Flying W BMX Freebie....
While negotiating a price on a 1982 JMC Long Standard F/F for $200 in a dudes driveway,I ask if he has any other parts to toss in the deal... He throws in the pile pair of VDC(bent) Powerwing Bars in good shape and this little jem.... You should know how hard it was to hold my game face on when I seen this... Before clean up (not my underwear)--- 
And after... I'm trying to hook up with ESP to see if they have the original dye to re-stamp the top.....

The oval ESP stamp on the top has been previously polished to nothing ... There factory isn't far from my house and want them to look it over... That's a pretty good reason why. I'm happy either way....

Awesome ! Good on you .... It's funny, I contacted Marty (jr) when the first one to turn up w/the text on the side and he vaguely confirmed and remembered only 6-8 may have been done that way just for whatever reason -and since that time- outta the last 7 stems listed for sale or just finds, 3 have had the text on the side - leaving me to think there may have been a bit more then 8 made that way, or it's just real ironic.
As for the top - its sad it was molested in the past but personally I'd leave it be - its no arguement as to it's origin and the fact it's part of its history we'll before you could have done it - so be it - it presents beautifully and looks to be in sound structural condition - just put her on a worthy steed and call it a day.

Great find. Mine has devalued another $10 now that there is another one floating around.
My vote is to leave it as is with a spit polish. But i would still be paying them a visit if I was close to the factory(not to get restamped)
Regarding the stamping I would love to hear more.
I have a first gen one with the 'E.S.P' on the cap. It has the stamped body on the left side.But also has the front of the cap stamped 'FLYING W BMX' in a different font to the side.Three stamps in total on the complete stem.

I would have told him what he has. I couldn't sleep with myself or look in the mirror if I hustled someone out of a $1000+ part. I'm not saying what you did was wrong but, personally, I would have told the guy. Seeing the look of gratitude he would have given me out weighs scoring a stem.
REALLY need a "CAM" plate in red/white/blue!!

I dont want to sound like some altruistic guy that turns down deals. If I saw a $500 bike with $1000 worth of parts I'd jump on it in a nano second. But bluffing someone on a grail part would make me feel funny. But honestly, I never was a good businessman.
