Who started the new school flatland freestyle?
Last night I was watching some 80s era freestyle and comparing it to the new stuff. I agree the new stuff is just freaking amazing, as cool as the old stuff was it pales in comparison to present day....with one exception. Dennis McCoy....I think he is the father of modern flatland freestyle, the guy was simply amazing the speed and linked tricks he did, all while in constant motion, even today its incredible, and I was reminded of this by this video, circa 1988:

Kevin Jones is the father of modern flatland. McCoy is doing stuff Kevin was creating.

i'm not a KJ expert at all but i have to ask a few questions.
1) what tricks (up to 88 - since both videos are from then) was KJ credited with creating?
2) if that's the same comp where did they both place?
Edit:
round 3
Pro flatland: 1.Dennis McCoy
Finals
Pro flat:
1.Rick Moliterno
2.Dennis McCoy
3. Dennis Langlais
4.Woody Itson
5.Eddie Fiola

I like Dennis McCoy so I'm not going to pit one vs the other. But ask any flat rider and they all bring up Kevin Jones.

oh don't get me wrong. would NEVER try to take anything away from KJ. he's HUGE no doubt, especially in the 90s. i was just going by "88"
DMC was unstoppable 87-88 (IMHO) ![]()

Re: Who started the new school flatland freestyle?
To me the transition that occurred in the late 80's that inspired modern flatland:
-brakeless riding
-the fluid rolling tricks getting linked into each other
-the slow disappearance of "static" show boating tricks
-the gradual disappearance of "ride around" transitions; transitions moved into linking 4+ more tricks together
IMHO, Kevin Jones was to flatland what Matt Hoffman was to ramp riding, but without all the glory.
Dennis McCoy was a master of taking bits and pieces of what was already going on, throw in a new trick, and linking em all together. I'm not taking anything away from McCoy he was a consummate professional at what he did. He was fast, fluid, and awesome to watch.
In contests, Kevin Jones would simply roll and transition into move after move with tricks no one had seen before. Everyone would stop, pros included, to come and watch him ride. It was an exciting time.
Rangers lead the way!

Kevin Jones and the Plywood Hoods started all that. I remember when he started showing up in the magazines riding a beat up green Haro master. I think it was in 1987.

Re: Who started the new school flatland freestyle?
McCoy may of been a pro in 88, but the expert class guys were taking away the show.. Kevin Jones, Perry Mervar, etc, all just weren't pros at the time...
I'm sorry I don't kiss a$$.

Jones:
As awesome as McCoy was/is, KJ is the godfather of modern flatland. Virtually every trick done today is some version of a trick KJ invented.
As far as McCoy's speed, he was pretty fast but Chris Day was the king of speed BITD. He was never as polished as DMC, and never did well in contests, but the might not have been anyone better in a jam circle in 1987.

Re: Who started the new school flatland freestyle?
I agree it was Kevin, and I bet if you asked DMC, he'd probably say the same thing. Kevin was inventing things that made it to magazines in other's names for years before he made a name for himself. Half of what Gary Pollack got known for came directly from Kevin and the rest of the Hoods. And yeah, there were other guys there who were almost as good. Almost. Chase was ridiculous. Huddleston was pretty good too.
I like the analogy that KJ was to flatland what Hoffman was to ramps. DMC was the best all around rider in that era, though. By light years.
I thrashed your grail, and I loved every second of it.

Mr. Jones and me...
You know, Roy Munson has two chances to win this tournament now...slim and none...and slim may have just left town.
