HOOPS:worked out a trade for some hubs and brake parts to draw.
SPOKES NIPPLES:reused from a set of wheels i got from azbadman
STEM:got this from wolfgang on a cash/trade deal for a framset.
TIRES:nos from beta section, took them for a ride after the photos.
PEDALS:forsale section
CAGES:from troyandlori.

suede seats and cw cruiser bars are pricey at best, so i made my own, and did alot of hoarse trading and waiting for the right parts to come up at the right price.
a big thanks to everyone i got these parts from, even if its been so long i forgot where they came from.
and thankyou to wife and daughter for putting up with my bmx nonsense!!

Re: 2012 SUMMER BUILD OFF SUBMISSION THREAD
1985 Hutch Hollywood
My original concept here was to build one of my childhood "dream bikes", using parts in the best possible condition. After building it with some reproduction parts, I decided that using old school parts was more important to me, so I replaced the "repro" parts and the result is the bike you see here. It has a few parts that are "worn", but everything else is either re-finished or in excellent condition. I'm very happy with the results of this build and definitely consider this a "dream bike".

Re: 2012 SUMMER BUILD OFF SUBMISSION THREAD
1983-1985 THRUSTER VANISHING POINT
Theme: childhood dream survivor.
Ever since I started racing BMX, I have always wanted to build a top of the line old school BMX Bike. A racer from the era that I was born in which was 1984. When I started racing BMX in the early 90's I was too young and never had near enough money to be able to get the bike I really wanted.
When I first started racing in Simi Valley at Sycamore BMX, I always saw this guy at the track who caught my eye on a Thruster Vanishing Point. He was always out front, and always flew around the track with ease. I always noticed how smooth and quick he was. I always admired how cool his bike was with the decals that said, "Beware of rocket blast." I always recognized him from far with those blue Thruster decals in 2 shades of blue and saw his curved down crossbar Thruster handlebars. He also had a Thruster grainy looking seat post that always caught my eye. At the time, I was not aware that a Thruster slant stem even existed. I can't remember or recall what stem he was using.
I recently tried to ask Joan and Tony, the owners of Sycamore BMX if they remember the guy that raced the Thruster Vanishing Point back in 91'-92' when I remember. They have been the owners since I was a little kid racing there. Joan didn't seem to recall and Tony mentioned a name, "Hampton or Hansen" he stated.
This bike is a complete original survivor except for the RARE headset, TANGE MX-III I was told is re stickered and the KMC chain I'm not sure how old it is. I bought the MX-III with my intentions of it being a mint original survivor.
I know in the rules for submission it says that rare sometimes wouldn't work, but in the case of this very rare THRUSTER slant stem, I had to go with it because it tied it all together. ![]()

I really appreciate the help of my best buddy Brent for taking these pics with his canon camera and light filter set up. ![]()

I can not sit still. I have been tested for A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. and have neither. I don't need coffee, I just need a B.M.X. or surfboard to consistently ride and I'll be happy.

Re: 2012 SUMMER BUILD OFF SUBMISSION THREAD
First off Congrats to everyone who got a bike finished in time.
Second I hope y'all had as much fun building as I did.
Since this frame set is a little different than the run of the mill Hutches, I wanted to do it up outside the Hutch box so to speak. This type build off was perfect for just this type of build. I wanted to incorperate a bit of red since you hardly ever see red on Hutch bikes. Then the object was to not hutch it out to death. I hope you dig it.

Re: 2012 SUMMER BUILD OFF SUBMISSION THREAD
1987 Dyno Pro Compe Team Model

This bike came out killer and rides even better. I had been called bad words for "chopping" the frame up to run the Gyro setup correctly through the London Mod bridge but I think it looks super clean and you don't have cables sagging everywhere.
Parts breakdown.....

87 Pro Compe frame, pro compe fork, pretzel bars & drain pipe
Powder coated bright white
GT mallet stem, gyro set up, GT spc, GT chainring, Shimano PDX-15 pedels, GT pegs, Dia comp AD990 & MX900
Show polished
GT Power Series Cranks, Ukai speedline hoops, GT Superlace hubs, GT power disc
Survivor
Dyno seat
NOS
Gyro Cables, GT tires, Hatta headset, Dia comp Tech 6 locking levers, GT Super Soft grips, GT chainring bolts & Jive valve caps
New
Spokes, nipples, KMC chain & front brake cable

Re: 2012 SUMMER BUILD OFF SUBMISSION THREAD
PROJECT: RESTOVIVOR
MY actual 1984 "Unstamped" GT Performer from 28 years ago.....
Survivor partslist:
Frame/Fork: '84 GT Performer
Handlebars: GT Pro Performer
Seat Post: Dyno Drainpipe
Cranks: Redline Flight 401
Chainwheel: Redline Bubble Font 45T
Pedals: Shimano DX
Replacement partlist, but true to my prime riding years on this bad boy....1984-1987:
Wheelset: Skyway Tuff Wheel II's
Tires: GT Freestyle Tires
Brake Calipers: Dia Compe MX 1000's
Brake Lever: Dia Compe Tech 6 Locking Levers
Brake Pads: Skyway Tuff Pads
Stem: Pro Neck w/ Potts Mod
Grips: Oakley F1's
Dirt Skirt: SST
Seat: Cycle Pro Shotgun
Seat Clamp: Suntour
Freestyle Parts: GT Frame and Fork Standers

