I guess when Santa forgets one ELF.....it calls another

So less than a month ago I posted this about a nicely equipped '94 ELF:

http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=423768

Now I stumbled on to this.....an '86 ELF Mini Cruiser, nicely equipped:

http://i967.photobucket.com/albums/ae154/troynlori/Elf%20Mini%20Cruiser/DSCI0407.jpg

Really nice, metallic paint (presumably OG),
First Gen Bullseye cranks (177 - don't know if OG Paint?)
Square cut DK Mini Stem (with aluminum quill)
MX1000/Tech 3 with Terry Cable.
Odyssey seat clamp (those existed in the '80's?)

Sharp wheelset:

Clean collared Racelace hubs:

ARAYA 24 x 1-3/8 rims:

Aluminum CW Mini Cruiser bars; Shimano 333 Freewheel, UNI Mini:

My preferred pedal and I don't even feel the need to replace the cages...lol:
http://i967.photobucket.com/albums/ae154/troynlori/Elf%20Mini%20Cruiser/DSCI0399.jpg

The guy I picked this up from was really cool.  He said he's 67 and raced this thing into the early '90's and won a bunch of trophy's.  I'm going to let my boy run it.

Christmas when it's 95 outside!

Leatherman - I'd so love to hook you up, but then....well....my son would need those bars bad.  But I tell ya' what I'm gonna do....I'm gonna talk to Santa and see if he can pay you a visit.  Seriously....wishing you some good Karma.

Trev - I know it man....its unbelievable.

Who knows of "Gallo" headset?  It's a nice aluminum one, unfortunately missing the top nut.

I'm just going to go with, in general mini's are limited to 130#, and I plan to make sure that is adhered to.  This thing is scary light (supposedly 17# - and I believe it).

Re: I guess when Santa forgets one ELF.....it calls another

I'm finally tearing into this project.  I wanted to take it all the way down, clean it, and build it up.

As luck would have it, I figured out tonight that the misalignment of the cranks in picture two is not just that the crank is on the wrong spline.  Something is wrong.  The arms don't look bent, so my conclusion is that the spindle is twisted.  Best I can gather it's about 3 degrees.  I suppose it could be ridden that way, but....sad

Anyone heard of this?  Better yet, anyone know the solution?  I know this is going to freak people out, but I am actually considering sticking one arm in a vise, and a pipe on the other (with rags, etc for protection, and see if I can bend it back.  I mean....what are my options?

Damn, that is still such a killer find.
With regards to tweaking the spindle back how heavy is your kid?

If he/she is light bend them back to straight and let em rip it up.

Re: I guess when Santa forgets one ELF.....it calls another

Ha....   My kids are lightweight.  It's strange, they are blond haired, blue eyed, less tall, lean, etc, etc. where as I am brown hair greenish-brown eyes, and a big boy.  Ha, ya' know, you'd almost think they weren't mine.  That'd be a hoot.

Okay, unless someone else comes up with a better idea, I'm gonna try to bend 'em back straight in sort of a Hobbes12 (Neanderthalian) way.

While kind of crude, these are the nicest cranks I've owned....super light and I was gonna say super strong...but....  I love the concept.

"Who knows of "Gallo" headset?"

Are sure it's 'Gallo' and not 'Galli'? Galli was an Italian component manufacturer that was a lesser known competitor to Campagnolo. Even though a lot of die-hard campy fans want to dismiss them as simple 'clones' to Campagnolo, they had a lot of incredible components that were truly unique to the brand. Their Galli Sport Roller Bearing Bottom Brackets are absolutely killer!

You might be wondering what the silver stripes on the top tube are.  Turns out this is not OG paint.  I don't know if it was done at the home, but they did a pretty decent job and I'm keeping the blue.  However, this is where the blue electric tape was holding the brake cable on.  It must have been added shortly after painting and the glue from the tape merged with the paint and I actually had to take the paint off to get rid of the gunk.  So...I plan to use white velcro as cable ties, and I decided a little silver edging under the velcro might look good....we'll see.

Sorry....I missed this comment earlier.  It is Galli.  It's a really nice, and interesting head set.  It's certainly roadbikeish (for all I know).  It is actually shimmed into the head tube, but nice and tight.  Can't beat tapered roller bearings.  I guess that's how all those Tange 125's are made.

Re: I guess when Santa forgets one ELF.....it calls another

So I've never picked up a survivor that seemed perfect.  This one is just about that.  The whole bike was selected with light weight in mind, and all worked together well.  This bike is virtually exactly like I picked it up off CL.  In cleaning this up, what I did:

-Replaced left crank arm because the original was manufactured wrong, and had it powder coated white again - thanks Chip @ C4 labs - beautiful work.
-Replaced grips with same, but new (I did resto the originals too).
-Exchanged original black MX1000 for a white one I had on another bike.
-Added a 1983 Sedis chain I had (only part missing from CL pick up).
-Only hand polishing of aluminum parts.

So what did I get:

Re: I guess when Santa forgets one ELF.....it calls another

Thank you.

So the only thing I couldn't stand was the seat.  So the one part I really changed was that, but I think it's a great improvement:
