1983 Pantha Stud PR-20

New Zealand made Pantha Stud. Bought by me, well mum really I guess, from a lawnmower shop in Waihi in about 1985. Originally blue.

This was my second BMX and my second Pantha after my MX1002. I got it when I was 11 and rode the hell out of it right through my teens.
I was visiting my folks a few months ago and couldn't believe it when I found it in pop's shed. Stoked!I'd painted black like Mad Max when I was a young fulla and it was in pretty poor shape. I'd also got dad to weld some pegs on the drop-outs and forks as well as a loop at the top of the seat stays for some sweet freestylin' action. Now I am a geriatric I decided to take the frame back to something closer to original so I ground them off and stripped the frame back to metal before doing a rebuild. I put some new tires on more suited for old-fulla cruising and a few other new bits but tried to salvage as much as I could. It's pretty much done now but I'd like to track down a matching front brake and a longer drainpipe seatpost, otherwise I'm really happy with it. It was such a big part of my childhood that I don't think I'll ever sell it even though I can barely ride it now, it sure got tiny over the years! Just wish I still had that ol' MX1002.

Re: 1983 Pantha Stud PR-20

Thanks a lot guys! I wish it was my studio, luckily we have one at work. Here's a few more process pics.

I'd painted it black like Mad Max's car when I was a young fulla and it was in pretty poor shape.

Hacking off the pegs and foot loop. The forks were small enough to fit in the little sandblaster at work.

All bits pulled apart and frame stripped to bare metal. I degreased everything, polished all the bits I could and repacked all the bearings. I thoughtfully relocated all the old grease onto the taps in the bathroom.

Recovering the busted-ass seat to be more acceptable to my busted arse.

The frame through the ages. Mean as pro-level coathanger paint rack!

It's pretty much done now but I'd like to track down a matching front brake and a longer drainpipe seatpost, otherwise I'm really happy with it.

Hey thanks man! Nah, that's not me on tm. Weird to see another Pearce there with a Pantha, pretty tempted to bid on it.
