Dark Side Era

After a rant, and fielding the ensuing backlash, in a new school bike thread. Things as preposterous as not understanding that BMX is a sport, being closed minded, and being a bike hater was thrown in my face. 100% misunderstandings. Though, I did say some caustic things about the Goth/Emo/Grunge skinny jean wearing riders I see moping around the city bike shop, not all of what I got was unfounded. tongue  This blog, is about bike cataloging. Right? The last time I checked there was no mechanism (other than the forums) here to log and track events, tricks (old or new) or celebrate new and old BMX athletes. It's about BIKES. If it is not then fine. Stop reading. Because I am talking about the machine, not the sport, not the rider, not the tricks. I am talking about a bike.

There is a new trend. A paradigm shift.
A 2003 GT that I posted in a New School Thread, was flamed as not qualifying as new school. Due to a 33T sprocket and rear drop outs that were a whopping, 62mm long. (2.5 inches). And had a final weight with 4 cromo pegs of 30 lbs. Something I thought was AWESOME!

But "how is this?" you say. New School is 2000 to present. WRONG. Only wrong because not up to the present.

I am proposing an era of bikes called "Dark School".  It is the current crop of bmx bikes being sold since in and around 2009. You know the ones,  They look like the same bike with different paint and decals. Yet are ferociously defended as unique for their subtle weight differences and geometry. Things that could only be measured in 10ths of degrees, grams of weight, and millimeters of lengths. I am not hating on these bikes. I own a couple. But I also don't have broken eyes, and can swing a ruler, protractor and scale.  If it quacks it's a duck people. The red image below is not a Photoshop trick. It is 5 bikes, from 5 different companies all staked on top of themselves. I used the bottom of the steer tube to register and each bike is set to 20% opacity.  Hard to defend that once built into riders with the same bars and forks, they are nothing more different than a Toyota Matrix and a Pontiac Vibe.

http://www.hyper-activemedia.com/fright … e_Exam.jpg

So... the cusp. I argue 2008 was the last definitive year for New School.
here is an example of an era change.

http://www.hyper-activemedia.com/frightpics/image2.jpg

The 2008 Kink Gap. It has a 13t freewheel, a 33t sprocket, and un-tapered forks. 26.75 lbs. (with out pegs)  Making it "disqualified" as a new school ride according to the "authorities" in the "dark side new school" thread. On the plus side, the bike is 100% Chromoly.

http://www.hyper-activemedia.com/frightpics/image3.jpg
The 2009 Kink Gap. Undeniably Dark School.  9t rear driver, 25t front sprocket. tapered forks, and about 1.25 lbs LESS steel (99% from thinner side walled tubing) because it has 99.9% the same geometry. and the 2009 has a mix of hiten steel as well as chromo.  So much for hiten being heavier- yes it's a myth. look it up. (remember when that was called tri-moly?)  That geometry being 75deg steer tube, 71 deg seat tube, and 20.5" TT.

So, if one is new school, and the other is not.  The one that is NOT is the 2009 Gap.  Because new school era bikes are any bike after the end of mid school- 2000 and later.  I argue that mid ended when Dyno died in 2001. But that's another thread.

The logic is simple.
If a there is a requirement out there,  a spec that is used to discern what is a modern bike, it is NOT what is generally considered era accurate for preexisting New School bikes that are WAY more prolific. Since 2000-2008 is a markedly longer period than than last 3 years, and already in an era class called "New School"-  the 2009 and present era is NOT new school any longer.

I propose Dark School. It has been referred to as "the dark side" or crossing over to the "dark side" of bmx when older riders start riding them.  I think that is a very accurate monicker. Or at least another Star Wars reference is in order. Attack of the Clones. smile

Re: Dark Side Era

DansComp takes GREAT photos of their stock. They must put the frames and camera on a rig that never moves. They are all set at the same angle.  making it easier to stack images.  It helps that I randomly picked red frames though.

the only "Photoshop" that was done was the layers and the opacity to do the image overlays. I can gladly send the Photoshop file off for anyone to confirm the validity of the work.

This thread fails on merely mentioning Star Wars and " Attack Of The Clones "in the same sentence  . Episode IV , Episode V , Episode VI , A New Hope , The Empire Strikes Back or Return Of The Jedi are the only acceptable responses when mentioning any Star Wars movies .

Re: Dark Side Era

It's stupid to only use three eras for BMX, are bikes made in
2025 going to be the same era as todays New school?
We should figure out a new way of refering to Eras other then The 3 Schools.
Its already a pain in the ass, and will only get worse with time.

Which is why I propose a new era name. IDK what its called. But we are in new era. Or we have to rename the pre-exisiting New School Era. It would be easy to go by decades, but the trends don't work like that.