This is 1/2 of my concept behind this build......my firm belief is that these frames WITHOUT the GT logo stamped into the baloney cut were only available as a frame and fork BITD and they were in fact decaled as GT PERFORMERS. When the complete bikes were available later in the year in 1984, that is when it became the GT PRO Performer. How do I know this, you might ask?!? I remember personally removing my GT PERFORMER decals from my unstamped frame back in late '85/early '86 to replace them with the blue/white/pink version of the GT Pro Performer decals that were on the 1986 models. ![]()
![]()
This old GT ad is strong evidence to back up my theory. It is hard to make it out in this picture, but if you look hard enough you can see there is no PRO between GT and Performer.....![]()

The other 1/2 of my concept was to recreate my bike as I remember it sitting back in 1984/85. To the best of my memory from 28 years ago, what you see is what I was riding around on all those years ago when times were much more simple! ![]()
This bike brings back so many great memories for me and it holds such tremendous sentimental value, that I will never get rid of it. I LOVE MY BIKE! ![]()

Re: 2012 SUMMER BUILD OFF SUBMISSION THREAD
JMCshadow
theme, NOW or NEVER

i had planned on building this bike several times, all a different mix of parts/colors etc. but just never got around to putting it together, almost decided to leave it out of the build off, but last night i decided today was the day, while my daughter was sleeping i did a bit of pre-assembly, got up early today and got it all together. did a bit of fine tuning and headed out to the yard for some pics. none of it an easy task with a 2yr old in tow.
i did not "buy" any parts for this build, used only parts that i had stashed away!
it is a pretty basic, straight forward build with the exception of the stem, i have never seen another one, and it looks to be a cross over between a tuf-neck and early dk.

Change? I don't mind change. Change is fine as long as it doesn't try to take something away from me. Now give me back my childhood!

Re: 2012 SUMMER BUILD OFF SUBMISSION THREAD
1991 Haro Sport
The concept
My ultimate goal of building this Haro was to create one of the bikes I've always wanted to own but never had. I also wanted to make it mine and one of a kind by incorporating colors I love, functionality I need and custom touches that no one else would have. I achieved what I was after and have created a bike I will ride proudly at the skatepark and cherish in my collection for a long time. Thanks for reading and looking!
As the rules stated, here is my thoughtful, creative and innovatively built 1991 Haro Sport custom. It is not a factory spec, magazine ad, tribute or replica build, but is centered on the idea of an original bike thought through and assembled with craftsmanship in mind.
My Custom Touches
• custom mixed paint by rattlecan and airbrush
This is a one-off custom color achieved by layering and could only be duplicated by following the same steps again. I started with a base of white primer and rattlecan fluorescent yellow followed by a light dusting of flourescent green applied by hand with an airbrush. Multiple coats of clear enamel followed the colors along with lots of wet sanding by hand to achieve the final mirrored gloss finish. There is no touch-up paint for this bike...

• custom laser engraved stem
The first pure custom addition was having my stem laser engraved to make it completely unique. I created both logos from scracth in Adobe Illustrator and sent them to my engraver. It turned out exactly as I envisioned.

• custom 990 mounts added to the frame and forks
At my age and weight I need brakes that work and 990s is what it takes. I had this idea more than a year ago and when I found the frame and fork I finally got to do it. I had the 990 mounts welded on by a relative and they turned out perfect. This is one of those technological advances this bike should have had by 1991 - now mine does.

• over 200 custom colored (black, white and silver) clear vinyl decals created for the sticker bomb
One of the ways I like to set my bikes apart is with custom decals. I try to incorporate something recognizable from the brand but change the colors or design to make it unique to me. For this sticker bomb I also wanted to incorporate a mix of decals I've always favored liked the Freestylin', Vision Street Wear, Club Homeboy and Oakley logos. To tie them all together I used Adobe Illustrator to re-create my decals in colors that never existed - different mixes of black, silver and white. The colors were printed on clear vinyl and some of the pure black were plotter cut from black vinyl.
• easter egg: can you find the In-n-Out logo? I hide one on every bike...
One small detail I've been including on each bike I've restored in the last couple of years is the In-n-Out Burger logo. No mystery here - I like burgers and In-n-Out is my favorite.

24" Hutch Trick Star
Some of you might have got the chance to see this in person at the Philly BBQ (I've made a few upgrades since the show). This is a creation that sat as a frame in fork combo in my basement for almost a year. The Summer Build off gave me the motivation to finally build it. The idea for this cruiser started with the discovery of a Japanese made Trickstar frame and fork at a local yard sale. The top tube of the frame was totally destroyed, so I pondered what to do with the set. I ended up deciding to build a 24" TS out of it. Not just any color, I wanted the OG hutch Candy Blue. So the cuts/welds on the frame had to be perfect, due to the fact that you must chrome the frame set before applying the candy powder. I also had some upgrades made to the F/F combo, such as longer foot pegs. In all, the frame, forks and cruiser style Mike D’s took about 1 year to complete. The rest of the build went together pretty fast.

