THE DEFINATIVE GUIDE TO THE STANDARD PLATFROM LENGTHY
Ok so the sun is shining out here in California and I`ve just gotten a key frame for a collection I`ve been working on so the obvious choice is PICTURE TIME !!!!!!
I`ve worked hard to build the most complete collection of platform Lengthys anywhere. I believe I`ve achieved my goal and now want to share it so it can be used as a reference guide for anybody that collects the Standard Platform Lengthy. Grab a chair and enjoy the Mid School goodness. ![]()
The Standard Byke Company started in November of 1991. In 1992 Rick Moliterno had Soutwick Machine make eight prototype frames. After recieving the frames and testing them Rick decided that Southwick couldn`t meet the needs of Standard. Out of the eight frames the whereabouts of only two of the eight frames is known for sure Southwick #2 & Southwick #3. Southwick #2 is rude crude and downright Awesome !!!! Pay close attention to the extremely slow radius bends of the seatstay tubes, the large radius dropouts, The experimentation with 990 mount height notice the double stacked mounting, the tack welded cable mounts, and the wide back end with chainstay tubes flaring out and continuing to the end of the dropout.
1992 Southwick #0002 Clear over raw finish and 2nd Standard frame ever made.

1992 Southwick #0003 Chrome 3rd Standard ever made. Check out the much sharper bends in the seatstay tubes, cleaner soldered cable guides & threaded bung for mounting a bashguard to the frame how sweet is that.

After the Southwicks Standards frames were Gardner Built about 150 to 200 of these frames were built. The Gardner frames have a improved dropout design that I feel was the most rider friendly of all the Lengthy dropout designs. This particular Lengthy is S/N G125 the serial numbering sequence started at G100 making this the 25th Gardner Built Lengthy. One other unique feature about this frame is the engraved Si logo on the back of the seat tube identifying it as a Team Rider frame. This frame was ridden by Ron Kimler and has deep metallic purple paint. It was featured in the Fat ones video and full page ads in ridebmx, 100% survivor in it`s original paint & decals which are unique to the Gardner frames and are coined "Spraycan Guy" decals. These are my favorite decals for the early bikes and there is still two soldered cable guides on the down tube.
1992 Gardner Built Lengthy 1"

Here is the frame in RIDEBMX it still has most of the original stickers still on it. You can see the "TAJ" sticker that`s still on the headtube.

In 1993 Standard was once again having problems keeping up with demand so they turned to the Waterford Bicycle Company. This is the very 1st Waterford Prototype frame built, it is a Lengthy, has no serial number and is a 1" frame. This is frame was delivered to Standard in Dec of 1992 and was to be the 1993 model. Once again notice the change to the rear dropouts they now have a flat angled top instead of being cutout and the cable guides have been upgraded. The finish is Clear over raw.
1993 Standard Lengthy Pototype #1 Waterford Built.

The downtube decal is a later 94/95 style the correct decals would be the Spraycan guy decals like the 92 Gardner has.
This Lengthy top tube decal is original and correct for 93.

This is the 2nd gen of Waterford Built 1" frames and would be used from 1994 to 1995. Notice that now the rear dropout is rounded top and bottom.
1995 Standard Lengthy

This is the last platform design that Standard used for the Lengthy. It was pretty much the same as a 94/95 with the exception that gussetts were added for strength on the toptube & downtubes. This frame came out of Canada and is somewhat of a freak it has a HUGE 21 3/4" topube. It also has very trick optional seatstay 990 mounts with dual cable guides and custom cable adjusters. The paint and decals are 100% original except for the Molsen tap handle sticker hahahha.
1996 Standard Lenthy 1 1/8"

Here are some frame specs for the above frames. ![]()

Might need to be moved but if it was not in catchall I would of never seen it and learned a few things. While it may belong in another section, please leave it for some of us to see, if only for a few days.If it started in the info section ,me and others may have never seen it at all .

Re: THE DEFINATIVE GUIDE TO THE STANDARD PLATFROM LENGTHY
I always seem to prefer how the back end of the earlier gen lengthy/shorty look like, especially how the end of the seatstays & chainstays flar out at the drop outs . Was there ever a bashguard specially made for the '92 lengthy ? got a pic ? Never knew the '96 model even had an optional seatstay mounted 990, very cool tho! But how bout the shorty ? which one came out first ? What a bout the headtube size ? I thought the later ones use 1-1/8 inch headset ! Hopefully Standard will reissue them (lengthy+shorty) one day... ![]()

I have added it to the info section that was the main reason I wrote it. I wanted people to also be aware that it exists as most people have never seen a Southwick or Gardner Built Standard. ![]()

The Lengthy frames were the first but Shorties were also made in 1992 by Gardner which is what I ride pretty much daily. The 1996 Lenthy is the first year with a 1 1/8" head tube. I do not support any reissue bmx parts of any kind but to answer your question "Yes" Standard will eventually be releasing reissues of the Lengthy in thier Legacy series and I`d imagine it will be a copy of the Waterford design. There were no bashguards made specifically for the 1992 Lengthy. ![]()

Historical!
Nice work Darrin!
Here's a link to Erin Donato riding her Shorty (I think it's 1992 Gardner made) that she later gave to my wife: http://youtu.be/i47K2M6ap2s
This post will motivate me to dig that bike out and get the serial # for you.
