Scrap Yard build of a classic GT

My kids and I Found this frame and fork at the scrap yard. Cost us $5 bucks!
The serial said its a 1989, and has the Japan factory code, but has made in Taiwan stickers. Its SUPER light weight frame, though.

Re: Scrap Yard build of a classic GT

An older guy that works at the glass shop across from my house had a bunch of old parts and junk "Laying out at his house from when he used to race pro BMX and was sponsored by GT" WOW!! SO he brought me a bunch of parts! Between what he gave me and my own stash I cam up with about everything! some GT mohawk hubs and rims, a quick change sprocket, some black chrome dia-compe brakes and a GT seat post clamp and an old 'drain pipe' seat post!

Re: Scrap Yard build of a classic GT

This is the final product! Turned out to be a very fast and balanced bike, not to mention the black and chrome looks killer!

you should have seen my 45 year old buddy reliving his youth on it after we got it all together!

Re: Scrap Yard build of a classic GT

Im not too familiar with the cranks. I though this was a 3 piece crank, but a 3 piece crank is the crank its self, not the chain ring. what is the quick change chain ring called? I found another one, but with redline chromoly crank set and redline sprocket today at the yard!

The cranks are 1 piece,I don't think the removable chainring has a special name. and nice find, I wish I had a scrapyard near me, there is a few but they rarely get bikes

Re: Scrap Yard build of a classic GT

mine gets just truck loads of bicycles every day! plus walmart throws the bikes here. brand new bikes that are assembled wrong. I have tons of new tires, wheels, chains, brakes, etc.... Its kind of nice when I find an oldschool REDLINE, GT or Diamondback or whatever frame, throw a brand new set of rollers, brakes, grips on it and ride it!

Re: Scrap Yard build of a classic GT

That is a sweet job you did turning some scrap bike parts into a rider. The scrap yards here won't sell bikes once they are bought and will chase you off if you wait at the entrance and try buying them from people coming in.Really sucks cuz I know there are some kileer bikes that go in there from time to time.

Re: Scrap Yard build of a classic GT

Nice grab! Love the "road hazzard" decal models...actually from 90. That is a 90 vertigo. Just manufactured a little early. Funny you mention the Japan serial and tawain stickers. Noticed that on some 90 models and wondering whats up with that. I have a 90 "road hazzard" performer (also a late 89 build) and it doesn't have those Tawain stickers but maybe they were tken off. The serial is Japan though and the fork is even stamped by a Japan company but don't remember the name. I thinking maybe the frames were Japan made but everything else was Tawain so they were forced to use those stickers. Also it might just be a mistake by the bike dealers since they did make them in both places it seems.

By what I understand GT started having some quality issues with the Tiawan plant and they contracted to a high quality Jap factory while they went to Taiwan and kicked some ass to get them to up their quality.

I just found an early 90's Redline and its got  a bunch of 90's stickers all over it.  Im bummed becasue there are a couple stickers that someone had removed. Its a time capsule for sure!

He is a SMART kid. My son and Daughter really are my life. I wake up every morning thinking what I can do to make their life a better one.

Frontier days is going on here in Cheyenne (if you never heard of it GOOGLE IT!)
there is a Marines booth with a pull up bar and all the dumbass cowboys were there trying to do pullups. Even the marine could only bang out 6 good solid pullups. So my 6 year old son wants to try and a 20 something cowboy was saying kids couldn do it with a 2 inch diameter arm, so I made him a side bet of a 6 pack (at the park thats 5.50 a beer!) Just previos to that like 10 kids went through from like 3rd grade to 6th grade age and not one of them could even do one pull up. even a strong looking little guy could barely pull one off.....
So tyler goes up there, and just straight bangs out 18 pullups then I think he got bored and jumped down, and said.. "thats enough for now, dad. Ill go do more in a min"
LOL!
Even the Marines had to pick his jaw up off the ground! The marine dug and dug for all his free stuff, and gave Tyler a PILE of stuff, a leather jacket that would fit me, some kids fatigues with marine patches, a cooler, a cup, pretty much every cool freebie he could get! LOL!
Then before we left, Tylers like.. I want to do 10 more and he jumps himself up there and does 10 more like a walk in the park.
He is 6 years old and a high green belt in tae kwon do. Multiple first place trophies for tournaments and stuff..... Hes an awesome kid!

Grandma was here lastnght and she was joking about him getting a job. He just laughs and says..you dont need a job, you just need to be smart, and find somehting cheap then sell it for more money. then take some of that money and buy something else cheap. (this is a 6 year old kindergartener!) he will be succesfull in life!
