Redline RL20II ?s

I must admit, I am a bit embarrassed that i don't know the differences between the 85,86 and 87 model years with regard to frame/fork construction. Somebody old school me please. Thanks.

Re: Redline RL20II ?s

Well, see if I can help a little...

There were actually 84's too, if I'm not mistaken.  I don't know much about them.  This should be a good thread!

There were two different 85's I believe, Jap, and Tai.  Japan being a little harder to find from what I understand.

85's have straight braces on the rear standers:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/Parts%20For%20Sale/IMG_2196.jpg

Japan versions also had higher fork pegs, that were "braised" on instead of welded, which I really don't know what that means..  but no welds:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/Parts%20For%20Sale/IMG_2189.jpg

85's also didn't have a painted black bottom bracket (In most cases from what I can tell)

Colors were Yellow, Turq, Radberry, Chrome?

86, and 87 had "L" shaped braces on the rear standers (This is actually an 87)
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/017.jpg

Painted Bottom Bracket

87's were the same I believe, except different color offerings, and decal design.

88's had 990's, new colors, no chrome, and different decals.

Just the little that I know.  Others I'm sure will chime in with more info.  smile

Re: Redline RL20II ?s

A few things to add:  Some early '85s were solid frame colors, no chrome tails
'87 and '88 had the lower fork pegs.
Also, there were two sizes to the screw in fork pegs.  The early ones were smaller with 3/8" threads and the later ones were metric 12 X 1.25 threads.

Re: Redline RL20II ?s

Thats a good start. Curious more now about the differences between the 86 and 87 models besides colors and parts.

Re: Redline RL20II ?s

A few more things:

88 had larger fork pegs

87 and 88 had "split" cable guides, pre 87 had "solid" cable guides (like a solid ring with no slit in the middle)

Re: Redline RL20II ?s

The only differences I know between 86 & 87s are the cable guides are solid on 86, 2 rings on 87. And of course the fork pegs height.

Re: Redline RL20II ?s

'86 still had the cable loop on the top tube?  These were gone on the '87s?

Cable guides were on both 86 & 87s, just different styles.

Yeah, I have one, finally. You are correct, I need one in every color now. I'm happy to have just the one though.

Next question, Difference in where its made for 86??? Still the brazed peg bosses on the forks??

I believe in '85 all production moved to Taiwan...  And welded peg bosses.

The Redline Professor will be along soon, he'll be able to answer all of your questions.  I think he can smell RL-20II discussions in progress.  Right Kev?  lol

Are you interested in '86 and '87 to try and determine what year yours is?  If so, post up some pics?  Heck, post up pics any way, I always like to look at Redlines.

86's were all Tai from what I understand.  They transitioned from Japan, to Taiwan in 85.

My 87 has both, well I'm not sure were on the "top tube" you're talking about, but if it's the one with the hole between the welded connector tube, then yes, I have both. Can see in my bikes when discussed in the forum. big_smile

This is the one, I don't think '87s and '88s have these.  But the '85s and '86s do.

As I mentioned before, my 87 has that, just it's 2 rings instead of 1 solid piece. You can see it in my bikes pict of the Redline.

Yeah, I saw that.  I looked around the other '87s and there are some with and some without.  It must have been a mid year change or something.

Re: Redline RL20II ?s

I have been wanting this bike since 1985 and when I got it earlier this week I realized how much I really didn't know about them. So here it is, crappy cell phone pics.

http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa57/macaltec/Bikes/Redline%20RL20II/IMG_20120614_174036.jpg
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa57/macaltec/Bikes/Redline%20RL20II/IMG_20120614_174317.jpg

So with the given information, this is an 86. Now lets talk correct parts.

Re: Redline RL20II ?s

Nice!!
Yeah matrutledg, the only thing I can guess is maybe some have been broken off. They are pretty fragile compared to the solid ones from 86.
Hey macaltec, I've seen those pedals before, what brand are they?

I just noticed we have the same letter on our user names. That won't be confusing. lol
