left. I was lucky enough to find a small bunch of NOS decal sets in an old bike shop that no longer exists and I have since sold them all. Sorry. I wish you all the best of luck with your DMC builds.

And looking back at the others in this thread, I am amazed at how close the serials are.

Yeah that is interesting how they are so close but are found all over. I looked in the museum and only found one other unstamped GT frame I posted on his bike thread with a link to this one. He didn't have a serial listed but said it was Feb 84 and it had the bologna cut on the back.

Here is what I found so far in this thread sorted by lowest number first.

Re: **** "UNSTAMPED" 1984 GT PERFORMER REGISTRY THREAD ****

Thanks for participaing in this everyone.....who knows, maybe these could be as rare as that 82 Haro Freestyler. I've heard that GT may have only made a few dozen of the unstamped framesets. I'm sure some of them found there way to the local landfill over the years. Let's see how many more surface.....

The count is currently at 9 in this thread, 10 with this one..... http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=349363
