I had a brand new Redline in 1986!!!
I remember back in 1986, my grandparents bought me a bike for christmas, but it was a kmart murray! so my mom got them to return it and took me to the local bike shop, and let me pick out a bike, I forgot over the years what model of redline I got, but when I looked at pics on this site, Im pretty sure it was a 1986 or 87 500c. I raced BMX a little bit, but was more into freestyle, so I had front and rear pegs on my 500, also put a laid back seatpost too, as I thought they were pretty cool! LOL Does anyone have an idea what a brand new 1986 500c would have cost back then? Im guessing it was around $350. but cant be sure. Was the 500c a mid level or top of the line also? I had great fun on that bike! Thanks.

it would depend on cranks, option, etc. I'd guess around $299 to $350

Not Top o' the line by any means if it was stock. Their base model if I remember correctly.

Yeah, it was their base model. I had a 500a. Cool bike, just not with all the bells & whistles.
Need: SKYWAY 9/16 right side pedal.

Re: I had a brand new Redline in 1986!!!
you sure it was a 500c and not a 500b or a 600c ?
neither bikes were top but also not really bottom.
the 600c was a mid level all around bmx with a nod towards freestyle ...
600c -
http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/redline/19586
the 500b was redlines entry level all around bmx. the tri moly version of the series III
500b -
http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/redline/12530
im sure neither bike cost more then 225.00 when new if bone stock.
but many shops added parts to make each bike unique and to give
kids more options and choice.

Re: I had a brand new Redline in 1986!!!
The 500b frame looks pretty close to what my bike did, however it did not have mag wheels, or color on the frame, was all chrome, the redline logo and design are what was on my bike though, Im positive about that, what is the difference between 500b and 500c?it was pretty stock when I got it, but really light weight i remember, although I did put front and rear pegs on it. I remember I liked my handlebars almost vertical, but the bars got stripped( i think when I was learning how to jump larger ramps, I put too much body weight on the bars somehow and stripped them out), and I always was having issues with the bars staying in place.
My dad does have a pic of me sitting on the bike, but I dont have any pics of it, and unfortunately I got rid of this bike a few years later when I was 15, and started chasing skirts more than biking and got out of it, wish I wouldve stayed with it though, it was something I truly enjoyed and was pretty good at. I built an 8ft quarter pipe when I was 13 with a friend of mine, got real good on it too!
I also remember going to ohio bike shop to see the GT tour, they had a ramp on the back of the GT trailer, eddie fiola and others were there, I was impressed at how good those guys were. Although I had a redline, I really liked the neon colored GT bikes of those days, especially the neon blue! oh how I loved the 80s!!

Re: I had a brand new Redline in 1986!!!
Most likely in the 225-250 range. My 84 500a was 200 for the white. If you wanted chrome( the shops in connecticut) always charged more , like 20 bucks. At about 3 bills , you would have been into the 600 c . You never know , some shops jacked the prices up back then.

Just for clarity...I was told that "A" models were the lower end and "C" were the top end for Redline bikes (from high to low --> C, B, A). Is this not the case, but completely vice versa?

Re: I had a brand new Redline in 1986!!!
Wasn't the 85 a 500b, then 86 on a 500 c. My friend had a 88 400c if I remember right? It was a light blue into gray back triangle. And he just threw it out a few months because of a stuck post!!!!( wish he sent it to me to get the post out, because it was his bike from when he was a kid!!! That stinks)

Believe you are correct. I know the 500a was 84, 500b was 85 (and went to trimoly frame), and pretty sure 86 brought the 500c.
