Stem sizes....

Recently picked up a 99 Mongoose Chameleon for a steal and have been putting NOS parts on it....

I just got a new stem but it doesnt fit....says it is 22.2mm in diameter and about 6" in total length. It will fit a 7/8" handlebar.
But it doesnt drop inside my threaded fork.....grrr......what is the small size for pre Walmart Gooses? is it some goofy metric size.
Asking so I know to get the right one next time....really could have sworn I had it, but 22.2 mm is too big.

WTB my youth back....but since that's impossible, I'll settle for some old school BMX fun.

Looking for the following F&F or Completes
83 Mongoose Californian (chrome) - 84 Diamondback Viper (chrome) - 87 Mongoose Decade (pastel any)

Re: Stem sizes....

Quill should be 21.1mm. Dunno what kind of Goose that is, but if it's a 99 and still has a threaded fork then I'm guessing entry-level.

Re: Stem sizes....

the bike is in the museum here http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/mongoose/58014
not sure of the level or the bike as far as entry model or not.

it is a 1999 Mongoose Chameleon and it weighs in at about 26 lbs the way it sits in the pics.
far cry better than the 35 lb bikes from Wally World

as for the stem being 21.1....that would explain why the 22.2 quill stem doesnt fit.
but I still love doing all the crazy shit im supposedly too old to be doing on it. so until im hospitalized
im riding the piss out of this lightweight set of wheels.

Re: Stem sizes....

nah, the two stems are definitely different sizes....its been 20 yrs....i just had to catch back on to things
totally noob of me not to read the stem for the size before buying the other one....
21.1mm vs 22.2mm
