1976 CYC Stormer project

Got this from Ebay. Total project, but should restore ok I think. I have some '75 dated Ashtabula forks I will be putting on it, otherwise everything will be cleaned and restored as you see it. Sucks because it showed up on the day I had surgery and I cant do much with it yet. sad Its killing me. I may do a little cleanup on Friday and will post pics as I get it rebuilt. big_smile

Check out the head tube decal hiding under the paint!

Haven't seen a serial yet, but it may be hiding under some dirt or paint. I will keep posting this bike as it gets cleaned up.

Re: 1976 CYC Stormer project

This is the earliest design I know of. Supposed to be the same as an AAA rascal, but I have never seen one labeled as such. Its a guessing game with CYC though, as soon as you think you have them figured out, another one pops up with odd features you have not seen before. Love the huge loops with the banana seat mounts personally.

Got it apart to see what there is to work with. Pretty rough, but some nickel finish still there.

Re: 1976 CYC Stormer project

True first gen Tuffs with Bendix 70 coaster brake. Too cool. The wheels are probably OG to the bike being this old. Cranks are bent, so they will be replaced with some Takagi MX cranks which are era correct.

Those 1st gen Tuffs are stupid rare.  Very few sets still known to exist.  They should clean up real nicely.  Their made from a different material than other later Tuffs and are much easier to clean.  Congrats on a truly great purchase smile

Re: 1976 CYC Stormer project

Yep . Those patent pending tuff 1s are pretty rare . I have seen em go for cheap on here because a lot of people do not know what they are . I had a really clean set i sold as I am not a tuff wheel guy . And the dudes who knew what they were  went nuts for them .

If I can find a correct looking seat I might. Just have a nice old Mesinger bmx seat I will be using for now.

Re: 1976 CYC Stormer project

Got a few things done today. Cleaned the wheels/tires, rebuilt rear axle, cleaned and polished crankset, and rattlecanned the pedals. Thats enough for today! lollol Wheels still need a little detailing.

I think you are right about different material. They seem to have a little "sparkle" in the black. Another set of tuff I's I have do not look the same. learn something new everyday! smile

Re: 1976 CYC Stormer project

Forks stripped and etch primed, paint removed from the frame, but doesn't look much better. Going to get a tub and some vinegar and do a 48hr soak on this one. I know a lot will come off, but I dont have high hopes for a good finish to polish out. hmm
