Re: Mother effing thieves!

I've always wondered about this scenario... you know when you buy something from someone here and they send it via USPS for example. Their return address is usually on the package. Now what if a newb who has bad intentions go to the FS forum, then "hunts" for someone local, dibs on an item, pays for it, and when the package arrives, he gets this guy's local address. Sometimes I think maybe I shouldn't put a return address anymore. Has this ever crossed anyone's mind?

+1.  I had bikes listed in the museum.  Took them down for 2 reasons, this being one of them.

Edit: There should be a feature to list your bike here anonymously.

edit: I mean, if you go to an art museum, there are plenty of privately owned pieces on display, but they do not advertise who owns what.

Re: Mother effing thieves!

Some good discussion points regarding security have popped up. I am very security conscious, I don't event do the 'Out of Office Email' (like advertising your home is vacant), and when I posted my first bike on here I took time to remove my house number which appeared in the background.

I love the idea of not associating owners with bikes - it would really take nothing away from the value of the site.

What do y'all think? Would this cable be easy to hacksaw through?  Maybe a 20ft cable to run through a number of bikes (inside). ...

Hailing from the makers of The Club steering wheel lock, this flexible steel cable measures 20 feet long, allowing it to secure most outdoor items.
Yellow finish for high visibility
Weather-resistant vinyl coating
Tough 3/8-inch cable
Each end is open to fit a wide variety of padlocks and utility locks
Can secure items to trailers, truck beds, luggage racks, etc.
Long enough to secure most ATVs
Also great for grills, patio furniture, ladders, lawn mowers and anything around the house

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Th … oduct.html

I think these cables work well against bolt cutters, but not very well against a cut-off wheel. Determined thieves are hard to discourage.

Having the bikes on here is one thing, just don't tell people where they are kept.. That's all.

One other thing... I don't keep all of my eggs in one basket. The only stuff I keep at home is what I am working on at the moment. Parts and completes are kept offsite in secure lockup. God help the poor unfortunate sob I catch on my property. There are a bunch of No Trespassing signs posted and Beware of Dog signs too. They have been warned and when I'm done with them, the dogs can have them wink If I don't catch them, the camera's will.

Hell yea!  Anon uploads!!! Museum can finally behold my 24k solid gold pft with forged platinum cranks

This pertains way outside bikes.  I have an alarm/camera on my shop but that's to keep honest thieves out, somebody wants they gonna try.  Off-site storage and showing others where it's at... I don't know about that.. I would be uneasy showing people my stuff in that scenario compared to someone looking at some parts in my driveway, etc.. selling somebody something is one thing, but rock star access to the stash is another.

I'm from the philly area and use a storage unit.  I work on bikes in mine too.  I always thought it seemed pretty secure and I spend a lot of time there.  I have also been using a PO box since I moved for that other reason.

Everyone wonders why I don't upload tons of picts (to the TN guys ) of my collection or bikes I score for that matter.  If I did,  this would prob happen to me. Of course they would need a big truck, bolt cutters, and alarm knowledge ROLF but still...  I don't post much of anything here or anywhere....   Chances are it was someone who seen a bike or two online or new you most likely:(
