New project RICKMAN FREESTYLER

well im on to my forth build now, after my DP Firebird freestyler, Mongoose FS-1 and my Kuwahara KZ1.
this was a nice find in a second hand shop, didnt know what it was till i got it home, just thought it had potential smile

as i got it:http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/mattbloke7r/IMAG1548_zps07f80de7.jpg
http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/mattbloke7r/IMAG1550_zps5c8d7768.jpg

a bit of closer looking showed a set of shimano DX pedals, suntour power stem, TUFF NECK power disc and a tange bottom bracket

stripped and ready to get rid of the 10 odd layers of paint with paint stripper recommended by superbike dan

the powder coating is tough as hell! so after 4 odd hours, i called it a day, will crack on tomorrow. the frame underneath is pretty much mint which is a result probably due to the many coats of paint

serial No intact

tuff neck power disc saved by the paint

Re: New project RICKMAN FREESTYLER

spent another few hours today trying to remove the 30 year old powder coat. bit more progress, but will need to wait till my finger prints grow back before the last assault.
frame underneath is pretty mint, the only defets i have found so far are 2x TINY dinks (biggest is maybe 2mm across) will get these Braze filled and smoothed back then just a tidy up of the drop outs and then she is ready for either paint or chrome

yes but gt haro and hutch would never have welding as neat as a rickman, 531 tubes and brazing

2nd in freestyle bike of the year 1984 in bmx action

i have just picked up a set of nos forks for one of these

Re: New project RICKMAN FREESTYLER

No question the brazing looks beautiful, but its not as strong as TIG welding, also costs less to do.

Re: New project RICKMAN FREESTYLER

The braising is more time intensive so its actually more expensive, also the joins are just as strong as tig welding. But unlike toy welding you don't end up over heating the tubing and having it snap either side of the weld wink

The joint under the braze is where the real art is.

Re: New project RICKMAN FREESTYLER

well, managed to source some bars for it... or so i thought!

ad for the bars read, 'some chrome flaking off, could do with a powder or re-chrome'

delivered this morning and the rust is almost totally through the tubing!

to make matters worse they have been cut done by an inch only on one side???

oh well back to the search sad

Wow check out the fillet brazing detail on this frame !
This is craftsmanship plain and simple !
I'd buff the frame and clear coat it , protect and display what some guy worked his arse off for a few pounds !

Again wow , a freaking fillet brazed freestyler !!

Re: New project RICKMAN FREESTYLER

a little progress at last smile managed to score a set of bars/redline fork lifter stem combo from t 'bay. arrived this morning, and had a crack at them this evening.

og finish looks much better in the photos, but chipped in places with rust spots starting to show underneath, so i didnt feel bad about taking them back to bare finish. still a bit to go but you get the idea   wink

Re: New project RICKMAN FREESTYLER

progress made smile after much thought, i went ahead and clear lacquered the frame to show off the beautiful braising  :smitten: although i was in two minds about the look until i popped on some of Del's amazing decals and then "POW" it suddenly looked right smile

keeping with the raw and gold(braising) look i got a minty takagi 180 crank, gold Tuf neck power disc, silver ammaco 46t chain wheel and some minty gold Shimano SX's

also repainted the fork lifter stem i got with the bars, just waiting for a new decal and its ready for fitment smile

Re: New project RICKMAN FREESTYLER

Totally digging this build. Keeping with the raw finish and adding the gold components was definitely the way to go on this.

Keep the photos coming on this one. Can't wait to see it completed.
