Redline RL20ii Tribute

Redline RL20ii Tribute

Ok, so I’ve been working on this for a while.  I’m calling it pretty much finished at this point.  There’s one piece that isn’t correct, but tired of looking for it, and will find it eventually.

Here’s my RL20ii Tribute to a guy that inspired me to get into freestyle back in the 80’s.  I was 12ish, and he was probably 16/17 years old.  He and his group of friends rode around town, all sported the best bikes of the late 80’s.  In my eyes, they were some of the best freestylers I had ever seen.  I didn’t get to any of the shows in the big city, as I grew up in a small town about 1.5 hours south of St Paul/Minneapolis.

Anyway, these guys were my inspiration, even though I (and my friends) took a lot of heat from them.  They’d mess with us constantly, put chocolate bars on our seats, take our quarters at the “Ice Cream Shoppe† (Favorite local hangout w/ Super Mario Bros), little things like that.  Really, it was just a part of growing up.  It was all harmless, and either way, we all wanted to be like these guys.

Back to the bike.  So Chris had top notch bikes, as did the rest.  Most rode Haro, including him, until 88.  He had an 88 Haro Team Master, and then bought a Black RL20ii.  It might as well have been compared to him rolling up in a Ferrari in our small town.  All the Haros were beautiful, of course, but this was different, exotic even…  The sight of the bike is forever burned into my brain.

So, last year, I stumbled upon some old pictures of us at a local show, and saw the bike again.  Immediately, I wanted to re-create it.

Here are some of the old pictures of him:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/3ad48048.jpg

And of course…  Me..  haha!

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/morr5/7bcf3fc2.jpg

Here’s the bike!

I tried to capture as much of the detail as I could.  Again, he moved all of the 88 Team Master parts over to the RL20ii F/F.  Of course the gyro didn’t work, so he went with a SpinTech stem.  Only thing I couldn’t source (If anyone has one, please let me know), was what I believe was an 87 GT Seat.  Hard to tell by the photos, but I’m sure that’s what it was.  One of the coolest things I found, was a Haro Team Disc, with OG stickers on the back of it.  Only addition that I’d like to do, besides the Seat, is grab some repop decals perhaps for the seat post.

All OG paint, and OG parts..

So, here it is!

Re: Redline RL20ii Tribute

looks like the same bike!

Aside from the fact that he was obviously using a Penn tennis ball and yours is a Wilson.  GET IT RIGHT!  big_smile  Joking of course.

Awesome ride youve got there.  You really need to track that guy down and share pics of your build with him.  Badass.

"My Bikes" are mostly still in the project phase.  I will update and add photos as the builds progress.  Thanks.

How Does It Ride? Were you able to get the spin tech dialed in? I know they can be tricky.

Awesome Build Cail!

Re: Redline RL20ii Tribute

Thanks guys, yeah, he knows I built it, also shared it with some of the other guys he used to ride with.

Now, looking at the pics, I did add a couple things.  GT Hollow pegs on the back, and GT aluminum pegs for the front..  again, just from what I could tell, that's what it looked like.  I also cut the damn zip ties..  lol

SpinTech..  what a pain!  haha!  Yeah, got it dialed in pretty good.  I think I need some better pads, it's pretty tight, but pads aren't as sticky as I hoped.  Used old GT pads, might have to find some better ones.

It's smooth, and nice, and roomy...  smile

Re: Redline RL20ii Tribute

@chromey - Thanks man!  No future mullet, but I'd rock some short Vision shorts, and would kill for a fanny pack right now!  Haha!

@kmpap - You know it man...  messing around is not my style!  smile

@gustafa - Yeah, did some riding this weekend actually.  It's a very nice ride.  I'm not terribly good at anything, but it was fun to mess around, of course after I took off those worthless RL pegs in front, and added the GT pegs on both ends.  Made life a little easier.  Gets off the ground pretty well though.  Wheels, and HP tires are so nice in the parking lots by me.  Very fun bike!  Just need to get better brake pads, and get the SpinTech tuned up a little better.

Re: Redline RL20ii Tribute

Very nice. What year is that model again?  I know a guy who just scored a chrome frame that used to be half black and chrome. These redlines were exotic to me back in the day and they still are. Not sure who it was on this site who had one of every color around his billiards table. Very cool!

Re: Redline RL20ii Tribute

@00_Duck - It's an 87!

@RAD-bandit - Thanks for the heads up!  Yeah, I probably don't do enough to damage them.  Just some easy rolling tricks.  smile

@robk131313 - Yeah, as I was doing it, I was thinking, "What in the hell is this for?"  haha!  Some of the random trends in the 80's..  haha!

@vt102 - Post #5...  smile

Re: Redline RL20ii Tribute

That bike is awesome! I love how it looks like a well preserved rider and not a show piece.  I had an older kid like that in my neighborhood, his bike was an 85 Master.

Re: Redline RL20ii Tribute

Sweet Build!!!!
Personally, I would bet against it being a GT seat, in the 3rd pic it sure looks like the nose of the seat has a "sharper" look to it, like an elina flyte tech or elina made peregrine seat.  or maybe even the same seat that's on my rl20b in my bikes.  I think its a viscount made seat, but come to think of it, I think they did use that same seat model for a few brands and just stamped the side, or the back (in the case of the redline ones) big_smile
Awesome tribute bike!!  It looks like a killer ride!

I hope you have a big trunk.....because I'm puttin' my bike in it!   -Andy Stitzer

Re: Redline RL20ii Tribute

It's definitely looking like a Viscount 87-model GT/Dyno/DynaMAX seat.  The skinny/short version with the finger grips under the nose.
Cail let me check my seat stash - I may have one for you.

Looks like two (blue / yellow) ACS stickers on the seat too.

Re: Redline RL20ii Tribute

Thanks JT, addie, Paul, vt102, Polanco, whitebread..  appreciate it!

@quick2 & chromey - I thought the seat might be an Elina by that 3rd picture as well, but looking at the 1st picture, it looks like the 87 GT with the groove on the top.  Also, I'm pretty sure I saw one of the pics that I don't have scanned in, that there was a pretty clear GT Wing logo.  The only think I do know, is that it's not a dominator!  Hahaha!

@Hermes33 - Yeah, I asked him a few years ago, he said he gave it to a kid years back.

@JAMMJ - Hells yeah, it's a very nice survivor.  The paint on these things were very fragile.  Most were stripped, at least the top tubes (I know Chris eventually stripped most of the black off his, and stickered it up, like it was common to see in 88-90ish.

Thanks again guys..  Pretty cool bike for me to have.  Also, a nice transition from doing something Haro..  even though all the parts are from one..  baby steps!  lol
