2011 SE Racing P.K. Ripper 29

The great "all arounder" "big BMX bike" project

2011 PK Ripper 700c looptail BMX-style project (It's not a 29". but they keep changing back to a 29" Big Ripper, which it's not).
I’ve been playing around with this idea for a while. I’d like to thank dedmann for answering my questions about your 700c Ripper, which guided my size choice and year choice.
So, the idea was to build an “all arounder” that could keep up with the wife on daily 15 mile+ rides. Instead of riding a 24” with insanely tall gearing or a non-BMX single speed track bike, this seemed like a ‘have my cake and eat it’ bike. I also get to be fully nostalgic every time I look at it too.
I can haul on it, very very fast, but I also can play in the dirt, jump in the rock quarries, and even have fun in the skate/bike park.
Oh, had to put 29” as wheel size choice, since there’s no 700c option. Hope this gets approved.
Mostly stock at this point with a few upgrades.
Here’s the ‘dirt’…
~Frame - PK Ripper 700c looptail - 6066 Aluminum- The 2011’s had massive head tube gussets, larger tubing and are extra strong compared to some of the early years of the 700c Rippers. It’s 49cm(seat tube) sized and has a roomy 22” top tube length.
~Fork - SE Landing Gear
~Cranks - They’re the 3pc version of SE’s Hauler cranks - 48 spline with hollow chromoly spindle.
~Sprocket - Rennen 39T - forged 7075 aluminum. I needed taller gearing, wanted to switch from 1/8” chain to 3/32, and the Rennen is significantly lighter than the 36T SE ‘bubble’ sprocket that came on it… and much cooler looking, in my humble opinion.
~Bottom Bracket - SE Euro sealed w/Green Speed bearings
~Pedals - JP Precision Pro Squares. Upgraded with stainless steel spindle bolts. These are cool, but are in way too nice condition and are bit aggressive for long rides. So lately I’ve been using a pair of Wellgo MG-1 magnesium pedals that I’ve stripped and are in the slow process of polishing with plans to clear anodize them and add titanium spindles in the near future. I kept the JP’s on for the photos, though. They definitely do compliment to bike’s look and feel.
~Stem - Affix Strangler 6061 T6 Alloy - 48mm reach. Forged with a cool clamping mechanism. Light too, only 9.1 oz. I 'flipped' it to add bar height.
~Wheels - SE sealed high flange 32H hubs with Velocity Chukker rims (the “chukkers” are VERY tough rims).
~Tires - Ritchey Speedmax Cross Pro - 700c x 35c (fat knobbies). Kevlar bead (trying to fight my weight weenie tendencies, but this simple tire upgrade dropped 1lb 4oz off the bike… and more importantly made it ‘dirt worthy’ and properly BMX style)
~Freewheel - Excess Pro Series 13T - Cold forged 4130 chromoly. 3-pawl design w/30 points of engagement. I got rid of the stock low-quality 14T that came on the bike. White Industries doesn’t make smaller freewheels, so I decided to try one these instead of ACS Crossfire, etc. based on a couple reviews. Very high quality and almost as precise as an ENO, just not sealed. It's nice and loud (like a White Industries ENO, absolutely no 'side play' or slop and very Very smooth. I'm quite impressed with it so far.
~Chain - YBN Super Hollow Pin - light & strong
~Headset - 1 1/8" Tange seaaled threadless
~Bars - Se Sterling 2.5" Rise Alloy w/ Crossbar, 24”-ish wide
~Grips - ODI Toadstools, 130mm with Lizard Skins donuts (the narrow bars required something different than my standard 145mm DK Tsuka preference )
~Brake - Tektro R365 Dual Pivot brake. Swapped out the stock 3 finger lever for a Tektro 2 finger BMX lever. Might put the front brake back on. Park riding and endos galore are simply too much fun to resist.
~Seatpost - 3D Forged alloy, 27.2mm diameter
~Seatpost clamp - SE “retro” clamp - Polished aluminum - cool ‘donut’ style.
~Seat - SE Lightning Boss (w/bottle opener…’rolls eyes’..haha)
So far, this thing is an absolute blast to ride… almost scary fast & extremely nimble(on the ground and in the air). Without going crazy on weight weenie upgrades and staying on a strict budget, I have it close to 21lbs, which is actually lighter than my 1994 ELF 24” Cruiser. I plan to continue gradually upgrading as my budget allows.
And for 'posterity'... Many more photos can be viewed at: http://s1117.photobucket.com/albums/k58 … 20Project/