Theme: Raleigh Reflex Rollie Fingers - I wanted to find the most uncool bike I could find. This was at first an obvious choice. When I received the frame set I noticed it was really made well. Later I found the original test for the bike and started to actually like it. I tried to have fun and give the bike an identity. There was a thread in which another member asked how to pronounce Raleigh. I posted a picture of retired MLB pitcher Rollie Fingers for a goof, but that is how I always pronounced Raleigh. My influence was Rollie Fingers, the BMX Action test, and the original version of the Raleigh Reflex. Enjoy!

Bike: Cook Bros. 24 Team Issue
I have always been a fan of Cook Bros. because of their innovative features such as Uni clamp stem, front cantilever brakes, built in seatpost clamp and built in chain tensioners. They were also one of the first high quality parts makers.
This is definatly a grail dream bike for me. I was fortunate enough to pick up this frame for a song. The seller told me it was a Team Issue frame. I was a little hesitant but had to jump on it or it would be gone. Like every builder here knows, timing is everything. I did some reserch and with the 4 inch headtube(All Cook Bros. 24 Cruisers have a 5 inch headtube) the odd sized seatpost size, chain tensioners(only found on Cook Bros 20 inch bikes) and built in seatpost clamp I realized the guy might be right. After I recieved the frame I noticed whoever did the chrome job didn't know what they were doing. It looked terrible. I had Chip at C4Labs strip it and powder it gloss white. Stellar job as usual. Then the search was on for a set of Cook Bros. 24 forks. About a week later a set popped up on Ebay. They were very expensive but what Cooks Bros. parts aren't. Now that I had the frame and fork it was decision time, what colors to go with. A couple days later the Summer Build thread came up wanting a theme. I had just stickered the f/f up and was staring at it when it hit me. The american flag on the fork, red, white and blue. What could be better then representing our country with a Cook Bros. build.
I had been saving up Cook Bros. parts for a few years anticipating a dream grail build, had a set of NOS blue Araya 7x hoops with alot of other red and blue parts and the rest is history. This has been the most fun I have had and that is what its all about!
Here are a few pictures with a parts breakdown and a link to many more pics.
81 or 82 Cook Bros. Team issue 24 frame (serial number 009 ) with 4 inch hedtube, 26.7 seatpost tube, built in seatpost clamp and built in chain tensioners.
Cook Bros forks
Mongoose Kos Cruiser stainless steel bars, uncut.
Oakley B-2 grips with blue donuts
Cook Bros. slant stem
Blue anodised Hatta headset
Red anodised SST Dirtskirt
Sugino 26.7 seatpost
Cycle Pro Shotgun seat with red anodised rails
First gen Cook Bros dog bone cranks
Red anodised 39 tooth Tuf Neck chainring
Izumi chain
Cook Bros. sealed bottom bracket
First gen Bullseye pedals with blue anodised bodies
Blue anodised Dia Compe MX 1000 rear brake
Dia Compe cable clamps
Blue anodised Skyway fin used as rear brake shim
Finned Mathauser brake pads
Red anodised Dia Compe Tech III right brake lever
Blue anodised Araya 7x hoops
Stainless steel spokes
Red anodised Araya alloy nipples
Red Mitsuboshi Comp III yellow lable fat skinny tires
Cook Bros. bolt thru sealed hubs
Blue anodised chain tensioner washers
Red number plate
Original blue Cook Bros padset
These are all era correct parts to my knowledge except for the number plate.
This is the only Cook Bros. 24 Team I have ever seen. If any other member has seen one like this please let me know, Thanks!
I changed the bars a few times, trying Cook Bros Pro bars but the Kos bars feel much better. I have taken the bike on a few rides and love it! I am very proud to own a bike I built up from scratch to represent our great country! The flag I used in the pictures was the flag that was on my uncle Steve's burial. He was a veteran of the Korean war.
Thanks all for taking the time to look and listen to my story!
More pics as soon as I figure out how to add a link.

Re: 2012 SUMMER BUILD OFF SUBMISSION THREAD
1981 Mongoose Sunburst

The concept of this build was based, on the color, of a Gibson Les Paul Sunburst.

When I received this bike, it needed quite a few repairs. The stem was stuck, the forks were bent forward, the rear frame triangle was tweaked, and the chain had rubbed through the rear dropout tube as usual. Although the frame and forks were not modified, for this build off, it was restored the way it was meant to be. However, this build was mainly based, on a custom color concept and did my best to match the color, of the guitar.
When I went to take pictures, of the bike today, some kids were doing 180's, off the steps, behind the fountain. One, of the kids, came over to me and said, "That's legit! Can you do a trick, on it?" I said, "No, it's just a show bike I built for a contest. I'm going to take pictures of it." He seemed like he was disappointed and rode off.
