Department Store Build Off - 2012 discussion thread
****** CRUISER CLASS ADDED - ENTRY DEADLINE IS AUGUST 26,2012 @ MIDNIGHT EST. ****** YOU MUST HAVE A BEFORE PHOTO SUBMITTED PRIOR TO THE DEADLINE TO QUALIFY FOR THE BUILDOFF!!!! HURRY UP AND GET THEM SUBMITTED!!!!!
Don't laugh, I'm actually serious about this! ![]()
Ok, now we all have either owned or known someone whose whip was a cheap 'lol department store bike. Let's face it, not everyone was fortunate enough to be handed a high dollar bike. Love 'em or hate them, they are a part of our BMX heritage.
Since this is the museum, I would like to see some of these bikes saved. This is to be a fun, lowbuck build where the average guy can afford to build a correct competitive bike. Since these are department store bikes, the use of high end parts will actually hurt your build.
Rules:
1)Must be a pre-88 department store f/f. This means no bike shop bikes.
2)bikes must be era correct. New tires, etc are ok just no Retro tires. Porkchop Comp ST or Comp 3 copies are fine.
3)must be built for this buildoff and at least one item must be bought from the museum .
4)Entries must be submitted on or before midnight EST on Sunday August 26,2012. PHOTO SUBMISSION THREAD LOCATED HERE: http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.p … 0#p3712680
There are three classes: Cruiser, Race or Freestyle.
5)you will have an 8 week window to complete your entry/entries ending on midnight EST Sunday October 21,2012. A completed entry thread will be posted on August 26,2012. Photo submission is per museum standards ie. Full bike sprocket side shot will be your 1st photo, your last photo will be a picture of the bike actually being rode. This is very important since no bike is complete unless it is ridable. No carpet queens allowed!!! At the conclusion of the completed submission part, there will be a 1 week peer voting period where your fellow members pick their favorites. There will be awards for 1st thru 3rd plus a special award that I will award to my favorite from each class.
Now get that Kent, Huffy, Murray or any other dept store bike out and put it to use!
**** Multiple entries are limited to 2 bikes per class ****

Re: Department Store Build Off - 2012 discussion thread
You missed that first part there. Rule 3 states it "Must be built for this build off"
These bikes have been finished since 2010 as complete NOS survivors, so technically you didn't build anything, and even so they weren't built for this "build off". Which renders both entries as disqualified...
The whole point of a build off is to start with nothing and turn it into something. These are VERY nice bikes but it wouldn't be much of a "Build off" if everybody could just post already completed projects.

Exactly, that's why alexanderrw's bikes, as nice as they are, do not fit the criteria for a "build off"

That thing has become an albatross. I put it on CL for cheap and the only email I got was from someone confirming they did come with spokes or mags, not just mags.
I'll rip it apart, clean the hell out of it, give it fresh grease and order some new wheels or tires then put it back together. Maybe stop storing it out on my patio, too.

Sorry man, although you're bikes are stunning they don't fit the criteria for the build. Hopefully at the end, there will be a few more in the condition of your bikes,.

I don't have the time to enter this, but if anyone wants to buy this for a real good deal for this buildoff, let me know. You can't get anymore department store than an SCS. The cool thing is, there are not too many of these floating around.
