Re: One off set of SLAMS, per NbL 48a

I made a mistake based on information I had gathered.  That's it.  I am the last person on here that would lie about a part.  I went into this not being sure, so my error was in the title I chose.  I was pretty stoked at that moment and mistakenly exaggerated.  Once I knew they were not earliest I asked to have MY thread re-titled.  I would appreciate it if the title would be changed to what I actually asked for.  Anyway, the thread is still good even if certain people can't be cool.  What's funny is that I have never had a problem with NbL49a but for some reason he is trashing my threads on two sites.  It's just whatever.  Unnecessary.

FYI- perhaps one-off is not the exact correct term but I only used that term to describe their uniqueness.  Not to claim they are the only set.  If anything they are from a one-off batch.  We established that they were GT made.  We also established that the very first run of Slams was done by CW.  We have only seen a few examples of GT made Slams so far and none of them look like mine.  I don't know what that means.  Maybe absolutely nothing and the truth is, I'm not going to sell them so what's the difference? It was just a fun research project that somehow got all serious.  I accept responsibility for what I write on this site and will always do so.  If I'm wrong, I admit it.  There was no right or wrong here.  It's interesting stuff and it's cool that we all learned something.  Let's focus on that instead of negatives.

Re: One off set of SLAMS, per NbL 48a

I think the following PM to Benny sums up everything here:

"I do not have a problem with you personally and that is not where my comments have stemmed from. My comments stem from you making claims that are based on a theory you have researched to whatever degree but they (the claims) were not confirmed and you presented it as fact then later edited them. When I said something on here you then saw the need to change the title on the post. However when it was renamed I am not sure if you wanted my name in the post or not but that and the fact your s are not one offs is yet again you going off in another direction with your claims. If my name being added was a Mod trying to stem up drama then that is what it is. (From my conversations with Benny it is just that)

I am not making any claims that you are a liar but I think you should truly confirm things before making claims. I am not saying it was intentional and whether you agree with it or not your posts before they were edited, do show a pattern. You have done a great job in cleaning stuff up so I truly feel it was an honest mistake. Sorry if you took what I posted as a personal attack but that was not my intentions."

In closing Benny ultimately agreed that "one-off" is also not correct by definition as these are truly unique bars. Despite others prior feelings I have never discredited the value of these bars nor their uniqueness and over time more on their history may come to light.

Re: One off set of SLAMS, per NbL 48a

Thanks, Stephen.  I was a newb to proclaim I had something before I knew what it was for sure.  We all learn the hard part of this hobby the hard way. I hope this thread keeps going because it will most likely yield more awesome examples.  I still want to know what I have.  I have narrowed it to GT made Slam bars with a knurling that was not the norm.   At this point , I am looking for any like examples.  I really want this thread to go in that direction.  I know you can dig that.  Post 'em up, MFers!

I think all of this is simply a result of one day in 1989 the knurling guy got just a little bit too high big_smileneutral

I went to S&M a couple of months ago.  Chris and I actually talked about how special the modern knurling is on Slam Bars made today.  The knurler is a machine that must be set up to produce a certain pattern.  My bars were knurled on purpose.  Basically, it's not possible for a person to affect the process once it has been set up.  The set up is the question.  GT bars from this period look similar in their knurling but still not like any GT made Slam bars I have seen before.
