Spline Drive

Are bolt-less spline drive sprockets the wave of the future?  Considering getting one for a "rider" bike of mine.  Anyone have any experience with spline drive, bolt-less sprockets?

I've got an S&M L7 spline drive on my 24" Dirt Bike. No problems with it so far.

I'll be putting one on my son's 18" after this weekend. Considering one for my bike too.

Re: Spline Drive

I put an S&M spline drive sprocket on my new InDust 22"  http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.p … 8#p3501338 . . . .

but honestly I'm still a little dubious of the benefits of this 'invention.'  It seems like any small imperfections in the machining of the sprocket, or any damage to the spindle itself, could make installation difficult.  I guess I'm just used to things stripping out over time... and the traditional bolt-sprocket-to-crank-arm just seems more dependable.  ??

but still, no complaints so far.

Re: Spline Drive

I think the proper term is no boss cranks / spline drive sprockets
Why not go for it. One less bolt to remember to tighten down.
The sprocket hole looks like the inside of your crank arm, aNd if you never striped out the crank what would make one think you'd strip out the sprocket haha

Oo man good idea,
Ok my profile cranks are ONLY RHD (on my sunday). One big problem I grind on my right.
So, can I take a spline drive sprocket and install it on my left side of the bike..?
Such a good idea. If yes, then, now ever crank CAN be LHD or RHD !!!

I'm a rider not a speller... Sorry if you dislike  but I try hard. So please take it easy.

Re: Spline Drive

I have a couple of these, and I have no issues at all. I'm not sure if they are the future or not, but I see nothing wrong with the design. I can't imagine stripping 48 splines.

I wanted it because I thought it was great engineering. They should fit tight, so taking them on and off isn't great, but I don't do that much.

But because they are 19MM 48 spline, they only work with certain crank sets. So I don't see the traditional way going anywhere soon.

Re: Spline Drive

also less chance of "wobble". No unevenness since there isn't one bolt holding things against the crank arm.

this is what I meant by better engagement.  you don't have a bolt that is too small for the hole sliding and deforming the sprocket.

it probably puts less torque on the drive arm too.  I see some cranks rip apart from the welds of the spline boss to the welds of the drive boss

Re: Spline Drive

good topic.  I have wanted a pair of the new ELF cranks for a while now.  Then i found out they no longer made boss cranks only spline drive.
I always thought the SD cranks would give a better chain alligment.

Re: Spline Drive

deffo an improvement in design. the crank arms stay on the same way so why not do the sprocket the same. another one of those things that should have been done long ago.
the pluses of lighter weight and its easier to get an exact chain alignment/crank arm clearance on some of those tricky frames.

i still dont run one yet, but thats only because im running a mds bashguard sprocket and they dont have spline drive.
my buddies that run em have had no problems, and by design i dont think anybody will.

i don't know what to call it.... but the black insert that is in the center, i assume that is some other stronger material than the aluminum sprocket.  maybe chromoly?

You think I could use spline drive sprocket on my Sunday's profiles that are only RHD and use a spline drive to make it LHD..?

Re: Spline Drive

With a spline drive you can run LHD or RHD it makes no difference at all.Usually your sprocket bolt is on the right side crank arm making it a RHD only but since your locked onto the spline instead of the boss itll run both ways.Im running splined on my Tribute and Im about to switch to LHD.

Sweet, so I can!
You dont have to run boss less cranks to run spline drive

The black insert is the same material that's used to make the 48 spline spindles.

For anyone thinking about using splinedrive sprockets,do not use them if you plan on or currently running a Ti spindle.

Two different types of material, one is harder than the other, when they come into contact under load, the softer one will wear out faster than the harder material piece.

There is a reason why the spline insert is the same hardness of the spindle, ever wonder why automotive drivetrain pieces are all the same rockwell hardness.

This bike looks like it has barely been ridden and the only time it is,it's ridden lightly for photo shoots.

So I understand why you don't have any issues with the Ti spindle splinedrive set up.
