It's Back from C4 Labs!

I finally got off my butt and got my one owner 1987 GT Performer powder coated.  I still have to finish restoring the mags and figure out something with the seat.

As you can see, the bike isn't all original and it never will be.  I bought the GT mallet stem, Dyno bars, Epoch headset, Odyssey RX-3 levers, and Dia-Compe Bulldog brake back in the 80's when the bike was still fairly new.  My original seat post was bent and I wanted a Dyno Drainpipe back in the day so I bought one lately.  I've purchased the other goodies within the last few years.  I was going to have 990 mounts welded on (that's why the powdered 990 is in the picture), but decided to get a Dia-Compe centerpull from Chip when he gets one in stock.

Re: It's Back from C4 Labs!

I've already started assembly.  I am going to start wire wheeling nuts and bolts when I get home from work tomorrow.  Maybe I'll work up the nerve to place the decals.

Anybody have any tips on freshening up a set of "yellowed" white brake pads?  What can I do to my seat other than dye it to make it look new?

I saw a post by whitebread where he put his white plastic pedals in some hydrogen peroxide and set them in the sun to whiten them. Don't know if it would work on brake pads though.

Re: It's Back from C4 Labs!

More pictures.  I'm soaking the seat in degreaser.  It is absolutely nasty.  I am going to sand a few spots and clean it up for spray dye.  I'm working on removing brake rub from my rear mag and I'm still trying to get that purple paint/dye off of the front mag.

Re: It's Back from C4 Labs!

One of the bearing cups died back around 1990.  I had to replace the mag.  The local bike shop was unable to locate a 1987 mag, so I settled for a set of the newer mags.  I bought the purple one off Ebay around 2001 or 2002 thinking it would be easy to remove the paint (dye?).  Wrong!!  I tried chemical paint stripper with no luck at all.  It might have softened the paint some.

The brake rub was much easier to get off the front (purple) mag.  It has been really tough for the rear one.  I've been soaking parts of the front mag in Pinesol to get the paint/dye off of it.  I need to find a container large enough to submerge the mag in.  I think I may dye the mags rather than bleaching them.

Re: It's Back from C4 Labs!

I've been working on the brake cables today.  Bleach made my brake pads white again.  I also cut the chain to the correct length.  This thing is going together pretty fast.

Part of me wants to go ahead and put the decals on.  I've always wanted to see what the bike would look like completed without the decals, so I'm trying to resist the urge.

Re: It's Back from C4 Labs!

Did you try citrus stripper?? I used it on a set of mags that were spray painted white and it worked awesome. Let it set up and blasted them with a power washer and it all flew right off.

Side note:  Skinwall freestyle tires please big_smile

I used aircraft stripper.  I'll see if I can find some citrus stripper.

Where in the world would I get a pair?  I guess used is the only option.

I've been working on my pegs.  I mounted the one on the left in my drill press and held some sandpaper against it.  It looked like the one on the right when I started.  I wire wheeled the steel pegs.  I'm going to mount them in the drill press too and steel wool the insides.

Re: It's Back from C4 Labs!

Use a bottle of soap water to spray on back of stickers and frame . Just a few drops per bottle is plenty. Then you can slide them around til your happy with placement. Works like a champ

I stripped black paint off of white 1987 GT mags. I used Easy Off oven cleaner. It worked  great and did not harm the plastic.

Re: It's Back from C4 Labs!

Love the before and after shots. This bike is already sweet and only going to get better.

Resist the urge!!! The stickers are going to make it look great, but you'll never have the chance to see it all "ghost white" if you apply them.

Shoot some photos, then apply the stickers.

I am trying that as we speak.  Thanks for the tip.
