1978 Peugeot CPX-500
1978 Peugeot CPX-500
The Only One I've Ever Seen!
This frame is an aluminum alloy looptail Peugeot CPX-500. Many companies had contracts with Race Inc. including FMF, Laguna, Cycle Pro and even a few European companies, who were getting involved with BMX at the time, like Raleigh/Rampar and yes, Peugeot.
The frame was most likely welded by Bill Bastian at Race Inc. According to Brian Hays (scientific expert on Race Inc.) the frame was probably built in '78/'79 and is the only one he has ever seen sporting original decals. Brian also recalls an ad offering these frames, sold as a frame only, never offered as a complete bike.
Considering the serial # (500500), I would venture to say that it may be the first Race Inc built Peugeot CPX-500 ever made but I also have to wonder how many of these frames were ever made for Peugot? I'm not sure if I will try to build this up with matching faded red anodized parts or not. Hays told me that if I tried to re-anodize it, he would kill me, so I promised not to touch the original finish and decals.
**update**
I have come across another CPX-500 which has the bi-secting weld on the "floval" tube, which would actually pre-date this frame, meaning this could be a later prototype version or something. The recently discovered frame is exactly like the frame in the flyer.
Flyer photo courtesy of Daryl Larson (thank you). I now have this flyer in my possesion.

Super cool .... and just as rare ... Aluminum frame was not that common at all back then either !
I collect/hoard/fix/buy/sell BMX bikes , vintage road bikes , cruisers , mtb , bikes in general ....
Also do the same with old school chevys and classic cars/trucks

Re: 1978 Peugeot CPX-500
I wondered who ended up with that. I bid on it out to about 250.00 and bowed out. Very nice grab though. I'm not one normally for sticking frames in display/shadow boxes BUT I think in this case I would probably try to find a semi matching fork and shadow box this one.

Leave it alone.

When you compute the length of time between the "EVENT" and "THE NOSTALGIA FOR THE EVENT", the span seems to be about a year less in every cycle.
Eventually the nostalgia cycles will be so close together that people will not be able to take a step without being nostalgic for the one they just took.
At that point, everything stops. DEATH BY NOSTALGIA. Frank Zappa

Re: 1978 Peugeot CPX-500
Glad to see someone in the museum won it and put it in the bike list ! You out bid me on it as I wanted it for my Peugeot collection and to make sure it wouldn't get lost and forgotten about. Please keep us updated as you find information about it. I did a lot of research on it while the auction was going on. The fonts in the decals are correct but I’ve never seen Peugeot BMX decals like those. It would be amazing if someone found some paper work for it out there or at Race Inc. I couldn't find any catalog references for this bike but it's very possible Race Inc built it for Peugeot in a bidding war with other contractors and Peugeot took the business somewhere else for whatever reason. It's completely possible this was the only one ever produced.

Coast Wheels (CW) had a blue and gold CPX500 on a stand when you walked in the door. They were my sponsor shop and I drooled every time I went in for tune up's or to pick parts up.
I have an original blue with chrome non-leading edge forks that I plan to make into the display bike.

I handle sales and marketing at True Torch. We have almost 40 years experience fabricating BMX bikes. We do custom builds and repairs but our overhead is not paid via BMX. We wish it were but the mundane welding and fabricating jobs must come first.
Personally, I'm a total Peddlepower and early Powerlite junkie. Always looking for '83 and older Peddlepower and Powerlite parts. I need 24" & 26" Powerlite forks.

Re: 1978 Peugeot CPX-500
I believe your frame is a 1977 . I say this because in the Boys Life Magazine September 1977 page 26-27 there is a full page shot of a FMF rider and the frame is the same also I own the same frame and I have the Peugeot bars witht the orriginal dealer brochure on the CPX - 500 . I looked at all the fine print and there is no date on it anywere . It looks like the CPX-500 also came im anodized gold . It also Has the CPX-300 that is a steel MX frame that was in red or blue

I'm kind of waiting on you to measure the decals for me so I can get them going before building what will be a 17th bike in my 2-1/2 car garage that still hold 2 cars. PLEASE!

Is that the picture of the brochure above in Ron's profile of the bike or is there something more also?
Sweet brochure dude.

Moelo, the frame in that Boys Life shot is a '76 FMF Pro. Although there are similarities to this frame to the naked eye, there are many differences as well. Note the oval hole on front gusset, the bisecting weld on bottom oval (floval) tube and the abscence of a brake bridge on that FMF. For these reasons, I believe my CPX-500 to be slightly later. The oval (or floval) tube is one piece on my CPX-500, which based on what I've read, the tooling to make this in one peice (no welding) started in '78.
"When FMF was in the BMX business, the lug was formed by a rolled section of flat stock that weled to form a "floval" shaped tube."
"When SE Racing brought out a line of frames, that lug was made from a section of seamless floval tubing. Floval aluminum tubing didn't exist in BMX until SE Racing because it was SE that paid Alcoa to create tooling ot create the floval tubing". -Bill
"SE started offering frames in mid 78, I believe". -Brian Hayes
So simply put, bisecting weld = '76-'77, no bisecting weld = '78+![]()
