Cool thread.  Ti seems so ideal to me....wish I better understood why it isn't more common.

I think the major reason is cost. It's very expensive.

Also to weld titanium isn't the easiest thing to do. I guess it's difficult to work with.

But if done right, it's killer!!!!!

Re: ***Everything Titanium- BMX FRAMES AND PARTS***

Well....yeah, it's expensive, but it also seems to be reserved normally for small guys.  It has a much higher strength than steel, chrome moly, stainless steel, yet it seems like some people have suggested concerns with failure, and I'm wishing I better understood.

BTW - not to mix work with BMX, but I will tell you that I have stood in front of an ingot of titanium, lit to 3000F, that was close to 3' diameter x 18' long, and as well seen it melted in an arc melting furnace @ 18,000 amps.  Cool stuff.

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

Graveyard Ti handlebars are not titanium , the Ti stands for Takashi Ito the guy that they were designed for.

Re: ***Everything Titanium- BMX FRAMES AND PARTS***

I wonder about the strength of titanium myself. It's used in mountain biking quite a bit. Don't hear many issue's there. Yet in bmx where it is used very rarely it seems like everyone has an opinion on it. It's to flexy, breaks easy, are some of the ones I hear a lot.

Personally, I think if a frame is made well enough it will take some abuse. It's hard to make a judgement on titanium based solely on Eastern's ti bike. That thing had cut outs all over and weighed just over 2 pounds. Seems pretty fragile to me.

But if a company built a 3.5 pound 20' frame I'm sure it can withstand most anything thrown at it.

The problem is cost to stiffness. Ti flexes more than an aluminum frame would. Plus with the likes of redlines ultra stiff carbon project 79 and supercross' envy v3 that weighs 2 and half lbs theres no reason to really use all that much ti except for bolts. Alum and carbon technology has come so far since the mid 90s.

Cheap Ebay titanium stem bolts. Work just as good as any other bolt. Think  I paid about $18 shipped.