Re: Dark Side Era

Is it just me or is this A LOT of energy on details that really don't matter. I mean seriously, if it has 2 wheels and is powered with your legs, I say call it BMX as long as it falls in the appropriate catagory. Mountain bikes and road bike are what they are. Street/flatland/vert-ramp/racing seems to just about cover everything. If you like old redlines and enjoy riding, so be it. If you like mid 90's, so be it. If you like modern era stuff like integrated head tubes, good for you. Ride, ride, ride, enjoy and share with friends and family by making memories. If you enjoy the build on the way, that's a plus. Clever overlays and geo spec comparrisons are not needed. How about forgetting era's, specs, geometry, paint schemes and whatever minute detail is being fought over and ride what makes you happy without needing others to agree with you.  Maybe at 41 years old, I'm just old school and self confidence comes from what I've done in my life, not how many people agree with me. All these threads that split hairs trying to get everyone on board to share unimportant views like this doesn't come off as anything but a person who needs affirmation from strangers to feel complete. We used to call them pussies.........its hard enought to just get people to stop worring about how many they can get in the shortest period of time, let alone ride them without pooping their little panties from fear of a scratch on their prized frames.........

Re: Dark Side Era

My ganja loving brother from another mother,

A lot of energy goes into collections of 10+ bikes and 100s of posts, 1000s of photos, sales, and time spent part hunting refurbishing, designing... etc. To say that talking about it,. and defining what we do doesn't matter is... well it's not cool bro.

again-  i'm (we're) not talking about riding, tracks, parks, sports, or athletes. talking about bikes. none of what you say is in question. and has already been covered by the intro to my post. this is about a machine. not an activity. Just like if this were a car blog. it would be about "cars",. not "driving".  I know a lot of mechanics that can't bunny hop more than 5" off the ground. I know even more riders that can't lace a wheel.  But none of that is in question. capice?

Maybe generally.....but I'm the exception to that general rule. So you guys hammer out the details and come up with a final decision on what's what.....makes no difference to me, but knock yourselves out! big_smile

right? i had no idea it would be that close until i did it. I actually was out to prove to myself that it's all in my head.  I have too much love for the Haro Freestyler and GT Performer line of bikes, so it must be my eyes fooling me.

I have said before they all look alike as a thief defense mechanism. The crooks don't know which one to steal!

Whats with all the emoticons? Are you laughing at yourself?  Laughing at me? What does that mean?

Panties in my ass?  really? Come on man.  When did we need to personally attack people, as opposed to just keep it about the bikes? How about, if you don't share my opinion, tell me why.  And if the sole reason you don't, is that your main focus is the sport, or riding,.. then guess what? There are places for you!  It's called outside. You can go there. There are blogs and forums for that too.  You should start one. Maybe call it "I am tough. Nychus is not. He has panties on. My opinion is as broad and is as vague as possible, so that anyone who wants to talk about something specific, can be flamed for wasting time talking instead of out riding."

Really you should start that thread. I foresee 10,000 replies by this time tomorrow.

Stoner71 wrote:

Important enough for you to comment,.... that it is not important. Do you see what did there? You know this is a form of "social media" right?   This is 100% loaded and installed so that people with like opinions can share them with people with similar tastes. And sharing your opinion sometimes causes conflict. It also resolves things. But claiming no opinion or one so generally accepted, is not a free ticket to slam people on a personal level, nor claim higher ground. It is actually like bragging about being neutral, and last time I checked, that ain't a brag.

I started this to bring an open discussion to a modern trend, and it is a conflict that I did not manufacture.  I actually hope to resolve it and move on. So I can get my head right.  It needs to be addressed because it is not a conversation unique to this thread, this whole website and others out there in the genre.  But this is the best BMX bike forum, so you'd think people could be mature enough to talk about it, and reasonable enough to refrain from replying if they aren't on the side of resolution. NOT TALKING ABOUT IT IS NOT THE SAME AS RESOLUTION.  Other people have stated that it needs to be addressed, and it will get worse if not hammered out.

Please send personal direct attacks as PMs so I can properly parry and reposte.

Re: Dark Side Era

Lil buddy? That's funny.........why do I care even though I post about something I don't care about.........simple, not because I care, you can come up with whatever terminilogy you want and have 100 others who agree, I still don't care. What I posted was not because I care about the discussion itself as a museum member. Nor do I care about any census or majority to clarify terms for eras. I posted as a person sitting on the outside letting others who care on the inside know that there is no point. Terms and titles are relevant. Simply put, if I were 1 of 100 people on this site who slugged this out and found myself to be the lone person who didn't agree, there would be nothing anyone could do about it. You could fly out to my home, stand face to face and tell me that the majority made a choice and I would say F-You.........you could call me names, make threats or even take a swing at me, it still would not matter, so with this being said, a sane person does have to ask what's the point? That's where my post comes in.........it does no matter what you think, it does not matter if everyone agrees with you either. As long as 1 or more people call 2005 new school, any thread dedicated to new terms like dark era are nothing more than time killing circle jerks. I mean I honestly don't care if my bikes are new, old, mid or dark side era, nobody will ever make me care. If I say they are old school because they are last years model, there's not much anyone can do about that. So with that being said, I will ask 1 question. If this discussion has absolutely no hope of uniting 100% of the members, what's the point? Its no different than hutch sucks, american made is better than everything else, new school vs old school........its just pointless bantering.........
