Vans...BMXer prerequisit.
Inspired, I went to the Vans site....man was I shocked to see that the show that I used to buy for $20 or less now cost $65 and they arent even made in USA anymore! I cant imagine what Redline ones cost with the logos on the side/foxing.
I see lots of hipsters sporting them, I love them for retro reasons (most kids that use them were not even alive when I sported them), but man they suck to walk around in all day....for $65 I could do much better.
I never got a pair of Jox Jag, but did always want them.

I wear vans nearly everhday, and find them super comfortable. The only other shoe I regularily wear are Chucks.

Re: Vans...BMXer prerequisit.
They are like slippers, but personally for me to walk a lot on concrete in NYC, they kill my heel and the balls of my feet, they breakdown fast.....but hey they were never about performance, they were not even really good for BMX, always tore to pieces, but looks are looks.

I have the old school blue suede and canvas low tops with white stripe, like I had in the 80's. Vans were expensive BITD. Pretty affordable by todays standards!!

IM just the opposite, Chucks most days with some vans thrown in. And an occasional Toms day. but now matter what I wear green Superfeet inserts, they make any shoe comfy.

When those high tops and then leather Vans came around yes they were pretty expensive I recall.
So it seems that only the custom models of the classic shoe are $65, regular models are $45, I guess thats not too bad....but considering its made in China now for $1.00, its very bad.

You think $65 bucks is a lot? I collect Vans and have some that are worth over $300. If you're looking for fancier more comfortable Vans try their Syndicate/Vault Lines or Supreme collaborations.

For a cheap canvas shoe that is made in China and that wears holes in it at about 3months, yes I do, at least when I was a kid they were made in USA, and most a third of that and were available in more color combos. I know they have many lines nowadays, but I was hoping to get some classic flava'. Alas no more red black and white checks. Any Redline team models?

I wear Sk8 Hi's till they completely fall apart. Even with daily use, they last a good while. The flat waffle sole is the best on platform pedals.

Yeah, I remember when Vans were $20. My Mom use to bitch about them back then because I went through so many. Killed my feet for all day back then & now too. But I still wear them, just can't give 'em up.

Re: Vans...BMXer prerequisit.
I remember seeing them in the city right outside Osan AFB in Korea in 96. Being a So. Cal. boy I almost peed a little when I saw them. It was then I knew I was buying bootleg Vans.
Lookin for black winners circle grips. Don't need to be NOS. Just decent enough for a rider.

Re: Vans...BMXer prerequisit.
The canvas checkerboard Vans they sell now are complete garbage. The ones they made in the 80s would last a long time. The new ones fall apart in a few months. And if you wash them do so in cold water and let them dry in the sun.Hot water in the washer and the heat from a dryer will break the glue down and they will fall apart even faster.I speak from experience.

A new pair of Van's for $65 bucks is money well spent as far as I'm concerned. Especially if you're picking up some of the limited editions like the Bad Religion's or Slayer's. I'll take 2 pair in size 10, please...
Will trade for Vinyl.

Re: Vans...BMXer prerequisit.
I also remember when Vans cost $20, and a bunch of them had the Hawaiian floral prints. I wore low top Vans a lot, but switched to the high tops after seeing the light blue/dark blue white stripe ones. Then I switched to Vision Street Wear high tops. They really held up.
I took many years off buying Vans until last year when I bought some low tops. They wore out really fast.
I did have Jox Jag in the early 80's too, but not any of the ones shown above. I had the low top checker board ones that I bought in 83 and 84. They were pretty good and had "bicycle wheel" pattern on the bottom to help with pedals. It looked like Skyway Tuffs on the sole.

Yea I had some Jox & Jag lace ups bitd and they were high quality and last me a long time.I think they were sold exclusively at Tom Mchan's.Going to have to check and see if they are still sold there. The Vans being sold now are cheaply made crap.

Re: Vans...BMXer prerequisit.
I've never seen a Thom McCan in Ohio since I moved out here (2000). I used to see several in NJ, but over the years I think I remembered seeing less and less. The one I typically bought at became a bagel store, and now it is a wallpaper and paint store. Good luck finding one of them in business.
VSW was maybe my favorite. You can still get some of them on Ebay, for higher prices like you'd expect. I've been thinking about buying a pair of high tops to include in my collection of bmx and freestyle stuff. As much as I wore and liked them, I should have a pair with my collection of things.

Re: Vans...BMXer prerequisit.
I just did a search online about Thom Mcan. They are still *kind of* being sold, but the company changed hands a few times and they supply discount stores. Their main distribution center was from NJ, which probably contributed to why I saw so many of the stores growing up. Maybe some shoes would turn up on Ebay?
