Re: 1979 Takara
It looks extremely light. And yes, it does resemble a Mongoose of the era.

Re: 1979 Takara
My local bike shop carried them back in the day. I have a complete in the garage that I will try to submit. Look at the pics from the Bend show, I think it is in there.

my brother aquired one of these somehow...i think he saw it sticking out of somebodys garbage.....light is NOT a word to describe it though........his is pretty heavy compared to a mongoose of the same era....

Re: 1979 Takara
TAKARA? Bikes? Anyone know if it's any relation to the Japanese toy company TAKARA? the ones who invented Transformers before Hasbro bought them up back in the early 80's? It may be feasible that they added boys bikes to their toy / kids market. It would make sense because its from the same era too.
Just thinking out loud... ![]()

Re: 1979 Takara
They were sold in the Schwinn shops by us BITD ($150) & a buddy down the street had one. His was a tank, heavier than mongooses for sure. His had the super duty wheels which were wheels with spokes so thick they look like motorcycle spokes. I've been told they did make a chromoly version with light weight race wheels which were nice but my buddy only had the low end one. Still cool & I have 1 in the garage, frame only.

Re: 1979 Takara
I had a black one new back around 1980 or 81. It was my first ever BMX.
Red components on it, and my parents got it at a real bike shop. I remember there being a higher version than mind.
I had those 'motorcycle sized spokes', and yeah; it was a heavy bike.
My next BMX was a Hutch Pro Racer, and I remember the acceleration of that Hutch scared me silly. I couldnt believe a BMX could be so fast. Probably due to the fact it was 10 pounds lighter than the Takara!!
My Takara had both coaster and rear caliper brakes.
I just scored a rough chrome one with Tange forks. I hope to build up a minty rider, powdered black with nice components and Tuffs. We'll see how it turns out!

Re: 1979 Takara
Mine was bought new (I don't have it anymore) and it was the sparkle red outlaw. Heavy as hell. They had steel "super duty" weinmann rims with 13 or 14 guage spokes and steel hubs with a coaster (mine was a Bendix). 2-clamp stem (ala Mongoose) and basic box bars. Mine started out with Winner's Circle style grips, chainguard tabs and black MX tires. By the time I got rid of it, it had an addicks chainring and sugino steel spider and a freewheel conversion kit with 890s. Original seat on mine was a padded messenger type with a steel seatpost.
I remember this bike so well because it was my first BMX. It was bought in a shop in Ct. that still exists ("The Bike Shop" in Manchester, Ct.) and I believe at the time, they were actually a Takara dealer. They had very nice road bikes BITD with lugged/brazed frames.
I do know that there was no way mine was chromo. It was all hiten steel.
I think I'd like to build another one, but I've never seen sticker kits for them.
