The Mighty KEVIN JONES 1988 Pro Freestyle Tour Inspired Build
Let me begin by saying that this bike has been in the works since 1/12/2012... the date I joined. I've bought, sold and traded for almost 10 months to get this project where it is today... and it's still only 95% complete. Two 87 PFTs, two 88 Pro Performers, an 87 Ricochet, a 1990 Pro Series, and an 89 Pro Series have passed through my hands to finally obtain the parts needed for this build... it wasn't easy.
The members here (many I now consider friends) have been the driving force behind accomplishing my goal... to closely replicate the mighty Kevin Jones 1988 GT Pro Freestyle Tour but do so with a little of my own style - a decision I believe The Master would/will appreciate as there can only be one true original.
Here's my build... The Mighty KEVIN JONES 1988 Pro Freestyle Tour Inspired Build

Re: The Mighty KEVIN JONES 1988 Pro Freestyle Tour Inspired Build
The Frame / Fork
I received this awesome set from LegoMyDayGlo in trade for a survivor 87 DGP PFT.
Powder Coating
- by Chip at C4 Industries (As I understand it, it actually went through two separate powder coatings before Chip deemed it finished.) Chip is the best of the best in my opinion.
Decals
- From Ultrahive
- Applied myself in accordance with the 88 GT Catalog Frame / Fork stand alone sets. I went this route as apposed to the traditional placings because I wanted to make the statement that this bike has been built from the frame and fork up... it could never have been purchased as a factory complete with my finished parts list.
You'll notice I've omitted the "Team Model" decal as this bike is not being built to "Team Model" specs.

The Chrome Quote...
Handlebars
- received as part of my trade with Lego
- Powdered by C4 Industries
- Photo below shows the beautiful finished product that's about to be media blasted off
- Media blasting uncovered a crazy sideways and barely visible "CR-MO" stamp... as if they went through the stamping machine sideways and missed most the entire stamp... I like it because that's 80s GT style all the way!
87-88 Robinson Layback Seatpost
- NOS Raw (never painted or chromed)
- "RRR" Stamped
GT Power Series Spindle Bolts
- Exceptionally nice repops purchased from a member here
- Pictured raw / unfinished
Here's the photo I shot and notated for Superior Chrome - Houston for the purpose of the price quote...

I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy.

Re: The Mighty KEVIN JONES 1988 Pro Freestyle Tour Inspired Build
One of the first bikes I bought during this process was a "Custom Painted" purple 1990 GT Pro Series. It came with a decent set of black/black GT tires, a black three GT logo stenciled Power Disk, A crazy painted 43T GT Chain Ring, a couple of newish Mongoose seats, and last but not least.... a "GT Three Piece Crank".
The guy told me he was angry that people were asking him to take off the cranks and keep the bike. He and I both agreed that the paint job was perfect on the bike and I paid him his asking price. He shipped me the bike a week later.
Here's that "Three Piece Crank" before restoration...
The bike came with everything you see here with exception to the GT Crank Tool, which I later found in the beta section here. It's NOS and never touched a bolt.

Re: The Mighty KEVIN JONES 1988 Pro Freestyle Tour Inspired Build
I started an entire thread a while back aimed at figuring out what parts KJ was rockin' on his 88. The hardest part to nail down is the stem. We narrowed it down to being either a square corner 1st gen DK Freestyle stem or a GT Pro Series with a Potts Mod.
I initially opted for the DK Freestyle. I found a really nice true 1st gen (correct knurling) square corner stem in the beta section. It came with a mismatched wedge and was originally setup with a race bolt. DK made this stem in a freestyle version (hollow bolt) but they are really hard to find. So, I was pumped to get it as is because I had no plans of using the race bolt.
Here it is as I bought it...
About a month later, I lucked into a NOS DK Hollow Bolt & Wedge on eBay by way of a saved search I had setup to find one. I hit the Buy It Now and the bolt was mine.
Purists BEWARE Beyond This Point
My next move was to drill the DK for the DK Hollow bolt (aka Potts Mod).
Here's what surfaced...
I was Stoked about my DK Potts Modded DK Stem until I stumbled into this pic while breezing through GO Magazine...
If you look at enough Kevin Jones photos, you realize he stuck to the parts he liked even when he got a new bike. That Pro Series Stem w/ the Potts Mod didn't come on 1990 GT PFTs... neither did a few of those other parts. But, we'll get to that later.
[Edit] It just occurred to me that the bike in the above pic is KJ's 1990 WAL Riot with 1990 GT PFT Bars... and the rest of his parts.
It also occurred to me that all the Freestylin' photos show a rounded back on his stem... the DK has a hexagonal shaped back.
Conclusion: KJ was rockin' a Potts Modded Pro Series Stem in 88-89.
I Potts Modded my Pro Series Stem (removed from my 89 Pro Series) using my NOS DK Stem Bolt / Wedge... perfect for this stem because the DK wedge is pretty much identical to the original GT Pro Series wedge. They're a perfect match and this is my stem...
