Re: New Project: 1989 Mongoose Mightygoose

Red grips and mityoose decals ordered from bmx products today. Hope to have the frame stripped and polished by the end of the day on Saturday. Bars should be painted by then too.

I'm being kinda picky the more I look into this, I'm on the hunt for another black aero bmx seat. I have some stuff for a possible trade if you have a decent one that you'd be wiling to part with. Pm if interested. Thanks!

The website is bmxproducts.com. They are a authorized retailer for restoration decals for alot of mongoose and some gt decal sets. They also have mongoose grips as well a few other things. I've felt with them before, no complaints at all

Re: New Project: 1989 Mongoose Mightygoose

Im also toying around with the thought of making a bracket to bolt on behind the seat tube to allow the use of caliper brakes. I am about 99.9% sure it can be done without adverse affects to the frame.  cool

This weekend is going to be fun

I was thinking about what to do too. I have red brakes but didn't want to drill a hole in the frame. Let me know what you come up with.

Ok so I'm spit-balling here..  If, in theory, one had a two part bracket similar to the old school seat clamps, with a bolt recessed on one of the clamp halves to prevent it from touching the frame, It would mount to the tube off the back of the seat tube in the "normal" spot for a caliper. Should have enough room for adjustment along the tube and further adjustment with the brake pads themselves...

Hmm. That back tube is kinda flat and oval. A round clamp would leave a lot of space between the two.

Can't wait to see what you do. Still on the fence about drilling a hole. tongue

I'd hate to drill a hole. I think I'd use the coaster brake before I drilled anything. That short tube behind the seat tube (where your pork chop decal is) appears to start round and taper off. I missed that initially. I think that I'm going to need to get my wheels done before I can add brakes.

I did however find something cool last night but not sure if it's made for the size tubing I'd need. It's a v brake mount kit. It uses the same type of alum clamp as mentioned above but has a stud mount for a v brake. Thought this was a cool option.

Either way, my goal is to not have to drill or use coaster brakes.

Bars are going to powder today and paint should be off the frame by sat am

Re: New Project: 1989 Mongoose Mightygoose

So started stripping the frame and it did not turn out well at all. I used a gel stripper from the big box home store and it did not work. I followed the directions to a T and it was not strong enough.  I was able to get some it of but not anywhere near what would be anything less than a 12-18hr min project.

I did get the forks cleaned up and the chrome under the paint kinda sucks. Its paper thin and far from what id be happy with. I'm taking the frame fork and bard to a friend of mine tomorrow with alot more equip than I have at home and well see what we can come up with.

I think, more than likely, its gonna get sandblasted and painted gloss white or gloss silver with black bars. I'm kinda leaning on white.

Something else Ive been kicking around in my head is a frame mod that I'm sure to catch hell for. I found these http://www.cycle-frames.com/bicycle-fra … mm-SL.html. They look very similar to the mounts on my flight pro. I am tossing around the idea of braising v brakes bosses on this bad boy. I know Ill catch hell for it, especially after stressing about drilling a hole for caliper brakes, but I think it would be cool if done properly.

Well see what tomorrow brings. cool

I used a stipper called zip strip...it works kicks @ss, takes off powercoat too...its realy harsh, but it didnt hurt the chrome eather, just thought Id pass on the info

Re: New Project: 1989 Mongoose Mightygoose

Lots of progress today. Frame/Forks are in the raw big_smile. Wound up using fine glass bead to take the paint off.  I ordered up the 8mm v brake studs and bosses for the new brakes and will hopefully have them on and the frame/fork and powder coated within the next couple of weeks. wink I think I'm going with a light gloss silver on the frame and fork but haven't ruled out white tho, and the bars will be black

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e354/MattMan26443/BMX/IMG_1824.jpg

Mailman came with the first round of goodies from BMX Products.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e354/MattMan26443/BMX/IMG_1826.jpg

Next on the block is polishing a black SR-422 Stem.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e354/MattMan26443/BMX/IMG_1825.jpg

Im also going to do something cool for the wheels on this thing. There are cheap alloy wheels on amazon that I think would make a great candidate for disassembly and drilling to resemble these bad boys
